Download or read book Securing our energy future A review of Nova Scotia s energy sector in 2004 written by Larry Hughes and published by Canadian Centre Policy Alternatives. This book was released on 2005 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of Nova Scotia energy sector in 2004 Summary In 2003 and 2004, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy released annual "progress reports", intended to explain how the province was meeting the goals and objectives outlined in the 2001 Energy Strategy. [...] The province's existing Energy Strategy discuses energy security, primarily in terms of how the province's offshore natural gas supplies could be used to enhance the energy security of Nova Scotia, Canada and the US. [...] The reality is that the vast majority of the province's energy is imported leaving the Nova Scotia vulnerable to the volatility of the world energy markets. [...] One of the expected benefits of the offshore, touted by the Energy Strategy, was the development of a strong offshore services sector. [...] Given the decline in natural gas production from Nova Scotia's offshore, LNG appears to be one of the ways the province can continue to be a "player" in the natural gas field.

[...] With respect to oil and gas development, the main themes of the energy plan include: • A focus on increased oil and gas production at the expense of economic development and envi- ronmental sustainability; • A weakened regulatory environment for the oil and gas sector, including allowing offshore oil development and coalbed meth- ane production; and With oil and gas reserves shrinking • A movement [...] In 2003, a request for proposals led to "over- subscription" in the plan and the Ministry of Energy and Mines increased the royalty credit for that year to $30 million.29 Then, in June 2004, the BC government signed a $40 million agreement with a private company to upgrade the Sierra Yoyo Desan Resource Road in order to "generate an increase in oil and gas exploration and development activities in [...] The BC energy plan expresses a bias towards lifting the moratorium (Policy 11), though the exact language is ambiguous: it calls for the Ministry of Energy and Mines to both "develop a provincial posi- tion" on the moratorium and "move...toward development of offshore resources." Download or read book Electric Vehicles written by Joao Vitor Fernandes Serra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern electric vehicles (EVs) are well suited to most people's general transport needs. Despite this, their adoption at a large scale has been grindingly slow. What are the reasons for this? Unlike most books which focus on the technical aspects of EV performance, this guide sets out the commercial and political barriers to their increased use and lays out the ways in which these barriers can be overcome. It begins by charting the rise of the internal combustion engine, and detailing the problems associated with it which are driving efforts to electrify transportation. It goes on to introduce readers to the main EV technologies and examines the key issue of energy storage and recharging infrastructure. The remaining chapters explore the cost-effectiveness of electric mobility, the differing adoption trajectories by which EVs may come to increase in prominence, and the way in which policy can be tailored to encourage this rise. The book covers industrialized and emerging economy contexts, the latter of which have the greatest opportunities – and most urgent need – to take the EV development route. Requiring no specialist engineering knowledge to understand and written in an engaging, accessible style, this is a valuable primer and resource for people in business, policy or study who are keen to understand, encourage and capitalize on the transition to electric mobility.
