Book excerpt: The most important writings by the great and controversial Victorian polemicist. Carlyle was one of the great figures of his age: thunderous, passionate, irascible, sceptical and idealistic. This selection is representative of all stages of Carlyle's career, and includes 'Sign of the Times', his essay against the mechanization of the age and the rise of the machines; the whole of 'Chartism'; and extracts from The French Revolution, Heroes and Hero-Worship, Sartor Resartus, Past and Present, as well as other pieces. The book also includes an introduction and notes by Alan Shelston. Thomas Carlyle was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1795. Intended by his family to become a Presbyterian minister, he was influenced by the Scottish Enlightenment while at the University of Edinburgh and became a teacher instead. He later turned to literary work, publishing a life of Schiller and translations of Goethe in the 1820s. His first truly successful book was The French Revolution, which was followed by many others. He died in 1881. Alan Shelston was Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Manchester until retirement in 2002. He has edited a number of Gaskell's works including The Life of Charlotte Bronte (1975) and North and South (2005), and was joint editor with John Chapple of The Further Letters of Mrs Gaskell (2000). He has published a selection of Hardy's poetry and written on a number of nineteen century authors including Dickens and Henry James.

These specially commissioned contributions explore the many ways in which skilled listening can mediate new relationships with our physical environment and the people and other species that we share it with. From the Introduction: Listening has become an increasingly popular subject of study. It features in conferences, in academic journals, in doctoral research projects. However, reflexive listening is an applied practice that exceeds the boundaries of academic institutions to take its place in a number of everyday settings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings From Carlyle: Selected and Edited With Introduction and Notes Tm; present attempt to render Carlyle accessible to schools seems naturally to require some few words of introduction. It has not been thought desirable to reduce the great writer by any method of simplification to the capacity of the lowest, as, by so doing, he would inevitably disappear. His manner and matter are inseparable. Nor, indeed, was it necessary; for Carlyle h the faculty of making his meaning plain, though the. Staple of his thinking may at first be above the capacity of that class of readers for whom this work is intended. Boys, however, will be benefited by attempting the great books resolutely and directly, rather than by any mistaken and laborious policy of approaching them through Introductions and Primers. Stuart Rowland, the brooding Marquess of Mercer, has been part of Zoë's extended family since she was a child. As dark and cynical as Zoë is lively, Mercer has always known they would be the worst possible match...until his scapegrace brother Robert does the unthinkable, and winds up betrothed to Zoë. Now, secluded on Mercer's vast estate to escape a looming scandal and the ton's prying eyes, Zoë and Mercer may find that a dark obsession has become a tempestuous passion that can no longer be denied...

Book Selections From Carlyle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From Carlyle Classic Reprint written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Carlyle The present volume, it is believed, includes Within its narrow limits material adequate for the elementary study of Carlyle in his earliest and most fruitful period. The notes are planned in the main to give aid rather than information or 0pinion. By the frequent quotation of supplementary or illustrative passages Wherever it was practicable, the plan has been to let the author annotate himself. Occasionally it has seemed natural to call atten tion to some characteristic mode of thought or of expres sion, but in neither case has a set analysis been attempted. The editor's suggestions to the teacher Who may use this book are three: First, that some sort of insight into the character of the man Carlyle is essential, not only as a commentary upon, but as an introduction to, the study of his work. Second, that a good deal of additional matter should be read aloud to the class, with a view to familiarizing them With peculiarities of manner Which are obstacles only to the unaccustomed ear. And third, that all systematic discussion of style be reserved until the student has had a chance to form an Opinion of his own, and is ready to take a part in the discussion. Book Carlyle s House and Other Sketches

Download or read book Carlyle s House and Other Sketches written by Virginia Woolf and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlyle’s House and Other Sketches marks the first publication of one of Virginia Woolf’s very earliest notebooks. Recently unearthed from a collection of private papers, it contains a series of six striking and semi–autobiographical sketches, each transcribed and edited by Dr. David Bradshaw. From the cold formality of London town–houses with their rows of austere portraits, to the dull chaos of the academic’s abode, and the eccentric spinster’s Hampstead home, Virginia Woolf paints a series of portraits of everyday life, capturing character and setting in exquisite detail. Experimental in style, and heralding the later masterpieces Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, this early notebook is quintessential Woolf.
