Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a newly developed theoretical definition of “missed opportunity,” Chances for Peace uses extensive sources in English, Hebrew, and Arabic to systematically measure the potentiality levels of opportunity across some ninety years of attempted negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict. With enlightening revelations that defy conventional wisdom, this study provides a balanced account of the most significant attempts to forge peace, initiated by the world’s superpowers, the Arabs (including the Palestinians), and Israel. From Arab-Zionist negotiations at the end of World War I to the subsequent partition, the aftermath of the 1967 War and the Sadat Initiative, and numerous agreements throughout the 1980s and 1990s, concluding with the Annapolis Conference in 2007 and the Abu Mazen-Olmert talks in 2008, pioneering scholar Elie Podeh uses empirical criteria and diverse secondary sources to assess the protagonists’ roles at more than two dozen key junctures. A resource that brings together historiography, political science, and the practice of peace negotiation, Podeh’s insightful exploration also showcases opportunities that were not missed. Three agreements in particular (Israeli-Egyptian, 1979; Israeli-Lebanese, 1983; and Israeli-Jordanian, 1994) illuminate important variables for forging new paths to successful negotiation. By applying his framework to a broad range of power brokers and time periods, Podeh also sheds light on numerous incidents that contradict official narratives. This unique approach is poised to reshape the realm of conflict resolution.

Book Ben Gurion

Download or read book Ben Gurion written by Anita Shapira and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ben-Gurion cast an enormous shadow across his world, and his legacy in the Middle East and beyond continues to be hotly debated to this day. There have been many books written about the life and accomplishments of the Zionist icon and founder of modern Israel, but this new biography by eminent Israeli historian Anita Shapira is the first to get to the core of the complex man who would become the face of a new nation. Shapira tells the Ben-Gurion story anew, focusing especially on the period in 1948 immediately following Israel's declaration of independence, a time few historians have concentrated on and none have explored in such intimate detail. Through her intensive research and access to Ben-Gurion's personal archives and rarely viewed documents and letters, the author gained powerful insights into his private persona. Her fascinating literary portrait of David Ben-Gurion bares the flesh-and-blood man inside the influential historical figure who brought the Zionist dream to full fruition.

Book The Click Moment

Download or read book The Click Moment written by Frans Johansson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the story of every great company and career, there is one defining moment when luck and skill collide. This book is about making that moment happen. According to Frans Johansson’s research, successful people and organizations show a common theme. A lucky moment occurs and they take advantage of it to change their fate. Consider how Diane von Furstenberg saw Julie Nixon Eisenhower on TV wearing a matching skirt and top, and created the timeless, elegant wrap-dress. That was a “click moment” of unexpected opportunity. Johansson uses stories from throughout history to illustrate the specific actions we can take to create more click moments, place lots of high-potential bets, open ourselves up to chance encounters, and harness the complex forces of success that follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, the world has been witnessing the most fundamental changes in global governance structure and international relations. Due to multipolarization, economic globalization, cultural diversification and information revolution, a number of rising global powers have become new players on the world stage, among which China, as the world’s 2nd largest economy now, is playing an increasingly important role. From the perspectives of economics, culture, new media, NGOs and international migration, this book studies the origin, history and reform of global governance, with a focus on the function and development of G20 regime. Regional governance and Sino-U.S. relations are discussed next to analyze how China should exploit its advantages to better play its role in world affairs. Finally, it offers policy recommendations for China to lead the reform of global governance and enhance its capability in agenda setting.
