Book Selected Articles on Trade Unions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Articles on Trade Unions Classic Reprint written by Edna Dean Bullock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Articles on Trade Unions Out of the wealth of literature on trade unions, a limited selection for reprinting is planned to serve: 1. as a general historical, descriptive and critical exposition of the subject, 2. as the foundation for arguments on the benefits of trade unions to their members and to society. Advanced students of the subject may see no need of the general literature of so time-worn a subject, and no room for argument on what appears to be a one-sided topic. It should be remembered, however, that in many parts of our country, particularly where agriculture is the chief industry, trade unionism is absolutely unknown to the people, except through newspaper publicity given when some outrage of public welfare is charged against unionism. With a view to making this handbook useful to people whose sole knowledge has come from such sources, no blindly partisan literature has been reprinted. The publications of the American Federation of Labor and the National Association of Manufacturers are listed in the bibliography, and may be had by corresponding with the officers of those organizations. The bibliography is designed to be comprehensive enough to be of use to advanced students of the subject as well as to the general public and the debater. An earlier number of the Debaters' Handbook Series on the Open versus the Closed Shop contains an extensive bibliography. Duplication of reprints contained in the earlier number has been avoided. Book The Economics of Trade Unions

Download or read book The Economics of Trade Unions written by Hristos Doucouliagos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard B. Freeman and James L. Medoff’s now classic 1984 book What Do Unions Do? stimulated an enormous theoretical and empirical literature on the economic impact of trade unions. Trade unions continue to be a significant feature of many labor markets, particularly in developing countries, and issues of labor market regulations and labor institutions remain critically important to researchers and policy makers. The relations between unions and management can range between cooperation and conflict; unions have powerful offsetting wage and non-wage effects that economists and other social scientists have long debated. Do the benefits of unionism exceed the costs to the economy and society writ large, or do the costs exceed the benefits? The Economics of Trade Unions offers the first comprehensive review, analysis and evaluation of the empirical literature on the microeconomic effects of trade unions using the tools of meta-regression analysis to identify and quantify the economic impact of trade unions, as well as to correct research design faults, the effects of selection bias and model misspecification. This volume makes use of a unique dataset of hundreds of empirical studies and their reported estimates of the microeconomic impact of trade unions. Written by three authors who have been at the forefront of this research field (including the co-author of the original volume, What Do Unions Do?), this book offers an overview of a subject that is of huge importance to scholars of labor economics, industrial and employee relations, and human resource management, as well as those with an interest in meta-analysis.

Book Understanding European Trade Unionism

Download or read book Understanding European Trade Unionism written by Richard Hyman and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001-05-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `As one would expect, this is a well-crafted, literate and absorbing account of European trade union development. Established scholars and advanced students will enjoy the discussion of theory and cases′ - The Journal of Industrial Relations `[A] detailed and fascinating history of trade unions in the three countries [Britain, Germany, Italy]... considers how the unions could recover from the intense disarray of recent years′ - Labour Research `Everyone concerned over the construction of a truly social Europe will learn much from this thoughtful and probing study′ - Professor Colin Crouch, Istituto Universitario Europeo In this comprehensive overview of trade unionism in Europe and beyond, Richard Hyman offers a fresh perspective on trade union identity, ideology and strategy. He shows how the varied forms and impact of different national movements reflect historical choices on whether to emphasize a role as market bargainers, mobilizers of class opposition or partners in social integration. The book demonstrates how these inherited traditions can serve as both resources and constraints in responding to the challenges which confront trade unions in today′s working world.

Book Selected Articles on Modern Industrial Movements

Download or read book Selected Articles on Modern Industrial Movements written by Daniel Bloomfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Articles on Modern Industrial Movements This book presents the first collection in one volume of articles on modem industrial movements. It covers the most important printed material which has appeared in periodicals, reports and other important sources not easily accessible. Some subjects such as Socialism, Trade Unions, Compulsory Arbitration of Industrial Disputes, Compulsory Insurance, Minimum Wage, Open vs Closed Shop, Single Tax, are not included in this book as they are fully covered in other Handbooks published by The H. W. Wilson Company. The aim of the editor and compiler has been to present each subject from all angles so that the reader may have the opportunity of forming his own judgment as to the particular movements discussed. Not only will this handbook, therefore, be of value to students at schools and colleges, but it will also appeal to the business man and the industrial manager, and the workers in industry who want to know in some detail about important movements in industry. We can arrive at the truth best by balancing what authoritative proponents of such movements say, with the expressions of responsible writers who hold contrary points of view. A large amount of material was gone over before the articles in this volume were selected and the task was difficult because of the rapidly changing status of such movements as Bolshevism, and the Shop Stewards' Movement However, in those cases, the articles finally selected make clear the fundamentals underlying the growth of the movements and thus will serve their purpose in throwing light on the industrial thought of our time. Book The World According to China

Download or read book The World According to China written by Elizabeth C. Economy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An economic and military superpower with 20 percent of the world’s population, China has the wherewithal to transform the international system. Xi Jinping’s bold calls for China to “lead in the reform of the global governance system” suggest that he has just such an ambition. But how does he plan to realize it? And what does it mean for the rest of the world? In this compelling book, Elizabeth Economy reveals China’s ambitious new strategy to reclaim the country’s past glory and reshape the geostrategic landscape in dramatic new ways. Xi’s vision is one of Chinese centrality on the global stage, in which the mainland has realized its sovereignty claims over Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the South China Sea, deepened its global political, economic, and security reach through its grand-scale Belt and Road Initiative, and used its leadership in the United Nations and other institutions to align international norms and values, particularly around human rights, with those of China. It is a world radically different from that of today. The international community needs to understand and respond to the great risks, as well as the potential opportunities, of a world rebuilt by China.
