This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson The rising generation is, it may be feared, better acquainted with Macaulay's travesty of Boswell and of Johnson than with the great originals which he so flagrantly traduced. Boswell's book is very long (it contains more than half a million words); large parts of it assume familiarity with Latin; and the beginning of the book is much less attractive than the rest. The present editor, who attacked it at a tender age, was deterred partly by the perplexing mass of Croker's notes, partly also by the long quotations and lists of conjectural attributions; and after wandering for a space in those crepuscular regions, forsook the journey before the sun was up. If any apology is required for making a selection from a work in its nature discontinuous, the authority may be cited of Johnson himself; who was at first angry with Bishop Hurd for publishing a mutilated Cowley, but afterwards relenting allowed that 'there is no impropriety in a man's publishing as much as he chooses of any authour, if he does not put the rest out of the way'. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Boswell's Life of Johnson Samuel johnson has the almost unique distinction of being an author who is better known than his works. He is admittedly the dominant figure in later eighteenth century English literature. Professor Barrett Wendell speaks of him and Ben Jonson as two men who have pre eminently guided the course of letters, each in his own age. Taine speaks of him as a strange character the most esteemed of his time, a sort of literary dictator, and adds that his criticism becomes law; men crowd to hear him talk; he is the arbiter of style. Yet Rasselas, the Vanity of Human Wishes and even the Lives of the Poets are likely to remain unopened, while the works of his certainly lesser contemporary, Goldsmith, who looked up to John son as a patron and protector, are widely read. The rea son for this neglect may be found again in Taine, who says of his style: Classical prose attains its perfection in him as classical poetry in Pope. Art cannot be more con summate or nature more forced and of his matter: His truths are too true; we already knew his precepts by heart. Indeed, both substance and style are out of date. It is not necessary, then, for the pupil to read much of the works of Johnson a chapter or two of Rasselas and a typical passage from the Lives of the Poets, on Addison, for instance are quite sufficient to show the philosophy, the critical judgment, and the style of Johnson as a writer. Book excerpt: In making this abridgement of Boswell's Life of Johnson I have omitted most of Boswell's criticisms, comments, and notes, all of Johnson's opinions in legal cases, most of the letters, and parts of the conversation dealing with matters which were of greater importance in Boswell's day than now. I have kept in mind an old habit, common enough, I dare say, among its devotees, of opening the book of random, and reading wherever the eye falls upon a passage of especial interest. All such passages, I hope, have been retained, and enough of the whole book to illustrate all the phases of Johnson's mind and of his time which Boswell observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. 1: 1709-March 18, 1776 Anecdotes of Johnson, both in 1785, the year following Johnson's death, and Sir John Hawkins's Life of Johnson, in 1787. Johnson, who was aware of Boswell's intention to write his life, had read the ms. Of the Journal of a Tour in the Hebrides, and had expressed himself as satisfied with Boswell as a chronicler. Boswell was not sparing in expressing his contempt for Mrs. Piozzi's lively book, and Sir John's heavy, but not unreadable biography. His scorn for these two far from worthless, but somewhat inaccurate, works, was no doubt due to jealousy of long standing. The high regard that Johnson had for Mrs. Thrale, and the compliment that he paid to his Old friend Hawkins in asking him to become his literary executor must have exasperated if not provoked his jealousy. Boswell anticipated a great success for his book, and wisely protected his interests by entering at Stationers' Hall as distinct publications, Johnson's famous letter to Lord Chesterfield, and his conversation with George III, thus placing these passages beyond the reach of the book-making pirates of the day. Boswell's hopes were entirely realized - the Life was completely successful from the first, but its author raised a veritable hornet's nest by the freedom with which he dealt with persons still living. Its publication was signalized by the appearance of a host Of lampoons, satirical verses and caricatures: Peter Pindar, a Grub Street satirist, joined forces with Rowlandson in an amusing brochure entitled Bozzy and Piozzi. The book, however, was still in a process of crystallization: to the original two volumes quarto published in 1791 a supplementary volume was added in 1794, followed almost immediately by a second edition in three volumes octavo, but in this edition the new material was badly arranged. Boswell was preparing a third edition when he died. Edmund Malone, the author's friend and literary adviser, who had revised the Tour in the Hebrides and the first edition of the Life, then took up the work, and following Boswell's plan published in 1799 a new (and third) edition in four octavo volumes. This edition was a vast improvement on the preceding ones, as it was revised and contained a number of new notes and some additional letters. In the fourth edition, issued in 1804, the book may be said to have practically assumed the form in which it is now known. Two more editions were issued by Malone, namely, the fifth, published in 1807, just a century ago, from which the present reprint has been made, and the Sixth, revised by the author's son, James Boswell, Jun., published in 1811, a year before Malone's death.
