Book excerpt: Sustainable livelihood security of resource poor farmers is the top priority for the nation today. However, there is wide gap in productivity of various horticultural commodities among different eco-regions, where horticulture can play significant role particularly in arid and semi arid regions, it is far below than the potential productivity. Hence, sustained and steady growth in rural income is critical for positive impact on living standard of various stakeholders. Therefore, an appropriate strategy needs to be devised for such climatically vulnerable regions. The net income of farmers can surely be increased by efficient management of nutrient, water and agri-input, integrated horticulture based farming system, better market price realization, post harvest management and value addition, integration of secondary enterprises and thereby improving productivity of arid and semi-arid horticultural crops. In this book, several such interventions are given in the form of various chapters which will be of immense use improving the productivity and profitability of horticultural commodities. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This title is co-published with NIPA.

Book Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale

Download or read book Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale written by Phil Owens and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-10-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediments are a natural part of aquatic systems and they are essential for the hydrological, geomorphological and ecological functioning of those systems. For society they are important and represent an important resource. However, due to the ever increasing use of river catchments, sediments need to be managed in a balanced and sustainable way. Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale reviews some of the key requirements and challenges facing scientists, river basin managers, and policy makers for sustainable sediment management at the river basin scale, and puts forward important recommendations. This volume also available as part of a 4-volume set, ISBN 0444519599. Discount price for set purchase.* First book to consider management at the basin scale* State-of-the-art review chapters* New conceptual frameworks and approaches to management

Book Reservoir Sedimentation

Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by Kumkum Bhattacharyya and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoir Sedimentation: Assessment and Environmental Controls appraises the issues of sedimentation in reservoirs and discusses measures that can be employed for the effective management of sediment to prolong the operational life of reservoirs. It provides information for professional consultants and policymakers to enable them to manage dams in the best possible way, in order to ensure their sustainability as well as the sustainability of water resources in general. It examines the effects of anthropogenic intervention and management of sediment in dams and reservoirs, as water resources become more sensitive and the demand for clean water continues to increase. Features: Examines the issue of sedimentation in dams and reservoirs and presents water management strategies to alleviate environmental issues Presents methods to help ensure the environmental sustainability of dams and reservoirs, as well as the sustainability of water resources- with consideration of climate change and increased demand Illustrates the spatial distribution of sedimentation characteristics for several dams using geographic information systems (GIS) Explains the relationships between loss in capacity and catchment characteristics Examines regional variation in sediment yield, defines geomorphic regions on the basis of similar hydrometeorology, physiography, geology, and vegetation affecting reservoirs

This book was released on 2013-07-20 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and effective. Contaminated sediment management is a difficult and costly exercise that is rarely addressed with easily identified and implemented remedies. It is hoped that this book can help identify and implement management approaches that provide an optimal, if not entirely satisfactory, solution to sediment contaminant problems.

Book Rapid Evaluation of Sediment Budgets

Download or read book Rapid Evaluation of Sediment Budgets written by Leslie M. Reid and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many land-management decisions would be aided by an understanding of the current sediment production and transport regime in a watershed and of the likely effects of planned land use on that regime. Sediment budgeting can provide this information quickly and at low cost if reconnaissance techniques are used to evaluate the budget. Efficient budget construction incorporates seven steps: careful definition of the problem to be addressed; collection of background information; subdivision of the project area into uniform sub-areas; interpretation of aerial photographs; fieldwork; analysis; and checking of results. Methods used in field-work and analysis must be selected according to the types of hillslope and channel processes active, the goals of the analysis, and the level of precision required. Methods for evaluating erosion and sediment transport rates are described, and four examples are given to demonstrate budget applications and construction.
