Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Friedrich Nietzsche But there is another and still more serious legend which should be destroyed by this publication. It is Nietzsche's reputed responsibility for the World War. We all remember that he - together with some minor authors - was accused Of being. The poisoner of the modern German mind whose' former idealism and romanticism Nietzsche was said to have entirely perverted and led into unwholesome materialistic channels. Now it will be seen from these letters that there was no more outspoken critic of the German Empire and its crude and superficial Kultur than Friedrich Nietzsche. Throughout his whole life this lonely man fought against his Fatherland and for true enlightenment: for harmony between body and soul, between peoples and races, between authorities and subjects. It will be a revelation to many who are still under the influence. Of the singular misunderstandingcurrent runs throughout the whole of Nietzsche's cor respondence. At the height of Germany's victory in 1870 Nietzsche wrote from Bale (nov. 7, 1870) As regards the conditions of culture m the immediate future I feel the deepest misgivings. If only we are not forced to pay too dearly for th1s huge national success in a quarter where I at least refuse to suffer any loss. Between ourselves. I regard the Prussia of to-day as a power full of the greatest danger for culture. Nietzsche never wavered in his deep distrust and his fierce denial of Imperial Germany; when near the end Of his spiritual life we still find him writing from Nice under date of February 24, 1887. Book Conversations with Nietzsche

Download or read book Conversations with Nietzsche written by Sander L. Gilman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-20 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche's friend, the philosopher Paul Rée, once said that Nietzsche was more important for his letters than for his books, and even more important for his conversations than for his letters. In Conversations with Nietzsche, Sander Gilman and David Parent present a fascinating selection of eighty-seven memoirs, anecdotes, and informal recollections by friends and acquaintances of Nietzsche. Translated from the definitive German collection, Begegnungen mit Nietzsche, these biographical pieces--some of which have never before appeared in English--cover the entire span of Nietzsche's life: his boyhood friendships, his arrival at the University of Bonn, his appointment to professor at Basel at age twenty-four, the impact of The Birth of Tragedy, his friendship with Wagner, his life in Italy, his confinement at the Jena Sanatorium, and his death. They present the philosopher in dialogue with friends and acquaintances, and provide new insights into him as a thinker and as a commentator on his times, recounting his views on some of the greats of history, including Burckhardt, Goethe, Kant, Dostoevsky, Napoleon, and numerous others. In his selections, Gilman has carefully balanced documents concerning Nietzsche's personal life with others on his intellectual development, resulting in an entertaining and informative book that will appeal to a wide audience of educated readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of personal correspondence provides a rare window into the private life of the toweringnineteenth-century philosopher. Friedrich Nietzsche was the most iconoclastic philosopher of modern history. He is known to the world as the scathingly brilliant provocateur behind such foundational works as Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and Twilight of the Idols. This was Nietzsche as he addressed himself to the public. But in this collection of his personal letters, we discover a very different man: Nietzsche the devoted son; the caring friend; the university student; the shy and distant lover. Comprised of correspondence between Nietzsche’s inner circle—including several revelatory letters to his sister—Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher’s daily life.

Book The Portable Nietzsche

Download or read book The Portable Nietzsche written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1977-01-27 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Friedrich Nietzsche have fascinated readers around the world ever since the publication of his first book more than a hundred years ago. As Walter Kaufmann, one of the world’s leading authorities on Nietzsche, notes in his introduction, “Few writers in any age were so full of ideas,” and few writers have been so consistently misinterpreted. The Portable Nietzsche includes Kaufmann’s definitive translations of the complete and unabridged texts of Nietzsche’s four major works: Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, Nietzsche Contra Wagner and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In addition, Kaufmann brings together selections from his other books, notes, and letters, to give a full picture of Nietzsche’s development, versatility, and inexhaustibility. “In this volume, one may very conveniently have a rich review of one of the most sensitive, passionate, and misunderstood writers in Western, or any, literature.” —Newsweek

Book The Genealogy of Morals

Download or read book The Genealogy of Morals written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Genealogy of Morals" traces the episodes in the evolution of moral concepts with a view to confront "moral prejudices", specifically those of Christianity and Judaism. Some Nietzsche scholars consider Genealogy to be a work of sustained brilliance and power as well as his masterpiece. Since its publication, it has influenced many authors and philosophers. "Ecce Homo: How One Becomes What One Is" is the last book written by Nietzsche before his final years of insanity that lasted until his death in 1900. According to Walter Kaufmann, Nietzsche's most prominent English translators, the book offers "Nietzsche's own interpretation of his development, his works, and his significance." "Selected Letters" includes various personal letters by Nietzsche to his family and friends. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher, poet, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history. Because of Nietzsche's evocative style and provocative ideas, his philosophy generates passionate reactions. His works remain controversial, due to varying interpretations and misinterpretations of his work. In the Western philosophy tradition, Nietzsche's writings have been described as the unique case of free revolutionary thought, that is, revolutionary in its structure and problems, although not tied to any revolutionary project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. " In Mozart's Letters, Mozart's Life, Robert Spaethling presents "Mozart in all the rawness of his driving energies" (Spectator), preserved in the "zany, often angry effervescence" of his writing (Observer). Where other translators have ignored Mozart's atrocious spelling and tempered his foul language, "Robert Spaethling's new translations are lively and racy, and do justice to Mozart's restlessly inventive mind" (Daily Mail). Carefully selected and meticulously annotated, this collection of letters "should be on the shelves of every music lover" (BBC Music Magazine).
