The complicated Chinese characters used for reading and writing meant only rich, educated people could read—and that was just the way they wanted it. But King Sejong thought all Koreans should be able to read and write, so he worked in secret for years to create a new Korean alphabet. King Sejong's strong leadership and determination to bring equality to his country make his 600-year-old story as relevant as ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of educational know-how and systematic grammar organization acquired by the three authors from their experience actually teaching Korean to foreigners in the classroom. In focusing strictly on Korean grammar, this series represents a departure from most current integrated teaching materials, allowing foreign learners to more easily concentrate on grammar in their study of Korean. The authors have included real dialogues and illustrations to make the study of Korean more interesting, especially for those students who have heretofore felt Koran grammar to be difficult. Further, this series equally serves as a general Korean grammar reference that can be used by Korean language instructors both in Korea and abroad who regularly experience the difficulty of teaching Korean grammar first-hand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends that the long history of America’s interaction with Korea started with the signing of the Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation in 1882, and with the establishment of the Seward-Shufeldt Line. William Seward and Robert Shufeldt shared the same vision of achieving their American goal by opening Korea and extending the Seward-Shufeldt Line from Alaska to link it with the Philippines and the Samoan Islands, thus completing a perfect perimeter for the American era of the Pacific and for its dominance in the Asian market. Initiating diplomatic and trading relations with Korea was Commodore Shufeldt’s finishing touch on the plan for achieving American hegemony in the coming 20th century. In turn, the decline of Chinese sphere of influence over the Korean Peninsula and the fall of Russian power in the region, with the consequential rise of Japanese power there, which led to a change from the SS Line to the Roosevelts’ Theodore-Franklin Line, the colonization of Korea, the division of Korea, the Korean War, and has brought America back nearly full circle to that first encounter in Pyeongyang; the regrettable General Sherman Incident in 1866. This book argues that the United States must uphold its early commitment to peace and amity by now normalizing relations with North Korea in order to bring closure to the “Korean Question.”

Download or read book King Sejong the Great written by Young-Key Kim-Renaud and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Korea's cultural hero, King Sejong (r. 1418-1450), the inventor of the Korean alphabet. Written by internationally known scholars, it contains 14 chapters, with numerous color plates & illustrations. King Sejong is best known & loved by the Korean people for his invention of the Korean alphabet, usually considered the most scientific writing system the world has ever known. It was an extraordinary intellectual achievement but it was also an act of compassion. Sejong created the alphabet as an expression of love for his people & as part of an ideal theory of governance. For these same reasons, Sejong also ordered astronomical instruments & rain gauges assembled, rituals & music reformed, & movable metal type created. Sejong wanted his subjects to understand the natural world so they could interact efficiently, appropriately, & harmoniously with their environment. Sejong took the throne in the Choson dynasty's third decade & put it on such a strong foundation that it lasted for over five centuries, a remarkable record not just in East Asia but in world history. Through this concise & informative reader, the English-speaking public will understand why the very name Sejong evokes an image of human perfection in Koreans' minds. Download or read book P ungsu written by Hong-key Yoon and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a milestone in the history of academic research on the development and role of geomancy (fengshui in Chinese and p'ungsu in Korean) in Korean culture and society. As the first interdisciplinary work of its kind, it investigates many topics in geomancy studies that have never been previously explored, and contains contributions from a number of disciplines including geography, historical studies, environmental science, architecture, landscape architecture, religious studies, and psychoanalysis. While almost all books in English about geomancy are addressed to general readers as practical guides for divining auspicious locations, P'ungsu is a work of rigorous scholarship that documents, analyzes, and explains past and current practices of geomancy. Its readers will better understand the impact of geomancy on the Korean cultural landscape and appreciate the significant ecological principles embedded in the geomantic traditions of Korea; while researchers will discover new insights and inspirations for future research on geomancy not only in Korea, but in China and elsewhere.
