Book Selections From the Edinburgh Review 1833 Vol 2 of 4

Download or read book Selections From the Edinburgh Review 1833 Vol 2 of 4 written by Maurice Cross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Edinburgh Review, 1833, Vol. 2 of 4: Comprising the Best Articles in That Journal, From Its Commencement to the Present Time; With a Preliminary Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes Warburton, we think, was the last of our great divines - the last, perhaps, of any profession - who united profound learning with great powers of understanding, and, long with vast and varied stores of acquired knowledge, possessed energy of mind enough to wield them with ease and activity. The days of the Cudworths and Barrows - the Hookers and Taylors, are gone by. Among the other divisions of intellectual labour to which the progress of society has given birth, the business of reasoning, and the business of collecting knowledge, have been, in a great measure, put into separate hands. Our scholars are now little else than pedants, and antiquaries, and grammarians, - who have never exercised any faculty but memory; and our reasoners are, for the most part, but slenderly provided with learning; or, at any rate, make but a slender use of it in their reasoning. Of the two, the reasoners are by far the best off; and, upon many subjects, have really profited by the separation. Argument from authority is, in general, the weakest and the most tedious of all arguments; and learning, we are inclined to believe, has more frequently played the part of a bully than of a fair auxiliary; and been oftener used to frighten people than to convince them, - to dazzle and overawe, rather than to guide and enlighten. A modern writer would not, if he could, reason as Barrow and Cudworth often reason; and every reader, even of Warburton, must have felt that his learning often encumbers rather than assists his progress, and, like shining armour, adds more to his terrors than to his strength. The true theory of this separation may be, therefore, that scholars who are capable of reasoning, have ceased to make a parade of their scholarship; while those who have nothing else, must continue to set it forward - just as gentlemen now-a-days keep their gold in their pockets, instead of wearing it on their clothes - while the fashion of laced suits still prevails among their domestics. There are individuals, however, who think that a man of rank looks most dignified in cut velvet and embroidery; and that one who is not a gentleman can now counterfeit that appearance a little too easily. We do not presume to settle so weighty a dispute; - we only take the liberty of observing, that Warburton lived to see the fashion go out; and was almost the last native gentleman who appeared in a full trimmed coat. He was not only the last of our reasoning scholars, but the last also, we think, of our powerful polemics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Edinburgh Review, 1833, Vol. 1 of 4: Comprising the Best Articles in That Journal, From Its Commencement to the Present Time; With a Preliminary Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes That a judicious selection from a work of so voluminous a nature, and embracing so great a diversity of subjects, could not be made without considerable labour, may be easily conceived. The Editor was oppressed by the abundance of materials; and the difficulty of selection was increased by the general excellence of the articles among which he had to choose. He excluded from his plan those which referred to temporary topics; but, even after this was done, he was frequently at a loss what to insert, and what to leave out. His object was to embody in these Selections the best papers in the Review, particularly those of.permanent interest, or likely to attract the greatest number of readers. Whether he has succeeded the public will decide. Those best acquainted with the diversified contents of the original work, will probably be the least disposed to censure his defects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Edinburgh Review, 1833, Vol. 4 of 4: Comprising the Best Articles in That Journal, From Its Commencement to the Present Time; With a Preliminary Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes Man, after all, has but a Soul and a Body; - and we can only make him happy by ministering to the wants of the one or the other. These wants, and the enjoyments which result from supplying them, differ, no doubt, both in degree and in dignity, according as they refer to the spiritual or animal part of our complex nature - though, in its happiest state, both are capable of being very harmoniously blended. Those that belong to the mind are the highest certainly, and the best - but their importance is not so early or so universally felt: - the pursuit of them forms scarcely any part of the occupation of rude nations; and, even in the most civilized, they are but little valued or understood by the great body of the people. To this class, besides the hopes of Religion and the testimony of approving conscience, which may subsist in minds not very highly cultivated, belong the gratifications arising from the exercise of Intellect, Imagination, and Taste, together with the enjoyments that spring from the benevolent Affections, and those higher sympathies of our nature, which give rise to the love of Country or of Fame, and all those exalting tendencies which Lord Bacon has emphatically termed Heroic desires. The lower wants and gratifications, again, to which the toils and wishes of the great bulk of mankind are nearly confined, have for their object little more than what may be comprised under the familiar but comprehensive name of the Necessaries, the Comforts, and the Luxuries of their daily existence -' meat, clothes, and fire;' in their simplest, or their most exquisite forms - and the leisure and security and importance that belong to the possession of Property. Political Economy, in the exercise of its primary and direct functions, aims only at the multiplication of these last and lower gratifications. It is the science of Wealth, Trade, and Population: - and its end and object is, to show how Industry maybe employed to the best advantage - or how, with the least labour and the least waste of materials, the greatest quantity of comfort and enjoyment may be created for the use of man. If there be any certainty in such a science as this, and if it can really reveal and establish to its disciples any truths that are not already known to all thinking men, it is needless to say, that in practical value and importance it must far transcend any thing to which the name of science has hitherto been given among men.
