Book excerpt: The change in global climate is one of the highly speculative aspects in the Northern Hemipsphere, especially the onset of glaciation. Advances and retreats of grounded ice sheets during glacial- interglacial times play an important role in terms of the deposition of large sediment deposits. Depositional patterns on the continental slope and rise reflect interactions between the effects of ice sheet fluctuations, mass transport processes and bottom currents. A for the first time applied seismostratigraphy on the Northeast Greenland margin made it possible to differentiate between glacial (younger than Middle Miocene) and pre-glacial (older than Middle Miocene) sediment units. Glacial advances and retreats appear not to have been synchronous along the continental margin. Therefore, either north of 70 N the extension of the shelf by glacial erosion seems to be more intensive like on the Southeast Greenland margin or the onset of glaciation started earlier in the north than in the south. This study demonstrates the interaction between sediment accumulation, climatic changes and changes in ocean circulation.

Mainly results of the authors' own studies are represented, with special emphasis on glacial/interglacial variability and land-ocean interaction. The book is aimed at sedimentologists, quaternary and marine geologists, paleoclimatologists and paleoceanographers, as well as being of great interest to students in the related fields.

Book excerpt: We investigated sediment flux across an ice-dominated, high latitude continental margin, using cores from the East Greenland Shelf (ca. 68 deg N). Density, weight percentages of the various sediment components, and sediment/age relations (AMS C- 14 dates) were investigated from cores collected 1988 and 1990. High-resolution DTS Huntec surveys indicated 10-20 m of acoustically transparent sediment. Maximum core length was 3 m and most of the gravity cores were between 1-2 m. The radiocarbon assays show that basal core sediments date between ca. 9,000 and 14,500 BP. The acoustic characteristics, the low dry volume densities (ca. 600 kg/m3 and the faunal and floral assemblages suggest ice-distal conditions between ca. 14,500 and the present. Net sediment flux in the Kangerdlugssuaq Trough during the last 14,500 years has been low; this might be explained by either (1) cold-based glaciological conditions of the East Greenland ice sheet; and/or (2) efficient sediment trap(s) lying along the inner shelf/fjords of East Greenland.

Book excerpt: Although it is generally accepted that the Arctic Ocean is a very sensitive and important region for changes in the global climate, this region is the last major physiographic province of the earth whose short-and long-term geological history is much less known in comparison to other ocean regions. This lack of knowledge is mainly caused by the major technological/logistic problems in reaching this harsh, ice-covered region with normal research vessels and in retrieving long and undisturbed sediment cores. During the the last about 20 years, however, several international and multidisciplinary ship expeditions, including the first scientific drilling on Lomonosov Ridge in 2004, a break-through in Arctic research, were carried out into the central Artic and its surrounding shelf seas. Results from these expeditions have greatly advanced our knowledge on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironments. Published syntheses about the knowledge on Arctic Ocean geology, on the other hand, are based on data available prior to 1990. A comprehensive compilation of data on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironment and its short-and long-term variability based on the huge amount of new data including the ACEX drilling data, has not been available yet.
