The frost of intellectual pedantry blights the invention, and but for the text which explains the designs we might imagine that Envy, wounded by the palms and Iaurels of Virtue, was the victim and not the assailant. The actual drawing, nevertheless, is touched with the unfailing fire and magic of Leonardo's hand, and the stealthy amble of Death on four feet is as grim a piece of macabre imagination as can be found. To the right, another facing her with body and head thrown back and arms advanced, plays on the tambourine: her drapery flies loose also, making a full arched fold behind her shoulders; another fold passing over her chest conceals, and is caught up by, a cord about her waist: the artist seems to have misunderstood his original here, so that the drawing looks confused. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Drawings From Old Masters in the University Galleries and in the Library at Christ Church Oxford, Vol. 3 This study, hitherto unpublished and until two years ago quite unknown belongs to a small group or Florentine drawings to which the distinguished name of Verrocchio can wrth reasonable confidence be attached. To the student it is therefore an example of great impoitance, in spite of its unfortunate condition. It has at an early date been much worn and rubbed, no doubt by studio use. The outlines of the features and of the folds of hair and drapery have been pricked or 'pounced' for transfer, indicating that the drawing was actually used as the cartoon for a picture; a process which has somewhat disguised their original delicacy. In some places, moreover, as in the left eyelid and nostril and the lips and chin, these outlines have been corrected and reinforced with the pen, apparently before the pouncing and perhaps by the original draughtsman himself. Later, and this is the worst, the flesh parts, especially the cheek, throat, and shoulder, have been minutely and mechanically stippled over by the brush of some 'restorer' ignomnt of form and drawing, in a warm grey tone imperfectly harmonizing with that of the chalk. The parts which remain uninjured are nearly the whole of the hair, veil, and dress so far as it is shown, with some few portions of the more delicate modellings of the forehead, nose, cheek, and temple. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Drawings From Old Masters in the University Galleries and the Library at Christ Church, Oxford, Vol. 6 This rubbed and faded drawing is especially interesting as being one of the earliest known studies made by a Florentine hand after an antique of which the history can be traced. The original sarcophagus, in a fairly complete state, stood in the early days of the Renaissance (namely in 1491, the date of the manuscript Escorialensis, in which it is described) in the forecourt of the church of ss. Cosmas and Damian at Rome; Pirro Ligorio saw it still there in 1550-3; later it was transported to the Vatican, and later still was by some means broken up, so that nothing of it remains to-day but a fragment of the front in the Palazzo Salviati and the two end-pieces in the Vatican. (for a full account of the sarcophagus and all that is known of its history, with reproductions of other drawings, see Karl Robert, Die antiken sarkophag-relicfs, vol. II, pp. 96 foll., and Plate XXXIII.) In the present drawing the grouping and attitudes of the various figures of the sarcophagus front have been faithfully copied, as is proved by comparison with the other two drawings in the manuscripts Escorialensis and Urainianus (see Karl Robert, ibid) But the spirit of Florence at the close of the fifteenth century has touched the faces and expressions with Botticellian and non-classical sentiment. It seems doubtful if the drawing, of which the date must be about 1485 - 90, can be safely assigned to any individual artist. Mr. Berenson gives it to Granacci; if so, it must be of his quite earliest time, nor do I know any authenticated work of his showing in this degree the strain and pathos of Florentine fifteenth-century feeling.
