Book excerpt: Dans le cadre de la recherche en vision par ordinateur, le problème que nous résolvons est celui de l'extraction et de la mise en correspondance de régions issues de paires d'images stéréoscopiques. Dans la première partie, nous présentons un algorithme de segmentation d'images par une technique de croissance de régions. Une stratégie de stockage de la hiérarchie des régions créées au cours de l'algorithme nous permet de nous affranchir des problèmes du choix des prédicats et des seuils qui leurs sont associés. Nous définissons une distance entre images de labels de régions pour produire des segmentations cohérentes au sein d'une paire d'images stéréo, dans le but de faciliter la recherche ultérieure de correspondances entre les régions. Nous faisons collaborer un détecteur de points de contours avec l'algorithme de croissance de régions de manière à profiter de leurs qualités respectives. Des résultats sur divers types d'images sont présentés, ainsi qu'une application à la segmentation d'images en couleurs. Dans la seconde partie nous présentons différentes méthodes pour trouver les couples de régions correspondantes, première étape vers l'obtention d'une description 3D de la scène. Nous décrivons d'abord un algorithme de mise en correspondance par recouvrement mutuel des régions analogues. Nous présentons ensuite des algorithmes recherchant des similarités entre les caractéristiques, photométriques et géométriques, des régions à apparier. Une troisième méthode nous permet d'effectuer la recherche de régions correspondance. Enfin, nous utilisons une technique d'optimisation globale, le recuit simulé, pour produire des appariements cohérents avec les voisinages des régions.

Les couples d'images de la même scène sont tout d'abord segmentes à la fois en régions et en contours. La coopération de ces deux traitements a pour but d'extraire des contours fiables et correctement détectés. Ces contours sont ensuite appariés et regroupés simultanément par un algorithme itératif se basant sur une étude de voisinage des contours. Les contours connectés sont dans un premier temps regroupés dans des ensembles appelés composantes connexes et appariés. Puis ce traitement est répèté en augmentant à chaque itération la distance séparant les contours et en prenant en compte des propriétés topologiques et géométriques des contours. Le résultat fourni est donc une description structurelle de l'image sous forme d'ensembles de contours appariés. Ces ensembles appariés sont ensuite utilisés par un traitement ayant pour but d'améliorer à la fois la description structurelle et la segmentation. Les appariements des contours, grâce à la connaissance du modèle géométrique des caméras du système, permettent ensuite, par triangulation, d'obtenir une description tridimensionnelle de l'image. Il est donc nécessaire de faire coopérer plusieurs processus de segmentation. Le travail réalisé dans cette thèse se divise en deux parties: 1) Développement d'une approche coopérative pour la segmentation d'images naturelles. Le principe consiste à utiliser la redondance entre les résultats obtenus par plusieurs segmentations «région» afin de localiser des germes qui ont une grande certitude d'appartenir à des régions homogènes. A partir de ces germes une procédure de croissance de régions basée sur les caractéristiques des germes permet d'agglomérer progressivement les pixels hors germes. Le processus est contrôlé par le gradient de l'image afin d'obtenir une meilleure précision sur les frontières des régions extraites. Les germes sont extraits par un mécanisme de fusion de plusieurs segmentations primaires. Ce mécanisme permet également de proposer une segmentation consensus entre les segmentations de départ. 2) Caractérisation quantitative du résultat de la segmentation: La mesure couramment utilisée est basée sur le pourcentage des pixels mal classés entre le résultat fourni par un algorithme de segmentation et une segmentation de référence. Cette mesure reste insuffisante car elle ignore toute information spatiale sur la localisation des frontières des régions. La nouvelle mesure proposée tient compte à la fois du nombre de pixels mal classés et de leurs localisations. Cette mesure de dissimilarité permet l'évaluation numérique du résultat d'un algorithme de segmentation sur des images où l'on connaît la segmentation de référence. De plus, elle permet d'étendre à l'espace des segmentations certaines techniques de filtrage développées dans le cas de signaux scalaires.

Le système séquentiel exécute ces mêmes méthodes suivant un ordonnancement établi. L'extraction des attributs pour segmenter les différentes régions est effectuée de manière adaptative en fonction de la nature uniforme (faiblement texturée) ou texturées des régions. Les deux systèmes sont composés de trois modules principaux. Le premier module permet de détecter la nature des régions de l'image (uniformes et texturées) afin d'adapter le type de traitement a posteriori. Le deuxième module est dédié à la segmentation des régions détectées en fonction de leur nature. Les résultats de segmentation sont évalués et validés à des niveaux différents du traitement. Le troisième module fusionne les résultats intermédiaires obtenus sur les deux types de région détectés. Les deux systèmes sont testés et comparés sur des images synthétiques et réelles, monocomposantes et multicomposantes de télédétection aérienne.

En particulier, différents systèmes satellitaires sont maintenant disponibles et produisent une quantité de données importante, utilisable pour l'observation de la Terre. En raison de cet important volume de données,les méthodes analytiques manuelles deviennent inadaptées pour un traitement efficace de ces données. Il devient donc crucial d'automatiser ces méthodes par des procédés informatiques, capables de traiter cette quantité de données hétérogènes.Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nos recherches se sont focalisées sur le développement de nouvelles approches basées régions (i.e., segmentation et classification) permettant l'extraction de plusieurs niveaux de connaissance et d'information à partir d'ensembles d'images à différentes résolutions spatiales. De telles images offrent en effet des vues différentes de la scène étudiée, ce qui peut permettre de faciliter l'extraction des objets d'intérêt. Ces derniers étant structurés sous la forme de hiérarchies d'objets complexes, nos travaux se sont naturellement tournés (1) vers l'utilisation d'approches de segmentation hiérarchique fournissant des ensembles de partitions de la scène à différents niveaux de détail et (2) vers l'intégration de connaissances de haut-niveau dans les processus de fouille de données. De manière plus générale, nous nous sommes intéressés à élaborer un outil informatique reposant sur une stratégie d'analyse descendante,similaire à celle d'un utilisateur, qui consiste à interpréter la scène en considérant, en premier lieu, les grandes zones composant les territoires (à partir des images aux résolutions les plus grossières) puis à affiner récursivement le niveau d'interprétation pour en extraire des zones plus spécialisées (à partir des images aux résolutions les plus fines).L'ensemble de ces travaux a été implanté dans une bibliothèque logicielle et validé dans le contexte de l'analyse d'environnements urbains à partir d'ensembles d'images multi résolutions.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of overview articles showing how space-based observations, combined with hydrological modeling, have considerably improved our knowledge of the continental water cycle and its sensitivity to climate change. Two main issues are highlighted: (1) the use in combination of space observations for monitoring water storage changes in river basins worldwide, and (2) the use of space data in hydrological modeling either through data assimilation or as external constraints. The water resources aspect is also addressed, as well as the impacts of direct anthropogenic forcing on land hydrology (e.g. ground water depletion, dam building on rivers, crop irrigation, changes in land use and agricultural practices, etc.). Remote sensing observations offer important new information on this important topic as well, which is highly useful for achieving water management objectives.Over the past 15 years, remote sensing techniques have increasingly demonstrated their capability to monitor components of the water balance of large river basins on time scales ranging from months to decades: satellite altimetry routinely monitors water level changes in large rivers, lakes and floodplains. When combined with satellite imagery, this technique can also measure surface water volume variations. Passive and active microwave sensors offer important information on soil moisture (e.g. the SMOS mission) as well as wetlands and snowpack. The GRACE space gravity mission offers, for the first time, the possibility of directly measuring spatio-temporal variations in the total vertically integrated terrestrial water storage. When combined with other space observations (e.g. from satellite altimetry and SMOS) or model estimates of surface waters and soil moisture, space gravity data can effectively measure groundwater storage variations. New satellite missions, planned for the coming years, will complement the constellation of satellites monitoring waters on land.
