Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seigneur Davie: A Sketch Life of David Riccio (Rizzio) In producing this little study of "Seigneur Davie" I shall probably be censured for printing an unnecessary book as there is so little in it (although there is a little) that has not been published before. But perhaps the illustrations may atone, as one is rare and the others are new to the world. The first of the hero of the book I owe to Lord Ruthven's Relation. The second (formerly belonging to the Dukes of Argyll) is in the possession of Lord Seaforth. The "Memorial Portrait," if we may so term it, of Queen Mary and her Singer, belongs to Sir Archibald Buchan Hepburn of Smeaton, Bart. Book The Invisible Bridge between the United Kingdom and Piedmont

Download or read book The Invisible Bridge between the United Kingdom and Piedmont written by Andrea Raimondi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History books frequently refer to supposed similarities between the Italian region of Piedmont and the United Kingdom and their respective inhabitants. Historians, with a certain degree of emphasis, have described as a “special relationship” or an “ancient friendship” this long-term and privileged liaison. Regardless of the rhetoric, an ancient friendship really did exist, and perhaps still does. The alliance between Piedmont and the United Kingdom, though temporarily spoiled by passing clouds, was cemented by the common French threat as well as the necessity, for the United Kingdom, of gaining access to the Mediterranean, while the Piedmontese state may not have survived situated between aggressive enemies and large empires without British backup. It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that both countries simply needed each other. However, what history books frequently neglect to recount are the existences of the individuals who, with their hopes, works and sometimes a certain degree of chance, contributed to the invisible bridge linking the Italian region with the British Isles. This book collects the stories of eight individuals and a special book in order to investigate UK-Piedmont relationships from an unusual and privileged perspective.

Book Mary Queen of Scots

Download or read book Mary Queen of Scots written by Retha M. Warnicke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scholars now have Warnicke to use as their chief one volume study of Mary" Julian Goodare, University of Edinburgh In this biography of one of the most intriguing figures of early modern European history, Retha Warnicke, widely regarded as a leading historian on Tudor queenship, offers a fresh interpretation of the life of Mary Stuart, popularly known as Mary Queen of Scots. Setting Mary's life within the context of the cultural and intellectual climate of the time and bringing to life the realities of being a female monarch in the sixteenth century, Warnicke also examines Mary's three marriages, her constant ill health and her role in numerous plots and conspiracies. Placing Mary within the context of early modern gender relations, Warnicke reveals the challenges that faced her and the forces that worked to destroy her. This highly readable and fascinating study will pour fresh light on the much-debated life of a central figure of the sixteenth century, providing a new interpretation of Mary Stuart's impact on politics, gender and nationhood in the Tudor era.
