Download or read book Predator Nation written by Charles H. Ferguson and published by Currency. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ferguson, who electrified the world with his Academy Award-winning documentary, Inside Job, now reveals how rogues with influence have taken over the country and are driving it to financial and social ruin. In Predator Nation, Ferguson exposes the networks of academic, government, and congressional influence--in all recent administrations, including Obama's--that prepared the path to conquest. He reveals how once-revered figures like Alan Greenspan and Larry Summers have become mere courtiers to the elite. And based on many newly released court filings, he details the extent of the crimes--there is no other word--committed in the frenzied chase for storied wealth that marked the 2000s. And, finally, he lays out a brief plan of action for how we might take it back.
Download or read book Countering Economic Crime written by Axel Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic crime is a significant feature of the UK’s economic landscape and yet despite the government’s bold mission statements ‘to hold those suspected of financial wrongdoing to account’ as part of their ‘day of reckoning’ and ‘serious about white-collar crime’ agenda, there is a sense that this is still not being done effectively. This book examines the history of the creation of the UK’s anti-economic crime institutions and accompanying legislation, providing a critique of their effectiveness. The book analyses whether the recent regulatory regime is fit for purpose as well as being appropriate for the future. In order to explore how the UK’s economic crime strategies could be improved the book takes a comparative approach analysing policy and legislative responses to economic crime in the United States and Australia in order to determine whether the UK could or should import similar structures or laws to improve the enforcement of UK economic crime.

Download or read book The Power from the Top written by Esther Pieterse and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-Corruption and Compliance programmes in multinational companies have become a common standard. In order for these programmes to be effective, international guidelines and best practice provide that Top Management needs to demonstrate Tone from the Top. However, it remains unresolved what Tone from the Top implies in practice and how it influences the effectiveness of anti-corruption. This book explores theoretically and empirically, what Tone from the Top means and how it can influence decision making with respect to corruption. Data was obtained from Nigerian managers within the oil and gas industry when facing corruption in an experimental environment. An innovative research design, the Drill Bit Business Simulation, was applied which imitates the realities and corruption opportunities of the Nigerian oil and gas sector. Results show how Tone from the Top influences moral and social motivations, which in turn steer the decision of managers whether to engage in corruption. On the basis of these new insights on corrupt decision-making in companies and the influence of Tone from the Top, this book provides practical recommendations on how anti-corruption programmes can be designed to become more effective.

Download or read book Broken Bargain written by Kathleen Day and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A sweeping account of financial calamities . . . shows how often we’ve been wracked by crises, and how quickly we forget why, setting up the next one.” —Mark Zandi, Chief Economist, Moody’s Analytics In the 1930s, battered and humbled by the Great Depression, the U.S. financial sector struck a grand bargain with the federal government. Bankers gained a safety net in exchange for certain curbs on their freedom: transparency rules, record-keeping and antifraud measures, and fiduciary responsibilities. Despite subsequent periodic changes in these regulations, the underlying bargain played a major role in preserving the stability of the financial markets as well as the larger economy. By the free-market era of the 1980s and 90s, however, Wall Street argued that rules embodied in New Deal–era regulations to protect consumers, and ultimately taxpayers, were no longer needed—and government agreed. This clear, deeply researched history documents the country’s financial crises, focusing on those of the 1920s, the 1980s, and the 2000s, revealing how the two more recent crises arose from the neglect of this fundamental bargain, and how taxpayers have been left with the bill. “An engaging analysis . . . The section on the S & L crisis is excellent.” —Choice “A fluent if dispiriting study of an economic system that forgives those at the top so long as those at the bottom remain willing to foot the bill.” —Kirkus Reviews
