Book excerpt: John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a preeminent British neurologist who is widely recognized today as one of the leading founders of modern clinical neurology and neuroscience. He had a unique ability to translate messy clinical data into viable neuroscientific conceptions. This ability served him well, because in his early years knowledge of cerebral organization was quite rudimentary. Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) faced the same problem at the same time in the 1860s, and each man recognized the other's work at a fundamental level. Although Jackson's historical standing has increased over the century since his death, there is only one full-length biography, the Critchleys' John Hughlings Jackson: Father of English Neurology (OUP 1998). Like the numerous articles and chapters that have been written about Jackson, that book is sometimes inaccurate and often hagiographic. In this new biography, John Hughlings Jackson: Clinical Neurology, Evolution and Victorian Brain Science, Samuel H. Greenblatt provides a critical analysis of Jackson's work within the professional, social, and intellectual contexts of his Victorian milieu. The book follows Jackson's intellectual development through a close examination of his published writings, in chronological order, from the case reports and Suggestions of his early medical career to the major lectures he delivered in his later years. What are their perceptibilities? Deleuze uses the word ‘visibilities’ to indicate that visual perception isn’t just a physiological given but cues operations productive of new assemblages. Perceptibilities are, by analogy, spatio-temporal, geolocative, kinaesthetic, audio-visual, and haptic operations that are always already memory. In the case of strong inscriptions, they are also epigenetic events. In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system to vibrate with increasing amplitudes at certain frequencies of excitation. In cybernetics and in theories of technology, it refers to systems’ feedback. In Native science, resonance denotes the axiology of positions and events. It’s a form of multi-species perception that emphasises emergent directionality and protean mnemonics. This transdisciplinary volume brings together key theorists and practitioners from media theory, Native science, bio-media and sound art, philosophy, art his- tory, and design informatics to examine: a) the becoming-technique of animal– human–machinic perceptibilities; and b) micro-perceptions that lie beneath the threshold of known perceptions yet create energetic vibrations. Yet, as clinicians or basic researchers, we are conscious of potential evolutionary roots of neurological and psychiatric symptoms, often offering a rudimentary explanation but never delving deeply into the current role of evolutionary science as it relates to health and disease. We may miss appreciation of the role of adaptive properties, evolutionarily based neuronal circuitries, unbalanced cellular energy demands, and the potential health consequences of residual syndromic behaviors that were possibly useful in early times of human development, but presently are obsolete and pathological. The problem is amplified, because there is often no interdisciplinary dialogue between anthropology and evolutionary biology on one side and clinical sciences on the other side. However, the evolutionary tracing back of disease pathways may disclose unexpected insights and trigger the design of innovative research as well as propel the development of new therapeutic interventions. There could also be a better apprehension of compensatory behaviors, both at the cellular level as well as the systemic the behavioural levels, that could be the expected fruits of such collaborations. So far scientists fall short in modeling the complexity of human (social) life, human language, or manual dexterity, and mental or emotional behaviors that typify human neurological or psychological function and dysfunction. Finally, there remain obstacles in the form of poor animal modeling for human brain diseases and for human longevity. The present book aims to fill these gaps by presenting an evolutionary view of neurological and psychiatric conditions that is meant to complement and enrich existing medical perspectives"--
