Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hatred, Emptiness, and Hope offers an updated vision of psychoanalytic object relations theory, revealing its application to transference focused psychotherapy (TFP), a treatment approach derived from and related to psychoanalysis. With empirical studies carried out by the Personality Disorders Institute at Weill Cornell as a basis, this volume expands the applications of TFP, illustrating it at work in scenarios that include severe personality disorders, disturbances in sexuality and love relations of narcissistic personalities, inpatient hospital treatment, and group settings. It also looks at the implications of new developments in neurobiology on psychoanalytic object relations theory. Readers will benefit from a discussion of the practice of TFP itself, with chapters that tackle the supervision of psychoanalysis, challenges for the future of psychoanalysis, and innovations that can serve to strengthen its role as a profession, a treatment approach, and a social organization within mental health sciences. It focuses on the analysis of particular clinical features of personality pathologies and describes the consideration of contemporary psychoanalytic object relations theory as a general theoretical frame of treatment that permits to conceptualize both normal personality functioning and the very nature of personality disorders. This volume also includes my recent efforts to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between neurobiological dispositions and their interaction with psychodynamic developments, again, both in normality and psychopathology. Finally, this volume explores the application of object relations theory to group processes, love relations, and therapists' training"--

Download or read book Objects of Hope written by Steven H. Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of the concept of hope in human affairs, psychoanalysts have long had difficulty accepting responsibility for the manner in which their various interpretive orientations and explanations of therapeutic action express their own hopes for their patients. In Objects of Hope: Exploring Possibility and Limit in Psychoanalysis, Steven Cooper remedies this longstanding lacuna in the literature, and, in the process, provides a thorough comparative analysis of contemporary psychoanalytic models with respect to issues of hope and hopefulness. Cooper's task is challenging, given that the most hopeful aspects of human growth frequently entail acceptance of the destructive elements of our inner lives. The analysis of hope, then, implicates what Cooper sees as a central dialectic tension in psychoanalysis: that between psychic possibility and psychic limit. He argues that analysts have historically had difficulty integrating the concept of limit into a treatment modality so dedicated to the creation and augmentation of psychic possibility. And yet, it is only by accepting the realm of limit as a necessary counterpoise to the realm of possibility and clinically embracing the tension between the two realms that analysts can further their understanding of therapeutic process in the interest of better treatment outcomes. Cooper persuasively demonstrates how each psychoanalytic theory provides its own logic of hope; this logic, in turn, translates into a distinctive sense of what the analyst may hope for the patient, and what the patient is encouraged to hope for himself or herself. Objects of Hope brings ranging scholarship and refreshing candor to bear on the knotty issue of what can and cannot be achieved in the course of psychoanalytic therapy. It will be valued not only as an exemplary exercise in comparative psychoanalysis, but also as a thoughtful, original effort to place the vital issue of hope at the center of clinical concern.

Book excerpt: This nine-chapter book narrates a writing-centered approach to the teaching of literature and literary research. As the title suggests, the book also embraces a thematic approach to reading and writing about twentieth-century American literature, focusing on the grounds for hope in an age of despair. The first five chapters explore in detail the teaching of the twentieth-century American literature course at the University of Pristina in Kosovo, where the author served as Fulbright Professor of American Literature in the spring semester of 2012. Throughout, these chapters narrate students’ in-class interactions to illustrate writing-to-learn strategies for teaching the literature.Chapter six then follows the same cohort of 22 students as they learned to ground their literary research in their own questions about American and Balkans narratives of oppression and liberty, of despair and hope. The last three chapters document the responses of students and their professors to this American theme of liberty and hope as seen through the Balkans lenses of ethnic violence and emerging republican government. Specifically, chapter seven focuses on students’ participation in a blog featuring Balkans literature that explores the same issues of liberty and justice examined in the American literature they have read. Chapter eight then celebrates student writing, the fruit of the writing-to-learn strategies narrated in earlier chapters. Finally, chapter nine narrates professors’ and students’ responses, gathered through surveys and interviewing, to questions about their country’s violent past and the value of literary study in preparing citizens to shape a new republic.
