Book The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity

Download or read book The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity written by Jurgen Habermas and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1990-03-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critique of French philosophy and the history of German philosophy is a tour de force that has the immediacy and accessibility of the lecture form and the excitement of an encounter across national cultural boundaries as Habermas takes up the challenge posed by the radical critique of reason in contemporary French postmodernism. The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity is a tour de force that has the immediacy and accessibility of the lecture form and the excitement of an encounter across, national cultural boundaries. Habermas takes up the challenge posed by the radical critique of reason in contemporary French poststructuralism. Tracing the odyssey of the philosophical discourse of modernity, Habermas's strategy is to return to those historical "crossroads" at which Hegel and the Young Hegelians, Nietzsche and Heidegger made the fateful decisions that led to this outcome. His aim is to identify and clearly mark out a road indicated but not taken: the determinate negation of subject-centered reason through the concept of communicative rationality. As The Theory of Communicative Action served to place this concept within the history of social theory, these lectures locate it within the history of philosophy. Habermas examines the odyssey of the philosophical discourse of modernity from Hegel through the present and tests his own ideas about the appropriate form of a postmodern discourse through dialogs with a broad range of past and present critics and theorists. The lectures on Georges Bataille, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and Cornelius Castoriadis are of particular note since they are the first fruits of the recent cross-fertilization between French and German thought. Habermas's dialogue with Foucault—begun in person as the first of these lectures were delivered in Paris in 1983 culminates here in two appreciative yet intensely argumentative lectures. His discussion of the literary-theoretical reception of Derrida in America—launched at Cornell in 1984—issues here in a long excursus on the genre distinction between philosophy and literature. The lectures were reworked for the final time in seminars at Boston College and first published in Germany in the fall of 1985.

Book Swahili Muslim Publics and Postcolonial Experience

Download or read book Swahili Muslim Publics and Postcolonial Experience written by Kai Kresse and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swahili Muslim Publics and Postcolonial Experience is an exploration of the ideas and public discussions that have shaped and defined the experience of Kenyan coastal Muslims. Focusing on Kenyan postcolonial history, Kai Kresse isolates the ideas that coastal Muslims have used to separate themselves from their "upcountry Christian" countrymen. Kresse looks back to key moments and key texts—pamphlets, newspapers, lectures, speeches, radio discussions—as a way to map out the postcolonial experience and how it is negotiated in the coastal Muslim community. On one level, this is a historical ethnography of how and why the content of public discussion matters so much to communities at particular points in time. Kresse shows how intellectual practices can lead to a regional understanding of the world and society. On another level, this ethnography of the postcolonial experience also reveals dimensions of intellectual practice in religious communities and thus provides an alternative model that offers a non-Western way to understand regional conceptual frameworks and intellectual practice.

Book Tradition und Traditionsbruch zwischen Skepsis und Dogmatik

Download or read book Tradition und Traditionsbruch zwischen Skepsis und Dogmatik written by Claudia Bickmann and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Views of Violence written by Jörg Echternkamp and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first-century views of historical violence have been immeasurably influenced by cultural representations of the Second World War. Within Europe, one of the key sites for such representation has been the vast array of museums and memorials that reflect contemporary ideas of war, the roles of soldiers and civilians, and the self-perception of those who remember. This volume takes a historical perspective on museums covering the Second World War and explores how these institutions came to define political contexts and cultures of public memory in Germany, across Europe, and throughout the world.

Book Semiotics

Download or read book Semiotics written by Roland Posner and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the more recent branches of communication science the handbooks will give researchers both an verview and orientation. To attain these objectives, the series will aim for a standard comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines, and to this end will strive for comprehensiveness, theoretical explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed to this aim. The languages of publication are English, German, and French. The main aim of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no inflexible pre-set limits will be imposed on the scope of each volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume will be a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editor of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the others, being governed only by general formal principles. The series editor only intervene where questions of delineation between individual volumes are concerned. It is felt that this (modus operandi) is best suited to achieving the objectives of the series, namely to give a competent account of the present state of knowledge and of the perception of the problems in the area covered by each volume.

Book Die Macht des Ged chtnisses Entstehung und Wandel kommunaler Schriftkultur im sp tmittelalterlichen Augsburg

Download or read book Die Macht des Ged chtnisses Entstehung und Wandel kommunaler Schriftkultur im sp tmittelalterlichen Augsburg written by Mathias Franc Kluge and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Studies in Odyssey 11

Download or read book Studies in Odyssey 11 written by Odysseus Tsagarakis and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the main problems of the Eleventh Book of the Odyssey (the Nekyia) in the light of recent research. The journey to the underworld is not only troublesome in its composition but also important for its place in the poem, perhaps the most important of the hero's adventures. After a brief introduction, which surveys the present state of research and outlines methodology, the book examines in four chapters: 1. The question of the sources (borrowings, influences etc.) from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the Greek catabaseis (those of Heracles, Orpheus, Theseus and Peirithous) and cult practices at the Oracles of the Dead (the Thesprotian Oracle and that of Trophonius in Lebadeia). 2. The relation of our Nekyia to the poem and especially to the apologoi, as it is part of a larger composition, and its themes (journey to the land of the dead, catabasis, nekyomanteia). 3. The problematic parts of the Book and the question of their authenticity, Catalogue of Heroines, Intermezzo and Review of Hades. 4. The concepts of the Afterlife with the two contrasting views about the fate of psyche. There follows: a conclusion, which gives a summary of the results reached in the discussion of individual topics, select bibliography and the indexes (a Greek index, an index of passages and a general index).

Book The Mediterranean as a Source of Cultural Criticism

Download or read book The Mediterranean as a Source of Cultural Criticism written by Andrea Benedetti and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2019-11-26T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays contained in this volume explore the historical trajectories along which the Mediterranean has been conceptualized as a cultural, religious and economical resource and how these various aspects are intertwined. While staying clear of a merely “imagological” or “representational” point of view, the authors consider the interplay between culturally shaped attributions (for example the longstanding desire for a Mediterranean “Otherness” as expressed in German literature), their testing in empirical encounters, and the effect these encounters produce on both sides. Although focused particularly on 19th and 20th century culture, this volume offers a timely contribution to conceptualising the challenges of the 21st century. The conjunction of both provinciality and universality, the connectivity and fragmentation of the Mediterranean continues to be at the basis of the European matrix of all possible (hi)stories.
