Book Sedimentation Potential Biological Effects of Dredging Operations in Estuarine and Marine Environments

Download or read book Sedimentation Potential Biological Effects of Dredging Operations in Estuarine and Marine Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the process of dredging, sediments are excavated and relocated. At various points in the process some volume of sediment is injected into the water column, either at the dredging site or at the dredged material disposal site. The amounts may be relatively small (e.g., around operating hydraulic cutterheads) or substantial (e.g., unconfined open-water disposal). The fate of these resuspended sediments, even if uncontaminated, is source of concern. Potential detrimental effects generally fall into two categories: water column effects (i.e. exposure to suspended sediments) and sedimentation effects. Potential impacts of suspended sediments on aquatic organisms have previously been reviewed (e.g., Newcombe and Jensen 1996; Wilber and Clarke 2001); however, only recently has the subject of sedimentation in the context of dredging effects received effects of sedimentation focuses on freshwater streams rather than coastal water bodies. This technical note summarizes the current scientific literature with emphasis on effects of uncontaminated, bedded sediments on estuarine and marine organisms. This review consolidates existing information on sedimentation effects, identifies aspects of natural and anthropogenic sedimentation processes that may be problematic, and identifies gaps in the current state of knowledge necessary for prudent dredging project management and resource protection.

Book Ecological Effects of Dredging and Dredge Spoil Disposal

Download or read book Ecological Effects of Dredging and Dredge Spoil Disposal written by James Walter Morton and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to prepare a comprehensive review of the literature on the physical, chemical, and biological effects of dredging and spoil disposal in estuaries and to identify alternative spoil disposal methods. Specific objectives were to identify the most critical problems relating to dredging and spoil disposal and to summarize the progress made to date in solving these problems. Using literature search facilities, bibliographies, and communications with experts throughout the United States, about 520 scientific and technical articles on dredging and spoil disposal were screened. Information extracted from selected articles is included in this review.

Book Practical Handbook of Estuarine and Marine Pollution

Download or read book Practical Handbook of Estuarine and Marine Pollution written by Michael J. Kennish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensive handbook presents up-to-date coverage of significant developments in estuarine and marine pollution. Multidisciplinary in approach, Practical Handbook of Estuarine and Marine Pollution is an essential resource for anyone involved in the study or management of coastal and marine pollution problems. The book examines in detail anthropogenic effects on estuarine and marine ecosystems from local, regional, and global perspectives. A truly international collection of data is presented in an organized framework on a wide range of subject areas, including eutrophication, organic loading, oil pollution, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, trace metals, radioactive waste, dredging and dredged-spoil disposal, and effects of electric generating stations. Whether you are a student, a scientist, a policy maker, or an administrator, you no longer need to spend countless hours rounding up information and data - Practical Handbook of Estuarine and Marine Pollution has already done it for you.

Book Disposal of Dredge Spoil

Download or read book Disposal of Dredge Spoil written by Marden B. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents an assessment of the dredge spoil disposal problem and outlines a research program designed to provide needed information concerning current and potential spoil disposal practices. The report format is intended to reflect the two basic objectives of the report. Section A is directed toward management level review and presents (a) pertinent background information concerning the dredge spoil disposal problem and the current study, (b) conclusions and recommendations resulting from the problem assessment phase of the study, and (c) an outline of the recommended research program. Section B provides an objective assessment of the nationwide problem in sufficient detail to permit meaningful technical review by other interested personnel within and outside the Corps. Section C has been included to show a total-problem organizational structure which is being used to guide the development of the detailed research plan.

Book Environmental Aspects of Dredging

Download or read book Environmental Aspects of Dredging written by R. N. Bray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.
