Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes a workshop held to assist in the selection of species to be used as legal indicators of sustainability under the Ontario Crown Forest Sustainability Act and its regulated Forest Management Planning Manual, and to recommend a suite of species whose populations can be monitored to provide an indication of broad forest condition. The workshop included working groups formed to select appropriate species from the following groups: Great Lakes/St. Lawrence birds, boreal birds, and amphibians, reptiles, and mammals together). Tables are presented representing results of group deliberations concerning the most indicative habitat and age class for each species, and final recommendations for indicators based on both discussions at the workshop and subsequent comments.

Book Indicator Plant Species in Canadian Forests

Download or read book Indicator Plant Species in Canadian Forests written by Gordon S. Ringius and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant species that convey information about the ecological nature of a site are known as indicator species. A wide variety of site conditions including soil nutrient and moisture regimes, forest humus types, soil reaction, and general soil type can be determined from the presence of plant species. This field guide is an introduction to the concept of plants as indicators of environmental conditions within Canada's forests. It provides information on the identification, ecology, geographic range, and indicator value of 80 selected vascular plants, mosses, and lichens. Indicator Plant Species in Canadian Forests will be of interest to resource planners, foresters, ecologists, botanists, naturalists, and anyone who wishes to know more about forest plants and what they tell us about the sites they occupy.

Book Selected Wildlife and Habitat Features Inventory Manual for Use in Forest Management Planning

Bruce and published by Peterborough : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guidelines presented in this publication have been prepared to assist resource managers in the standardized inventory of habitat, and in some cases, populations of selected species of wildlife that potentially occur within the Crown forests of Ontario. The first section describes generalized methods and techniques, including information on personnel and training, planning of field surveys, wildlife habitat inventory and geographic information system technology, and recording the location of observations. The second and main section presents methodologies to identify and delineate featured species habitats. Chapters in this section provide methodologies regarding: moose aquatic feeding areas, bald eagle and osprey nests, and great blue heron colonies; moose winter habitat; white-tailed deer winter habitat; provincially featured birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants; woodland caribou winter habitat, calving and nursery sites; nests of red-shouldered hawk and great gray owl; southern flying squirrel habitats; West Virginia white butterfly habitats; and other vulnerable birds, mammals, and reptiles that can be locally featured.

Book Effective Ecological Monitoring

Download or read book Effective Ecological Monitoring written by David B Lindenmayer and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term monitoring programs are fundamental to understanding the natural environment and effectively tackling major environmental problems. Yet they are often done very poorly and ineffectively. Effective Ecological Monitoring describes what makes successful and unsuccessful long-term monitoring programs. Short and to the point, it illustrates key aspects with case studies and examples. It is based on the collective experience of running long-term research and monitoring programs of the two authors – experience which spans more than 70 years. The book first outlines why long-term monitoring is important, then discusses why long-term monitoring programs often fail. The authors then highlight what makes good and effective monitoring. These good and bad aspects of long-term monitoring programs are further illustrated in the fourth chapter of the book. The final chapter sums up the future of long-term monitoring programs and how to make them better, more effective and better targeted.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.
