Book Resolving the Late Paleozoic Ice Age in Time and Space

Download or read book Resolving the Late Paleozoic Ice Age in Time and Space written by Christopher R. Fielding and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume summarizes new developments in understanding the longest-lived icehouse period in Phanerozoic Earth history, the late Paleozoic ice age. Resolving the Late Paleozoic Ice Age in Time and Space provides summaries of existing and new data from the various Gondwanan continental relics, and also reviews stratigraphic successions from the paleotropical and temperate regions of Laurussia that preserve an indirect record of glaciation. It addresses the extent to which records of glaciation indicate protracted, long-term climatic austerity, as opposed to fluctuating, more dynamic climate, and provides new constraints on the timing of glaciation. Additionally, it tackles questions of synchroneity of glaciation across the various Gondwanan continental relics, and timing relationships between near-field and far-field records at greater levels of resolution than has been possible previously. Results point toward a dynamic icehouse regime that is comparable to the Cenozoic icehouse, and away from traditional interpretations of the late Paleozoic ice age as a single, protracted event that involved stable, long-lived ice centers."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book Sediment Diagenesis written by A. Parker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of sediment diagenesis is of fundamental importance to industry in the evaluation of hydrocarbon and water reservoir rocks. Detailed knowledge of the diagenetic textures, fabrics, and minerals, and a prediction of the regional diagenetic response, partly controls hydrocarbon recovery programmes. In other words, knowledge of the diagenesis can aid (or even control) conservation policy. Similarly, facies and diagenetic trends w.ithin basins can influence exploration policy. This volume incorporates the majority of the principal contributions given to the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in the University of Reading, U.K., from July 12th-25th, 1981, at which the major themes of carbonate and terrigenous clastic sediments were treated sequentially from deposition to deep burial. Eighty selected scientists from twelve NATO and three other countries participated in the Institute. The keynote addresses which acted as the touchstones for discussion are presented here in the expectation that they will stimulate a still wider audience. We gratefully acknowledge the award of a grant from the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO to run the Institute, and also the cooperation of the University of Reading. Mrs. D. M. Powell helped in many ways with the organisation, and also retyped the entire manuscript of this book. A. Parker B. lv. Book Ice Ages Climate Dynamics and Biotic Events The Late Pennsylvanian World

Download or read book Ice Ages Climate Dynamics and Biotic Events The Late Pennsylvanian World written by S.G. Lucas and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Pennsylvanian was a time of ice ages and associated climate dynamics. A major reduction in Gondwana ice-volume was followed by a prolonged period of relative global warmth, culminating in the last great ice age of the late Paleozoic. It also was a major turning point in the evolution of life on land, when the coal forests of the Middle Pennsylvanian gave way to new kinds of Late Pennsylvanian wetland vegetation, and new kinds of animals appeared. Changes in the terrestrial biota began during the Middle Pennsylvanian, accelerating and proceeding in a spatially complex manner throughout the Late Pennsylvanian. The Late Pennsylvanian is thus a laboratory for studying environmental changes in a glacial world, and for assessing coeval biotic changes, in part to establish the possible links between the two. No book has been dedicated to this time interval, so this volume fills a gap in our understanding of a dynamic Late Pennsylvanian world that is much like the late Cenozoic world.

Book Deposition and Diagenesis of the Early Permian Lower Parmeener Supergroup Limestones Tasmania

Download or read book Deposition and Diagenesis of the Early Permian Lower Parmeener Supergroup Limestones Tasmania written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lower Parmeener Supergroup consists of 500 to 900 metres of marine and terrigenous sedimentary rocks, deposited in the high-latitude Tasmania Basin during the late Carboniferous to middle Permian, at the end of the late Paleozoic ice age. Two bioclastic carbonate units, the Darlington and Berriedale limestones, are of particular interest due to their formation in this polar, cold-water environment. Both limestones contain ice-rafted debris scattered throughout, signifying numerous icebergs, and are under- and over-lain by glendonitic siltstone indicating near-freezing seawater. Despite the unusual environment, seawater in the Permian Tasmania Basin was, with the exception of an anomalously high d13C value, isotopically and chemically similar to modern seawater. These limestones consist of a high-abundance, low-diversity heterozoan assemblage, dominated by large, robust brachiopods, bryozoans, and Eurydesma bivalves. Sponge spicules and crinoids are locally important constituents. The carbonates are interpreted to have been deposited in mid-shelf environments during sea-level highstands, where the faunal communities were beyond the depths of grounding icebergs, and sufficiently outboard from terrigenous sediment influx and brackish water. Growth and preservation of biogenic carbonates were promoted by up-welling of nutrient-rich water, which sustained high levels of primary productivity in the water column and phosphate concentrations in the sediment. Lower Parmeener Supergroup carbonates were exposed to a complex series of diagenetic processes, commencing on the seafloor and continuing during rapid burial. Limestone composition was further modified by diagenetic fluids associated with the intrusion of Mesozoic igneous rocks. Alteration in the marine paleoenvironment was both destructive and constructive; although dissolution took place there was also coeval precipitation of fibrous calcite cement, phosphate, and glauconite. These processes are interpreted to hav.
