Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gower Selections From the Confessio Amantis In the present editor's complete edition of the Confessio Amantis some modifications have been admitted for the convenience of modern readers, but in the present text the student will find some five or six thousand lines of this very excellent manuscript exactly reproduced, and the editor hopes that this may be regarded as a matter of some general interest. The text of this book, it may be added, is the result of a quite independent collation of the manuscript, and a few very trifling errors (chiefly cases of 'y' for 'i'), which had escaped notice in the larger edition, have been discovered and corrected here. In the Introduction some account is given of the author and of his literary work, and a short summary of the Confessio Amantis is added. The account of the language and metre is founded upon that which is given in the larger edition, but with much abridgement. The Notes of this book, on the other hand, are considerably more extensive than those of the complete edition, being intended for younger students. The Glossary, it is hoped, will supply all that is necessary in addition for the full understanding of the text. The date of his birth is unknown, and within seventy years of his death his descent and the place of his birth seem to have been entirely forgotten. Caxton, who in 1483 printed the first edition of the Consessio Amantis, styles him, Johan Gower squyer borne in Walys in the tyme of kyng ricbard the second; Gower being the name of a family of some repute, resident in a district of South Wales called Gowerland, which occurs occasionally in the public records of the poet's day; but beyond Caxton's assertion, no proof that he was a native of the principality is known to exist. The first way of its wider diffusion was by recitation of the story-tellers. It was their business to give pleasures of imagination to the people through their ears, when even the few who could read would also listen with enjoyment to a tale recited with dramatic energy. When the play of "Pericles" brought one of Gower's tales upon our stage in Shakespeare's time, John Gower himself was supposed to speak its Prologue in his chosen measure of eight-syllabled verse. His words then recalled to mind the old way of reciting as well as reading. The actor who, dressed as Gower, came before the people, said to them: - "To sing a song that old was sung, From ashes ancient Gower is come; Assuming man's infirmities To glad your ear and please your eyes. It hath been sung at festivals, On ember eves and holy ales; And lords and ladies in their lives Have read it for restoratives." To all of us Gower may now go on to repeat other lines of the same Prologue: - "If you, born in these latter times, When wit's more ripe, accept my rhymes; And that to hear an old man sing May to your wishes pleasure bring, I life would wish, and that I might Waste it for you, like taper light."
