Download or read book Quantitative Techniques for the Analysis of Sediments written by Daniel F Merriam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative Techniques for the Analysis of Sediments: An International Symposium is a compilation of studies about the integration and application of statistics, mathematics, and computers in the field of sedimentology. The book includes 13 studies from different experts in the field of sedimentology. These studies discuss topics such as the analysis and management of systems suitable for sedimentological data; the different methods of analysis and the numerical classification of different sedimentological data; and the assessment of quantitative methods in comparing lithological succession data. Also included is the trend analysis of sedimentary thickness data; numerical classification of multi-variate petrographic presence-absence data by association analysis; and the mathematical modeling and statistical recognition of terrestrial and marine sediments. The text will interest those in the field of sedimentology and geology, especially those who are engaged in research and wish to be aided by the different techniques included.

Download or read book Source and Sediment written by Hillert Ibbeken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deciphering provenance - this is the study of how far geology, geomorphology and climate of a source, a mountainous area, may be reconstructable from its erosional products released to the sea; from gravel and sand, from silt, sand, clay which recombine to form a new cycle of rocks. The purpose of this book is to give a quantitative picture of both source and sediment and the masses involved in the flux of material; based on a modern case study in Calabria, southern Italy, a mountain range which is part of an active plate margin. High erosion rates in the past (200mm/ka), and dramatic ones at present (1500mm/ka), make the area a powerful source of sediment comparable to orogenic conditions of the geological past. The book presents the first systematic, quantitative and data-bank supported study - here a larger source with small rivers and their sedimentary products - of the complex topic of provenance of terrigenous sediments and related mass balances at an active plate margin. It may serve as an orientation for corresponding research in other plate tectonic realms.

Download or read book Historical Trends in Pollutant Loadings to Lake Erie written by Robert Proctor Apmann and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates historical trends in pollutant loadings to Lake Erie. The first of two sections of this report analyzes information on the amount of sediments delivered to Lake Erie and discusses historical trends in sediment yield. There are two primary sources of data: (1) measurements of suspended sediment load made in some of the tributary rivers and (2) analyses of shoreline erosion and sedimentation rates in Lake Erie. These lead to a subsequent analysis of the sediment budget. Since the loading of contaminants to the lake is manifested by sedimentation, results are presented of analyses of contamination inputs from bottom coring. Trends in precipitation, runoff, and lake levels have been analyzed and are presented followed by the calculation and tabulation of the average surface water runoff to Lake Erie. The second section of the report deals primarily with the sources and inputs of the two nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen, to Lake Erie. There is little specific information on those inputs, and, therefore, information has been assembled from other locations on the sources of these nutrients. The historical growth in population in the Lake Erie Basin has also been traced.

Download or read book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis written by Andrew Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a practical handbook for those engaged in the task of analyzing the paleogeographic evolution of ancient sedimentary basins. The science of stratigraphy and sedimentology is central to such endeavors, but although several excellent textbooks on sedimentology have appeared in recent years little has been written about modern stratigraphic methods. Sedimentology textbooks tend to take a theoretical approach, building from physical and chemical theory and studies of mod ern environments. It is commonly difficult to apply this information to practical problems in ancient rocks, and very little guidance is given on methods of observation, mapping and interpretation. In this book theory is downplayed and the emphasis is on what a geologist can actually see in outcrops, well records, and cores, and what can be ob tained using geophysical techniques. A new approach is taken to stratigraphy, which attempts to explain the genesis of lithostratigraphic units and to de-emphasize the importance of formal description and nam ing. There are also sections explaining principles of facies analysis, basin mapping methods, depositional systems, and the study of basin thermal history, so important to the genesis of fuels and minerals. Lastly, an at tempt is made to tie everything together by considering basins in the con text of plate tectonics and eustatic sea level changes.
