Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century contains over 400 entries that treat a broad range of individual poets and poems, along with many articles devoted to topics, schools, or periods of American verse in the century. Entries fall into three main categories: poet entries, which provide biographical and cultural contexts for the author's career; entries on individual works, which offer closer explication of the most resonant poems in the 20th-century canon; and topical entries, which offer analyses of a given period of literary production, school, thematically constructed category, or other verse tradition that historically has been in dialogue with the poetry of the United States.

Book Selected Poems and Translations

Download or read book Selected Poems and Translations written by Ezra Pound and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition replaces Ezra Pound's Selected Poems 1908-1969, and offers a revaluation of the poetry by conjoining early and late works within a new overview. Emphasis has also been laid on the interpenetration of original composition and translation within Pound's career, and the edition includes the complete 'Homage to Sextus Propertius' in its original lineation, Pound's early translations from Cavalcanti and the troubadours, and his late translations of the Confucian Odes, Horace and Sophocles. Unlike all previous selections from Pound's poetry, this edition provides annotation for all the early poems as well as a commentary on the later Cantos-indispensable to any reader wanting to follow Pound in his epic odyssey through ancient China, medieval Provence, the Italian Renaissance, the early years of the American Republic, and the darkness of the twentieth century.

Book Articulate Flesh

  • Author : Gregory Woods
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1987-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300047523
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Articulate Flesh written by Gregory Woods and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that homosexual poetry is part of the mainstream of poetic writing--not a distinct and differentiated category within it--Gregory Woods provides a fastidious study of homosexual poetry in the twentieth century that emphasizes the homo-erotic themes in the works of D.H. Lawrence, Hart Crane, W.H. Auden, Allen Ginsberg, and Thom Gunn. Woods's controlled and elegant study demonstrates that a critic who ignores the sexual orientation of a poet, particularly a love poet, risks overlooking the significance of the poetry itself.

Book Edward Thomas Prose Writings a Selected Edition

Download or read book Edward Thomas Prose Writings a Selected Edition written by Edward Thomas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Thomas can be seen as the most important poetry critic in the early twentieth century. Thomas was a prose-writer before he was a poet. The Selected Edition of his prose, and especially this volume, shows that he was also a critic before he was a poet. His unusual literary career opens up key questions about the relation between poetry and criticism, as well as between poetry and prose. Thomas wrote books about poetry, but his criticism mainly took the form of reviews. He reviewed collections, editions, and studies of poetry, most regularly, for the Daily Chronicle and the Morning Post. These reviews amount to a unique commentary on the state of poetry and of poetry criticism after 1900. Since reviewing provided Thomas's main income, he also reviewed other kinds of book. Hence the sheer mass of his reviews, the stress he suffered as a literary journalist. Yet his criticism maintains an astonishingly high standard. Thomas's response to contemporary poetry intersects with his readings of older poetry. No critic or poet of the time was so deeply acquainted with the traditions of English-language poetry or so alert to new poetic movements in Ireland and America. Edward Thomas's writings on poetry have a double importance. Besides suggesting the hidden evolution of his own aesthetic, they constitute a lost history and critique of poetry before the Great War. They change our assumptions about that period. Thomas's perspectives on poets such as Yeats, Hardy, Frost, Lawrence, and Pound illuminate the making of modern poetry.
