Book Recent Sediments of Monterey Bay

Book excerpt: The heavy mineralogy of the sand fraction for beach samples reported by Sayles (1966) and 10 new offshore samples from South Monterey Bay was determined optically. For each sample the percentage of the more diagnostic transparent minerals is plotted graphically in order of persistence: zircon, garnet, biotite, apatite, clinozoisite and epidote, lawsonite, green hornblende, oxy-horneblende, glaucophane, sphene, zoisite, augite, jadeite, hypersthene, enstatite, and tremolite and actinolite. Additional data on accessory transparent minerals, composite grains (rock fragments) and opaque minerals are listed with each graph. An updated bibliography is presented to include all new work on the geology and sediment of Monterey Bay. (Author).

Book Recent Sediments of Monterey Bay California

Download or read book Recent Sediments of Monterey Bay California written by Thomas E. Yancey and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monterey Bay, California's second largest bay, is the focus of drainage for three rivers draining an area in excess of 6,000 square miles in the adjacent Coast Ranges. The possibility that Monterey Bay has served as the outlet for drainage of the Central Valley during the late Tertiary has been suggested by many people, and the presence of the largest submarine canyon and the largest deep sea fan in California outside Monterey Bay is supporting evidence for this theory. The present work is primarily a description of the sediment cover in Monterey Bay and an analysis of the numerous variables controlling the distribution and accumulation of sediment within the bay. Book A Photographic Reconnaissance of the Microrelief in the Monterey and Carmel Submarine Canyons California

Download or read book A Photographic Reconnaissance of the Microrelief in the Monterey and Carmel Submarine Canyons California written by John Alexander Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 500 underwater photographs were taken in the Monterey and Carmel submarine canyons for the purpose of studying their microrelief. The pictures indicated that a variety of biological and physical differences exist not only within each canyon but also between the two nearby canyons. In MOnterey Canyon are to be found fine grain sediments which have been very actively churned by benthic organisms. Few rock outcrops were noted, and definitive evidence of current activity in the form of ripple marks was observed in only one region. Carmel Canyon included generally coarser grain material than Monterey Canyon and showed a marked absence of active burrowing. A large number of rock outcrops was observed and there appeared to be extensive current activity throughout most of the canyon. (Author).

Book The Sediments in the Head of Carmel Submarine Canyon

Download or read book The Sediments in the Head of Carmel Submarine Canyon written by Steven Russell Wallin and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmel Submarine Canyon is cut into the Santa Lucia granodiorite formation and is the only canyon on the California coast which is cut in granite rock. The innermost head of the canyon exhibits a wide, bowl-shaped appearance, not unlike a glacial cirque. Granodiorite outcrops on the submarine terrace on the north and south sides of the canyon and in the north canyon wall. Much of the terrace and upper canyon sides are covered by coarse sand while the interior of the canyon head is covered with fine sand. The canyon is actively transporting sediment to deeper water at the present time. The chief source of sediments is coarse sand which is littorally transported from the mouth of Carmel River. This sand enters the canyon by way of three 'rivers of sand' which extend over the canyon rim and down the slopes. Additional transport of sediment within the canyon head may be the result of slumps and slides lubricated by decomposition of vegetable matter incorporated in the sediments. (Author).

Book The Southern Monterey Bay Littoral Cell

Download or read book The Southern Monterey Bay Littoral Cell written by Craig E. Dorman and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sediment budget was developed for southern Monterey Bay, California. This budget is based heavily upon sediment information obtained from field and laboratory studies. These studies included a detailed quasi-synoptic areal sampling to determine distribution of textural patterns, and a time-series study of beach and surf-zone sand samples obtained from local sand-mining companies. Results from these studies were combined with data on river discharge, the wind and wave regimes, and shoreline changes during the past century to develop quantitative estimates of sediment gains and losses to the cell. It was determined that the major sources of sediment are the discharge from the Salinas River which empties into the northeast corner of the cell, and erosion of Quaternary seacliffs which form the inner bay shore. Major sinks are the Monterey Submarine Canyon, active coastal dune fields, the mining companies, and the offshore area. The recent history of the sediment regime in the southern bay is reviewed, and a forecast of future nearshore changes is made. Recommendations for further work needed to refine the budget computations are presented. (Author).
