Book excerpt: "Access to good quality, affordable, and appropriate health products is indispensable to advance universal health coverage, address health emergencies, and promote healthier populations–the three strategic priorities of the World Health Organization (WHO)Thirteenth General Programme of Work 2019–2023.1Without access to In vitrodiagnostics (IVDs),health providers cannot diagnose patients effectively and promptly or provide appropriate treatments. In March 2017, the WHO Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines recommended the development of a Model List of Essential In Vitro Diagnostics (EDL), to complement the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines (EML). To support the EDL and to advise on other in vitro diagnostic initiatives, WHO created a Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on In VitroDiagnostics (SAGE-IVD). The SAGE-IVD, which includes 19 multidisciplinary members with global representation, held its first meeting from 16–20April 2018 at WHO headquarters, Geneva. The SAGE IVD made recommendations for the content, format and implementation of the first edition of the EDL.It is foreseen that EDL will be an important tool in increasing access to appropriate, affordable and quality-assured IVDs, particularly where they are most needed to address health priorities"--Executive summary.

Book Health system performance assessment

Download or read book Health system performance assessment written by Irene PAPANICOLAS and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring a robust and resilient health system involves policy actions which need to be implemented based on the best available evidence. This requires health systems to be monitored regularly to build on their strengths and to overcome any apparent shortcomings. In order to assist in that process, this volume, a collaboration between the World Health Organization and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, presents a new framework to support monitoring of health system performance, with a focus on detailed conceptual links between health system functions and overall system goals. This HSPA framework for Universal Health Coverage thus represents a comprehensive attempt to address fundamental questions regarding regular assessment of health systems, including health system boundaries, component elements and outcomes. In this book, each of the health system function chapters outlines the purpose of the function, the sub-functions that enable it to carry out the key activities necessary to fulfil its purpose, as well as the assessment areas and proposed indicative measures to evaluate how well a system performs. The framework will thus assist policy-makers in understanding possible origins or impact of poor performance on a particular health system outcome, triggering more in-depth analysis.

Book WHO implementation handbook for national action plans on antimicrobial resistance

Download or read book WHO implementation handbook for national action plans on antimicrobial resistance written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015 the World Health Assembly endorsed the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance calling on countries to develop and implement national action plans on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). For most countries, the greatest challenge is not developing a national action plan; rather, it is the implementation of the plan based on evidence-based prioritization of activities, systematic monitoring of progress, and ensuring sustainability of efforts. The purpose of this publication is to to provide a practical, stepwise approach to the implementation of the national action plan on AMR within the human health sector; and to provide a process and collation of existing WHO tools to prioritize, cost, implement, monitor and evaluate national action plan activities. The target audience of the publication are national/subnational stakeholders working on AMR within the human health sector. This includes national health authorities, national multisectoral coordination groups, senior technical experts and policymakers involved in implementing AMR activities at all levels of the health system, and implementation partners to accelerate sustainable implementation and monitoring and evaluation of national action plans on AMR.

It provides justification for action, posits priority interventions and proposes a monitoring framework. Key components needed to establish, scale up and sustain a well-functioning national childhood cancer programme are explained. The scope of this framework document is centrally defined by the programmes, services and policies that support children with cancer in the context of the health system. For the Initiative, children are defined as those aged 19 years or younger. Childhood cancer care requires cross-cutting strategies, such as workforce training, that often have overlap with broader child health and/or cancer control programmes. These synergies are highlighted and considered in scope for the Initiative and for an integrated response in childhood cancer control. The primary audience for this framework document are policy-makers, cancer control programme managers and hospital managers at the country level. Additional key stakeholders may also find the information in this guide beneficial, including clinicians, parent groups, civil society, academia and interested parties in the private sector. Download or read book Global breast cancer initiative implementation framework written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer deaths among women, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. The Global Breast Cancer Initiative strives to reduce breast cancer mortality by 2.5 percent per year, which over a 20-year period can save 2.5 million lives. The purpose of this core technical package is to outline a pathway for incremental, sustainable improvements tailored to country-specific needs based on three key strategies and objectives: health promotion and early detection; timely diagnosis; and comprehensive breast cancer management. This document provides a common framework linking policy makers, stakeholders, the clinical community, program managers and civil society to evidence-based systematic approaches that can facilitate health systems strengthening and reduce inequities in women’s health throughout their life cycles.
