Unlike the rest of them he had no advantage either in birth or education; but though his opportunities were slight and his allotted span of life short, by force of genius in four brief years he had triumphed over all obstacles, and wrung from the world the acknowledgement of his right to a place among the great poets - not only of his own, but of any country - and had extorted even from Byron the admission that Hyperion was 'as sublime as Aeschylus'. Keats's first reviews were unfortunate; for though Jeffrey in the Edinburgh restored the credit of the critic's craft by an article which was a real criticism, and touched at once the weak spots in the poem, Endymion was maliciously handled in the Quarterly and Blackwood. The fact is that besides being blinded by bigotry, the writers of these reviews did not understand that the poem was not only a new handling of an old myth but also an allegory. The poem is not completely successful, although it contains, with certain weaknesses and lapses, passages of extraordinary beauty. That Endymion did not satisfy its author we know, but in spite of all imperfections it demands and deserves as close a study as any other part of his poetry. Hyperion remains a fragment. Keats felt that in leaving it unfinished he was escaping the bondage of Milton, and there is some truth in this, but hardly the whole truth, for we may fairly ask whether Keats was such a slavish imitator of Milton as he supposed he was, and as some of his critics have thought. Here are the poems, wrote Keats, in despatching to his brother in America some of his latest com positions, they will explain themselves - as all poetry should do, without any comment and though notes may sometimes add to our knowledge in such a way that we return to the text with a fuller appreciation and a wider power of sympathy, for once that they are consulted the poems will be read many times, and in moods - those moods, indeed, in which poetry makes its surest appeal - when all explanatory comments are a source of weariness and imitation. The notes are both textual and illus trative. The record of textual variations makes no pretence at being exhaustive for a complete account of the different forms through which the poems passed before Keats left them Mr. Forman's edition will always remain the exact and unim peachable authority, and it would. Have been wholly unnecessary, even if the material at my disposal had made it possible, for me to attempt again what has already been so admirably done. I have been content, therefore, with recording those variants which are especially interesting in the light they throw upon the poet's powers of self-criticism, and upon the gradual. Growth, as it were, of a work of art to the form in which the artist thought fit to give it to the world. However, the first version of the. Ode to a Nightingak, which has come to light since the publication of Mr. Forman's edition, is given in every detail. But the main object of the. Notes, introduction, and ap pendices is to discuss and illustrate the relation of Keats with his predecessors, and to establish the sources of his inspiration. The subject is one of special interest and special importance to a study of Keats, and much has from time to time been written incidentally upon it; but it has never, I think, been treated systematically in all its bearings upon the spirit of his work and upon its subject matter, style, and vocabulary. Yet such a study; as -it' seems to me, affords one of the surest methods by which we may come to understand that essential element of original P genius by virtue of which Keats is among the very greatest of our poets.
