Book The Selected Papers of Jane Addams

Download or read book The Selected Papers of Jane Addams written by Jane Addams and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1889 an unknown but determined Jane Addams arrived in the immigrant-burdened, politically corrupt, and environmentally challenged Chicago with a vision for achieving a more secure, satisfying, and hopeful life for all. Eleven years later, her “scheme,” as she called it, had become Hull-House and stood as the template for the creation of the American settlement house movement while Addams’s writings and speeches attracted a growing audience to her ideas and work. The third volume in this acclaimed series documents Addams’s creation of Hull-House and her rise to worldwide fame as the acknowledged female leader of progressive reform. It also provides evidence of her growing commitment to pacifism. Here we see Addams, a force of thought, action, and commitment, forming lasting relationships with her Hull-House neighbors and the Chicago community of civic, political, and social leaders, even as she matured as an organizer, leader, and fund-raiser, and as a sought-after speaker, and writer. The papers reveal her positions on reform challenges while illuminating her strategies, successes, and responses to failures. At the same time, the collection brings to light Addams’s private life. Letters and other documents trace how many of her Hull-House and reform alliances evolved into deep, lasting friendships and also explore the challenges she faced as her role in her own family life became more complex. Fully annotated and packed with illustrations, The Selected Papers of Jane Addams, Volume 3 is a portrait of a woman as she changed—and as she changed history.

Book The Selected Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony

Download or read book The Selected Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony written by Ann D. Gordon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “hush” of the title comes suddenly, when first Elizabeth Cady Stanton dies on October 26, 1902, and three years later Susan B. Anthony dies on March 13, 1906. It is sudden because Stanton, despite near blindness and immobility, wrote so intently right to the end that editors had supplies of her articles on hand to publish several months after her death. It is sudden because Anthony, at the age of eighty-five, set off for one more transcontinental trip, telling a friend on the Pacific Coast, “it will be just as well if I come to the end on the cars, or anywhere, as to be at home.” Volume VI of this extraordinary series of selected papers is inescapably about endings, death, and silence. But death happens here to women still in the fight. An Awful Hush is about reformers trained “in the school of anti-slavery” trying to practice their craft in the age of Jim Crow and a new American Empire. It recounts new challenges to “an aristocracy of sex,” whether among the bishops of the Episcopal church, the voters of California, or the trustees of the University of Rochester. And it sends last messages about woman suffrage. As Stanton wrote to Theodore Roosevelt on the day before she died, “Surely there is no greater monopoly than that of all men, in denying to all women a voice in the laws they are compelled to obey.” With the publication of Volume VI, this series is now complete.

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: "This volume of selected papers of Jacob Wolfowitz is published to honor the 70th birthday of this leader of research in statistical inference and information theory...We have made an attempt to organize the material into sections based on subject matter. Since Wolfowitz's many interests have persisted over time, the sections do not represent chronological divisions...We have tried to choose the papers we regarded as most important among Wolfowitz's work in terms of their further influence, or sometimes a paper that contains what we found a striking idea of him. A further consideration was the lucidity of his explanations that we mentioned in describing his teaching; some of his papers contain intuition of heuristics that no statistician should miss..."

Book Interpreting Probability

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Howie
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-08-08
  • ISBN : 1139434373
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Interpreting Probability written by David Howie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term probability can be used in two main senses. In the frequency interpretation it is a limiting ratio in a sequence of repeatable events. In the Bayesian view, probability is a mental construct representing uncertainty. This 2002 book is about these two types of probability and investigates how, despite being adopted by scientists and statisticians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Bayesianism was discredited as a theory of scientific inference during the 1920s and 1930s. Through the examination of a dispute between two British scientists, the author argues that a choice between the two interpretations is not forced by pure logic or the mathematics of the situation, but depends on the experiences and aims of the individuals involved. The book should be of interest to students and scientists interested in statistics and probability theories and to general readers with an interest in the history, sociology and philosophy of science.

Book Quantum Mechanics In Phase Space An Overview With Selected Papers

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics In Phase Space An Overview With Selected Papers written by Thomas L Curtright and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence, quantum computing, and quantum chaos. It is also important in signal processing and the mathematics of algebraic deformation. A remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Groenewold and Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: it furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of quantum mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert space, or path integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides — coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase space, accommodating the uncertainty principle, and it offers unique insights into the classical limit of quantum theory. This invaluable book is a collection of the seminal papers on the formulation, with an introductory overview which provides a trail map for those papers; an extensive bibliography; and simple illustrations, suitable for applications to a broad range of physics problems. It can provide supplementary material for a beginning graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Book Selected Works of E L Lehmann

Download or read book Selected Works of E L Lehmann written by Javier Rojo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes present a selection of Erich L. Lehmann’s monumental contributions to Statistics. These works are multifaceted. His early work included fundamental contributions to hypothesis testing, theory of point estimation, and more generally to decision theory. His work in Nonparametric Statistics was groundbreaking. His fundamental contributions in this area include results that came to assuage the anxiety of statisticians that were skeptical of nonparametric methodologies, and his work on concepts of dependence has created a large literature. The two volumes are divided into chapters of related works. Invited contributors have critiqued the papers in each chapter, and the reprinted group of papers follows each commentary. A complete bibliography that contains links to recorded talks by Erich Lehmann – and which are freely accessible to the public – and a list of Ph.D. students are also included. These volumes belong in every statistician’s personal collection and are a required holding for any institutional library.
