Book Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous Clearwater Formation Cold Lake Alberta

Download or read book Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous Clearwater Formation Cold Lake Alberta written by G. Glen McCrimmon and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lower Cretaceous (Aptian to Albian) CLearwater Formation at Cold Lake, Alberta contains a complex assemblage of silicicastic strata. On the basis of detailed core analyses, Clearwater Formation strata have been subdivided into eight lithofacies and six recurring, facies associations. These facies associations are: (1) Tidal bar, (2) Sand flat, (3) Tidal-fluvial channel, (4) Fluvial channel, (5) Shoreface to foreshore, and (6) Offshore.

Book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada

Download or read book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada written by D.F. Stott and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early chapters of the volume present data and interpretations of the geophysics of the craton and summarise, with sequential maps, the tectonic evolution of the craton. The main body of the text and accompanying plates and figures present the stratigraphy, structural history, and economic geology of specific sedimentary basins and regions. The volume concludes with a summary chapter in which the currently popular theories of cratonal tectonics are discussed and the unresolved questions are identified.

Book Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation in the Qattara Depression North Western Desert Egypt

Download or read book Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation in the Qattara Depression North Western Desert Egypt written by Safiya M. Hassan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qattara Depression is part of the Northwestern Desert in Egypt and is home to the second lowest point in Africa at -133 meters below sea level. Therefore, before any projects can be carried out in this area, we must first understand the geology of the land. The present study deals with the high-resolution sequence stratigraphic analysis of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation outcrops in the Qattara Depression Region. The literature on the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the Moghra Formation has been sparse to date, despite some excellent work over the years by academic and petroleum workers. Moreover, the area studied is within what was once a front-line of World War II, where mine fields and war relics are scattered and cover wide reaches. This has resulted in limited geologic mapping in the past. Thus, great attention is paid in this study to establishing a robust sedimentology and high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework for the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation. Included are works based on outcrops and, most importantly, new sedimentological and chronostratigraphic information not previously available.

Book Recent Advances in Models of Siliciclastic Shallow marine Stratigraphy

Download or read book Recent Advances in Models of Siliciclastic Shallow marine Stratigraphy written by Gary J. Hampson and published by SEPM Soc for Sed Geology. This book was released on 2008 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siliciclastic shallow-marine deposits record the interface between land and sea, and its response to a variety of forcing mechanisms: physical process regime, the internal dynamics of coastal and shelfal depositional systems, relative sea level, sediment flux, tectonic setting, and climate. These deposits have long been the subject of conceptual stratigraphic models that seek to explain the interplay between these various forcing mechanisms, and their preservation in the stratigraphic record. This volume arose from an SEPM research conference on shoreline-shelf stratigraphy that was held in Grand Junction, Colorado, on August 24-28, 2004. The aim of the resulting volume is to highlight the development over the last 15 years of the stratigraphic concepts and models that are used to interpret siliciclastic marginal-marine, shallow-marine, and shelf deposits.

Book Fluvial Tidal Sedimentology

Download or read book Fluvial Tidal Sedimentology written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial-Tidal Sedimentology provides information on the ‘Tidal-Fluvial Transition', the transition zone between river and tidal environments, and includes contributions that address some of the most fundamental research questions, including how the morphology of the tidal-fluvial transition zone evolves over short (days) and long (decadal) time periods and for different tidal and fluvial regimes, the structure of the river flow as it varies in its magnitude over tidal currents and how this changes at the mixing interface between fresh and saline water and at the turbidity maximum, the role of suspended sediment in controlling bathymetric change and bar growth and the role of fine-grained sediment (muds and flocs), whether it is possible to differentiate between ‘fluvial’ and ‘tidally’ influenced bedforms as preserved in bars and within the adjacent floodplain and what are the diagnostic sedimentary facies of tidal-fluvial deposits and how are these different from ‘pure’ fluvial and tidal deposits, amongst other topics. The book presents the latest research on the processes and deposits of the tidal-fluvial transition, documenting recent major field programs that have quantified the flow, sediment transport, and bed morphology in tidal-fluvial zones. It uses description of contemporary environments and ancient outcrop analogues to characterize the facies change through the tidal-fluvial transition. Presents the latest outcomes from recent, large, integrated field programs in estuaries around the world Gives detailed field descriptions (outcrop, borehole, core, contemporary sediments) of tidal-fluvial deposits Accesses new models and validation datasets for estuarine processes and deposits Presents descriptions of contemporary environments and ancient outcrop analogues to characterize the facies change through the tidal-fluvial transition
