Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live a life shrouded in secrecy? On 3 January 1983, an 18-year-old college student from South Georgia entered the Main Entrance of CIA''s fortified compound in Langley, Virginia, where she raised her right hand and swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Standing there, she could never have imagined the ways in which she would honor that oath before she exited those same doors almost 32 years later - moving from supporting various CIA missions to serving as a "bad insider" who exposed a critical weakness that impacted the entire Intelligence Community to handling one of the Agency''s most prized reporters to building, leading, and managing sensitive, high-profile operations pursuing foreign spies and terrorists - or the family who would be impacted by all of this. A Life of Service, Sacrifice, and Secrets is a gripping first-hand account of a small-town girl determined to serve her country, who found her life''s purpose in a covert CIA career that spanned the Cold War to the Global War on Terror. Did key figures and opportunities just happen to surface around her over the years, repeatedly landing her in a position to make a difference, or did a Higher Power have a hand in those events? This teen from the Bible Belt rose through the Agency ranks, ultimately using her talents to both enhance national security and to disrupt the efforts of foreign spies and terrorists. LaRee Harding wrote this deeply personal memoir for her daughters, not only to share her life lessons but also to provide them a glimpse into what she was doing when she missed so much of their lives. Equally important, she hoped her story demonstrates that sometimes good things happen when life doesn''t unfold as we planned. After almost a year of pushing, former colleagues persuaded LaRee to publish her story. They stressed that this first-hand account of her career provided a unique, realistic window into CIA Intelligence Officers'' work and home life. LaRee is quick to note that CIA employees knowingly sign up for A Life of Service, Sacrifice, and Secrets, but it is thrust upon their families. For a variety of reasons, she chose to publish this version under a pseudonym. As LaRee did not intend to publish this memoir, she is donating 100% of her portion of the royalties to The CIA Officers Memorial Foundation -- an independent charity supporting the needs of CIA families. "Of all the books I''ve read about the CIA, this engaging account is the best for capturing the home and work life of an intelligence officer. LaRee''s perceptiveness, competence, energy, and passion for the CIA mission shine through as she outlines her valuable lessons learned. Anyone wondering what it is like to work inside should read this leader and mother of two children''s account of her remarkable career." - Mike Mears, retired CIA Chief of Human Capital "This story brilliantly illustrates the sacrifices CIA officers make through love of country and dedication to making the world a safer place. These sacrifices are not made in a vacuum and forever impact our families, but in the end you hope you make them proud." - M.A. Sotos, retired CIA "A gripping read. It''s been over 10 years since I picked up a book and read it all the way through, non-stop. I couldn''t put it down. So many of the stories told reminded me of moments in my own career...some of the vignettes even generated familiar memories of the stresses of urgency and uncertainty. At the front end of my application, an officer interviewing me recommended to me a specific book as a window into the biz. Great book, but this one is better and more relevant today. I seriously believe it should be in the applicant curriculum." - callsign "Hippo", retired CIA Operations Officer

Download or read book The Art of Sacrifice in Chess written by Rudolf Spielmann and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st Century Edition of Spielmann’s Classic Work Austrian Grandmaster Rudolf Spielmann’s The Art of Sacrifice in Chess first appeared in the mid-1930s. It was immediately recognized as a classic, a masterpiece that examined the nature of chess sacrifices. In this modernized, 21st century edition, all of Spielmann’s original work has been preserved. The antiquated English Descriptive Notation has been replaced with modern Figurine Algebraic, and German grandmaster Karsten Müller has added his own notes to Spielmann’s original text. But the German grandmaster has gone far beyond simply inserting clarifying commentary. Müller has virtually doubled the size of the original work by adding eleven new chapters, including: The Greek Gift Sacrifice Bxh2/7+; Disaster on g7; The Achilles’ Heel f7; Strike at the Edge; Destroying the King’s Shelter; Sacrifices on f6; Sacrifices on e6; The Magic of Mikhail Tal; Shirov’s Sacrifices; and The Fine Art of Defense. There are exercises at the end of each new chapter to help you hone your skill of sacrificing. “Grandmaster Karsten Müller’s notes to the original text, along with the new material, brilliantly complements Spielmann’s classic work. A welcome addition to any chessplayer’s library...” – Garry Kasparov
Download or read book Child Sacrifice in Ancient Israel written by Heath D. Dewrell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many religious acts condemned in the Hebrew Bible, child sacrifice stands out as particularly horrifying. The idea that any group of people would willingly sacrifice their own children to their god(s) is so contrary to modern moral sensibilities that it is difficult to imagine that such a practice could have ever existed. Nonetheless, the existence of biblical condemnation of these rites attests to the fact that some ancient Israelites in fact did sacrifice their children. Indeed, a close reading of the evidence—biblical, archaeological, epigraphic, etc.—indicates that there are at least three different types of Israelite child sacrifice, each with its own history, purpose, and function. In addition to examining the historical reality of Israelite child sacrifice, Dewrell’s study also explores the biblical rhetoric condemning the practice. While nearly every tradition preserved in the Hebrew Bible rejects child sacrifice as abominable to Yahweh, the rhetorical strategies employed by the biblical writers vary to a surprising degree. Thus, even in arguing against the practice of child sacrifice, the biblical writers themselves often disagreed concerning why Yahweh condemned the rites and why they came to exist in the first place.

Don't Let Him Know sweeps up multiple generations of a family, moving from an illicit encounter in a Calcutta park to an unlikely friendship forged at a Carbondale gay bar, from midnight snacks of a great-grandmother's mango chutney to wayward temptations at a McDonald's drive-thru. Download or read book Sacrifice and Initiative in Chess written by Ivan Sokolov and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: lThe sacrifice is one of the most beautiful, rewarding and complex aspects of chess. During a game the decision to give up material in order to get an advantage is probably the most difficult one a player has to take. Often, you have to burn your bridges without being able to fully calculate the consequences. Risks and rewards are racing through your mind, fighting for precedence while the clock keeps ticking. Now is the moment, because after the next move the window for this opportunity may be closed. In this book Ivan Sokolov presents a set of practical tools that will help you to master the art of sacrifice. By concentrating on the aim you are trying to achieve, rather than on the opening you are playing or the piece you might be going to sack, he teaches you how to come to a reasonable risk assessment and how to trust your intuition. There is a separate part on seizing the initiative without actually giving up material. Ivan Sokolov has written an entertaining and instructive guide, packed with useful advice and lots of practical examples.

Download or read book The Mysteries of Artemis of Ephesos written by Guy MacLean Rogers and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artemis of Ephesos was one of the most widely worshiped deities of the Graeco-Roman World. Her temple, the Artemision, was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and for more than half a millennium people flocked to Ephesos to learn the great secret of the mysteries and sacrifices that were celebrated every year on her birthday. In this work Guy MacLean Rogers sets out the evidence for the celebration of Artemis's mysteries against the background of the remarkable urban development of the city during the Roman Empire and then proposes an entirely new theory about the great secret that was revealed to initiates into Artemis's mysteries. The revelation of that secret helps to explain not only the success of Artemis's cult and polytheism itself but, more surprisingly, the demise of both and the success of Christianity. Contrary to many anthropological and scientific theories, the history of polytheism, including the celebration of Artemis's mysteries, is best understood as a Darwinian tale of adaptation, competition, and change.

Download or read book Silence and Sacrifice written by Merav Shohet and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do families remain close when turbulent forces threaten to tear them apart? In this groundbreaking book based on more than a decade of research set in Vietnam, Merav Shohet explores what happens across generations to families that survive imperialism, war, and massive political and economic upheaval. Placing personal sacrifice at the center of her story, Shohet recounts vivid experiences of conflict, love, and loss. In doing so, her work challenges the idea that sacrifice is merely a blood-filled religious ritual or patriotic act. Today, domestic sacrifices—made largely by women—precariously knot family members together by silencing suffering and naturalizing cross-cutting gender, age, class, and political hierarchies. In rethinking ordinary ethics, this intimate ethnography reveals how quotidian acts of sacrifice help family members forge a sense of continuity in the face of trauma and decades of dramatic change.
