Book The Reality of ESP

Download or read book The Reality of ESP written by Russell Targ and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California apartment. Desperate to find her, the police called physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a psychic retired police commissioner. As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, “That’s the ringleader.” The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes. That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP. Another occurred when his group made $120,000 by forecasting for nine weeks in a row the changes in the silver-commodity futures market As a scientist, Targ demands proof. His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972. This twenty-million dollar program launched during the Cold War was supported by the CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army and Air Force Intelligence. The experiments they conducted routinely presented results could have happened by chance less than once in a million. Targ describes four types of experiments: Remote Viewing, in which a person describes places and events independent of space and time. For example, while in California Price drew to scale a Soviet weapons factory at Semipalitinsk with great accuracy later confirmed by Satellite photography. In another remote viewing, Targ accurately sketched an airport in San Andreas, Columbia himself. Distant Mental Influence, where the thoughts of the experimenter can positively or negatively affect the physiology (heart rate, skin resistance, etc.) of a distant person. Whole field isolation, where someone in a state of sensory isolation accurately describes the visual experiences of someone else in another place Precognition and retrocausality, showing that the future can affect the past. That is, the elephant you see on television in the morning can be the cause of your having dreamed about elephants the previous night. Final chapters present evidence for survival after death; explain how ESP works based on the Buddhist/Hindu view of our selves as nonlocal, eternal awareness; discuss the ethics of exercising psychic abilities, and show us how to explore ESP ourselves. “I am convinced,” Targ says, “that most people can learn to move from their ordinary mind to one not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Who would not want to try that?”

Book The Science of Ghosts

Download or read book The Science of Ghosts written by Joe Nickell and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are ghosts real? Are there truly haunted places, only haunted people, or both? And how can we know? Taking neither a credulous nor a dismissive approach, this first-of-its-kind book solves those perplexing mysteries and more--even answering the question of why we care so very much. Putting aside purely romantic tales, this book examines the actual evidence for ghosts--from eyewitness accounts to mediumistic productions (such as diaphanous forms materializing in dim light), spirit photographs, ghost-detection phenomena, and even CSI-type trace evidence. Offering numerous exciting case studies, this book engages in serious investigation rather than breathless mystifying. Pseudoscience, folk legends, and outright hoaxes are challenged and exposed, while the historical, cultural, and scientific aspects of ghost experiences and haunting reports are carefully explored. The author--the world's only professional paranormal investigator--brings his skills as a stage magician, private detective, folklorist, and forensic science writer to bear on a topic that demands serious study.

Book The Mystery Chronicles

This new casebook reveals the secrets of the Winchester Mystery House, the giant Nazca drawings of Peru, the Shroud of Turin, the "Mothman" enigma, the Amityville Horror house, the vicious goatsucking El Chupacabras, and numerous other "unexplainable" paranormal phenomena. Nickell has traveled far and wide to solve cases, which include a weeping icon in Russia, the elusive Bigfoot-like "yowie" in Australia, the reputed power of a headless saint in Spain, and an "alien hybrid" in Germany. He has gone undercover—often in disguise—to reveal the tricks of those who pretend to talk to the dead, accompanied a Cajun guide into a Louisiana swamp in search of a fabled monster, and gained an audience with a voodoo queen. Superstar psychic medium John Edward, pet psychic Sonya Fitzpatrick, evangelist and healer Benny Hinn, and many other well-known figures have found themselves under Nickell's careful scrutiny. The Mystery Chronicles examines more than three dozen intriguing mysteries. Nickell uses a hands-on approach and the scientific method to steer between the extremes of mystery mongering and debunking. His investigative skills have won him both acclaim and controversy during his long career as one of the world's foremost paranormal investigators.

Book Extrasensory Deception

Download or read book Extrasensory Deception written by Henry Gordon and published by Buffalo, N.Y. : Prometheus. This book was released on 1987 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of the paranormal can be a strange and fascinating place. Mystery and adventure may lurk around every corner, waiting to be explored. Henry Gordon has journeyed through this realm of psychic powers and has come back kicking. In an eye-opening collection of essays, aptly titled ExtraSensory Deception, Gordon, a professional magician and journalist, takes on psychics, astrologers, myth-makers and other assorted purveyors of the paranormal, and shines the light of common sense into the murky darkness that is the world of paranormal claims. Culled from Gordon's weekly columns for the Toronto Sunday Star, this book collects his commentaries on "The Paranormal", "Prophecy", "Spirits", "Superstition", "Pseudoscience", "Higher Life", and "Truth". Not one to pull punches, he gives a hard-hitting, often humorous, first-person account of his adventures among some of the "big names" in the paranormal movement, including New Age heroine Shirley MacLaine, faith-healer Peter Popoff, UFO guru Stanton (the Flying Saucer Physicist) Friedman, and psychic superstar Uri Geller. Gordon exposes the methods used by "psychics" and other practitioners of "extrasensory" powers for what they are - the sleight-of-hand and mentalist tricks that he and other magicians have used on stage for decades. The focus of the book is not, however, to merely debunk the excessive and unverifiable claims made by the paranormalists. As Gordon states, "It seems clear. Once a person comes under the influence of these supernatural beliefs, his or her mind ceases to function at a normal level of reasoning." By laying bare the dangers of uncritical acceptance of such claims, this book makes an impassioned plea for an increased use of rational intelligence and critical thinking skills for solving our problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover Remarkable Stories Of ESP & Its Involvement In Solving Murder Cases Is it possible for humans to perceive a reality beyond the sense organs? Do we possess potential powers which are not yet fully realized? A psychic is a person who is allegedly using extrasensory perception - or ESP - to recognize information which is otherwise hidden from the normal senses. People who claim to have psychic powers are often heavily scrutinized by both career skeptics and the general public alike, and for very good reasons... Thought to be a product of a highly tuned intuitive mind - psychic powers are mostly intangible - and their manifestations can vary greatly in both quality and consistence, depending on the makeup of the individual conduit. These vagaries make these phenomena very attractive to all sorts of hucksters and scammers, who often claim to have abilities which they do not possess. However - amidst all the via-phone "fortune tellers", cold-reading grievance profiteers and shady office wizards - there are people who seem to be a bit different. These are individuals who do not scurry away so easily when push comes to shove. During the course of this book we will explore eleven different cases of murder. These are not simply your everyday crime stories, however. These are all cases where an alleged psychic either accurately predicted the details about - or even directly assisted with the solving of - a horrifying killing. Whatever your views on the paranormal phenomena may be, the accounts detailed here will make you wonder, "Do psychic powers actually exist"?
