Book Selecting an Optimal Construction Alternative Through Informed Decision making highway Bridges

Download or read book Selecting an Optimal Construction Alternative Through Informed Decision making highway Bridges written by Abdul W. Mohammed and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision making is a cognitive process which includes attention, remembering, understanding, and solving. In every industry decisions are required at every step along the way. Available information should be analyzed or if information is not available it should be gathered first to come up with a decision. A predefined decision-making process helps in making informed decisions along with maintaining consistency in the decision made. Contiguous parameters to a specific application are required along with an ideal mathematical model for informed decision-making. A potential management which requires an optimal decision-making is bridge construction industry due to the fact that, the bridges not only connect communities making commute shorter and faster but also shape our lives through urban development. The need for bridge rehabilitation/replacement engenders bottlenecks and closures on existing freeways which creates outrageous conditions for travelling public. Thus, the demand of travelling public for deploying bridge rehabilitation/ replacement process using innovative construction processes evolved in Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). Various state departments of transportation have developed decision-making models to identify if ABC is a viable option for a site, yet the deficiencies pertaining in those models require contemplation. The herein study identifies the bridge construction contiguous parameters and models to precisely address the deficiencies in the existing decision-making models for bridges. The outcome of this study is an informed decision-making model that can be customized using site specific data in selecting an optimal bridge construction process. A decision-making tool is developed for implementation of the decision-making model. The tool os demonstrated through a case study of Parkview Bridge over US 131 in Kalamazoo, MI.

Book Improving Bridges with Prefabricated Precast Concrete Systems

Download or read book Improving Bridges with Prefabricated Precast Concrete Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to minimize the impact of construction on the traveling public, MDOT utilizes innovative and specialized construction methods such as Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). Michigan, like other highway agencies in the region, has several challenges in specifying prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) and accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques for bridge replacement projects. Among those challenges, the following are the most common: (1) justification of initial project costs, (2) defining a rational process for selecting ABC over conventional construction, (3) absence of PBES selection guidelines and proven standard and successful designs, (4) absence of constructability evaluation guidelines, and (5) uncertain durability performance of PBES and connections. This research project was initiated with several objectives. They were achieved by (1) synthesizing the state-of-the-art practices, challenges, and lessons learned from the implemented ABC projects, (2) developing a Michigan-specific decision-making platform based on the site specific data to identify the optimal construction alternative between conventional construction and ABC, (3) developing a comprehensive list of connection details and cementitious materials for connections, (4) developing standard deck level longitudinal connection details for typical highway bridges, (5) developing a template of special provisions for grout selection and application procedures, (6) documenting construction procedures, equipment, and implementation limitations, (7) developing a constructability review checklist, and (6) providing recommendations for further research and implementation of PBES based on constructability, maintainability, repairability, and durability.

Book Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment For Multi Criteria Decision Making In Bridge Design A Review

Download or read book Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment For Multi Criteria Decision Making In Bridge Design A Review written by Ignacio Javier Navarro and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable design of infrastructures has become a major matter of study since the recent establishment of the Agenda 2030. This paper provides a systematic literature review on the use of multi-criteria decision making techniques used so far for the sustainable design of bridges. Special attention is put as well on how the reviewed studies assess the sustainable performance of bridge designs along their life cycle from the economic, the environmental and the social perspective. Although SAW and AHP are recurrently used in the sustainable assessment of bridges, the analysis of the most recent articles show that the application of TOPSIS and PROMETHEE techniques are gaining increasing relevance for such purpose. Most of the studies focus on the research of the construction and the maintenance stage of bridges. However, a need for further analysis is identified when it comes to the assessment of the impacts resulting from the End of Life cycle stage of bridges from a sustainable point of view. The use of intuitionistic and neutrosophic logic have been detected as emerging alternatives to the fuzzy approach of decision making problems.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Multi Objective and Multi Attribute Optimisation for Sustainable Development Decision Aiding

Download or read book Multi Objective and Multi Attribute Optimisation for Sustainable Development Decision Aiding written by Samarjit Kar and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization is considered as a decision-making process for getting the most out of available resources for the best attainable results. Many real-world problems are multi-objective or multi-attribute problems that naturally involve several competing objectives that need to be optimized simultaneously, while respecting some constraints or involving selection among feasible discrete alternatives. In this Reprint of the Special Issue, 19 research papers co-authored by 88 researchers from 14 different countries explore aspects of multi-objective or multi-attribute modeling and optimization in crisp or uncertain environments by suggesting multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) and multi-objective decision-making (MODM) approaches. The papers elaborate upon the approaches of state-of-the-art case studies in selected areas of applications related to sustainable development decision aiding in engineering and management, including construction, transportation, infrastructure development, production, and organization management.

Book Guidebook on Alternative Quality Management Systems for Highway Construction

Download or read book Guidebook on Alternative Quality Management Systems for Highway Construction written by Keith Robert Molenaar and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 808: Guidebook on Alternative Quality Management Systems for Highway Construction provides national guidance on standard approaches relating to quality management systems (QMSs). The basis for the report stems from a lack of guidance that resulted in significant investment on the part of transportation agencies, contractors, and consultants to develop unique QMSs for different agencies on a project-by-project basis. The speed at which rapid renewal projects must be delivered creates a demand for a well-defined QMS that can be successfully replicated on a variety of projects. The report will guide readers through the process of developing a QMS that is both responsive to specific project needs and broad enough to be replicated with project-specific adaptations on future projects of similar scope, complexity, and delivery schedule. The project quality assurance organization (QAO) selection forms presented in the report are available online." -- Publisher's description.
