Book excerpt: REEN sebak setiap kali teringatkan dia. Sudah tiga hari dia menangis. Cukuplah. Air matanya kini sudah kering untuk lelaki itu. Muka macam hero, tetapi hati macam binatang! Dasar manusia tidak berhati perut! Bencinya bukan dibuat-buat. Marahnya meluap-luap. Dia telah diperbodohkan oleh sepupu sendiri. Jadikan saudara sendiri seperti barang permainan dan bahan ketawa. Maruahnya dipertaruhkan. Dia berasa cukup terhina. Hinaan paling besar kerana saudara sendiri yang melakukannya. “Tak guna!” Reen menyumpah.

Book Zapin Folk Dance of the Malay World

Download or read book Zapin Folk Dance of the Malay World written by Mohd. Anis Md. Nor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the scholarly attention given to the research of dance and music in other South-East Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Malaysian performance traditions are rarely the focus of academic studies. Indeed, this is the first book to have been published on zapin, a Malaysian performing art which extends to Singapore and East Sumatra. The syncretic combination of Arab and Malay performance elements in this dance is explained in detail with the extensive use of dance notations and music transcriptions. The book argues that the transposition of zapin from a communal level to a national one involved not only a change in the context in which the dance is performed but also a change in its structure and cultural meaning. Finally, the book traces the historical evolution of the Malay dance form from a participatory art to one that is passively observed, and investigates the music and dance structure of the genre.

Book excerpt: History didn’t listen to women, but that never stopped them from speaking out ... A lot of history is made up of speeches. Speeches about big ideas, celebratory speeches, rousing speeches to inspire soldiers to fight to the death, comic speeches to help us see the funny side to life. From Jesus to Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King Jr. and even Donald Trump, we’ve been raised with the words of important men ringing in our ears ... But where are all the women? Unless you’re the type of person who loves researching suffrage speeches, you are unlikely to know many soundbites from women throughout history. Outspoken: 50 Speeches by Incredible Women is going to change that. From Joan of Arc and Virginia Woolf, to Oprah Winfrey and Greta Thunberg, this is a celebration of outstanding and outspoken women everywhere.

Book Accidental Office Lady

Download or read book Accidental Office Lady written by Laura Kriska and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young American businesswoman discovers life inside a Japanese corporation. Armed with a new degree in Japanese studies, plenty of youthful idealism, and a can-do attitude, a young woman accepts a job as the first American trainee at Honda's headquarters in Tokyo. Her image of Japanese corporate life is dramatically challenged on her first day at work when she is issued a blue polyester uniform--a uniform worn only by women! With good humor and accessible prose, Laura Kriska relates her journey through the company, from serving tea to executives and cleaning the boss's desk to a stint in public relations and developing training classes for Japanese associates going to America. The reader is rooting for Kriska as she recounts her struggle to adapt to--and ultimately thrive in--the culture of a traditional Japanese company. Shortly before her departure, she comes full circle by introducing a successful campaign to make women's uniforms optional. Now with a new foreword by the author, The Accidental Office Lady is a vivid and valuable firsthand account not only of corporate Japan and the gender inequality that persists within it, but of an outsider's successful attempt to work within cultural boundaries to affect organizational change.

Book Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution

Download or read book Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution written by Gertrude Himmelfarb and published by Ivan R. Dee Publisher. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her enduring study of the impact of Darwinism on the intellectual climate of the nineteenth century, Gertrude Himmelfarb brings massive documentation to bear in challenging the conventional view of Darwin's greatness. Touching on biography, history, and philosophy, she traces the origins and development of Darwin's views against the opinions of his time; assesses the influences on him; and shows what he intended his theory to mean, what his readers took it to mean, and what it has in fact meant. By such a route Ms. Himmelfarb recaptures "a sense of how a scientist, with the most innocent of intentions and the best of faith, can give birth to a theory that has an ancestry and a posterity of which he may be ignorant and a life of its own over which he has no control. "A thorough and masterly book punctuated with a delicate sense of humor.... Until he has read, marked, learnt and inwardly digested this authoritative volume, no one should presume henceforth to speak on Darwin and Darwinism." Times Literary Supplement "An illuminating contribution...a dramatic story."--Yale Review "Absorbing, well written, and splendidly organized."--I. Bernard Cohen

Book Darwinism Refuted

Download or read book Darwinism Refuted written by Hârun Yahya and published by . This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. So wrote Charles Darwin in The Origin of Species, where he made his theory of evolution public. The theory applied materialist philosophy to nature and challenged the consensus that life on earth is the artifact of the Creator. During the following 150 years, many in the scientific community assumed that Darwin had almost accomplished this task. Today, science demonstrates that they were mistaken. Findings in the last two decades alone have shattered the basis of the theory. Key branches of science, such as paleontology, biochemistry, population genetics, comparative anatomy, and biophysics, indicate one after another that natural laws and chance effects proposed by the theory cannot explain the origin of life. Life turns out to be infinitely more complex than Darwin imagined in his time demonstrating that his theory has absolutely broken down.
