Book Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals

Download or read book Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals written by Brian Kennedy and published by Blue Snake Books. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret training manuals, magic swords, and flying kung fu masters—these are staples of Chinese martial arts movies and novels, but only secret manuals have a basis in reality. Chinese martial arts masters of the past did indeed write such works, along with manuals for the general public. This collection introduces Western readers to the rich and diverse tradition of these influential texts, rarely available to the English-speaking reader. Authors Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo, who coauthor a regular column for Classical Fighting Arts magazine, showcase illustrated manuals from the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Republican period. Aimed at fans, students, and practitioners, the book explains the principles, techniques, and forms of each system while also placing them in the wider cultural context of Chinese martial arts. Individual chapters cover the history of the manuals, Taiwanese martial arts, the lives and livelihoods of the masters, the Imperial military exams, the significance of the Shaolin Temple, and more. Featuring a wealth of rare photographs of great masters as well as original drawings depicting the intended forms of each discipline, this book offers a multifaceted portrait of Chinese martial arts and their place in Chinese culture.

Book Hidden Hands

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phillip Starr
  • Publisher : Blue Snake Books
  • Release : 2010-11-23
  • ISBN : 1583942432
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Hidden Hands written by Phillip Starr and published by Blue Snake Books. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solo forms or sets of a martial art may appear to be merely flashy performances or rote exercises for conditioning, and because of this many students disregard this aspect of their training. True martial arts masters, however, know that the forms of a system actually contain all of the techniques and secrets of that system—if one knows how to look for them. Often called the “great books” of martial arts, forms are crucial for a deeper understanding of the art one practices. In Hidden Hands, Phillip Starr provides detailed instruction in the art of reading martial arts forms: by first mastering rudimentary “words” (individual techniques) and then moving on to simple “sentences” (combinations of techniques), the student will come to understand forms as ancient documents that contain the true essence of their art. Starr discusses different aspects of forms practice such as rhythm, timing, spirit, and performance, and presents specific guidelines for interpreting the movements of various forms. The book ends with the dissection and interpretation of a complete form. Containing examples from Chinese, Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean martial arts, Hidden Hands shows serious practitioners how to improve in any art and style.

Book Secrets of Shaolin Temple Boxing

Download or read book Secrets of Shaolin Temple Boxing written by Robert W. Smith and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the secrets of Shaolin Temple boxing also known as Shaolin Kung Fu with this illustrated matrtial arts guide. Shaolin Temple boxing is the father of all boxing forms in China and is a close ancestor of Japanese karate. Despite the widespread study of Shaolin kung fu, however, the true origins and history of this exciting martial art have been obscured by wildly fanciful myths and legends that have arisen over the centuries, leading martial-arts authority Robert W. Smith to remark, "There are no good books on Shaolin Temple boxing. There are only varying degrees of poor." In Taiwan, however, Smith had the good fortune to discover a short, anonymous work in Chinese that he believed revealed the essence of Shaolin. This kung fu book is the English version of that text. Abundantly and attractively illustrated, it is a fascinating account of the history of an ancient martial art, as well as a concise martial arts manual explaining the fundamental philosophy and techniques of Shaolin Temple boxing.

Book Okinawan Karate Teachers Styles Secret Techniques Revised Expanded Second Edition Master Version

Download or read book Okinawan Karate Teachers Styles Secret Techniques Revised Expanded Second Edition Master Version written by Mark D Bishop and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progression is a positive trait, as long as one keeps in touch with the past and has a staple backdrop to focus or fall back on. Although the Revised Expanded Third Edition contains all the wording and photographs that are reproduced in both the first edition, as well as this Revised and Expanded Second Edition, it comparatively represents a step into what was, for these latter two books, the future. The year 2019, in which I am writing this foreword, represents respectively 30 years and 20 years into the future since the publication of these two books, so I think this faithful reproduction of the Master Version by Q&I Publications is well timed. For some readers it might bring about nostalgia, for others it might be an eye-opener into a world that is not always truthfully represented, due to commercial or other reasons. For the teachers who I interviewed and have been embodied herein, I hope this Master Version will remain a testament into how they wished to be represented for time immemorial.

Book Secrets of Phoenix Eye Fist Kung Fu

Download or read book Secrets of Phoenix Eye Fist Kung Fu written by Cheong Cheng Leong and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master the terrifyingly effective Phoenix Eye Fist style of Chinese Kung Fu with this illustrated martial arts guide. The Secrets of Phoenix-Eye Fist Kung-Fu depicts an enormously potent art, also known as Chuka Shaolin, that does not depend on strength or size. Instead, it utilizes a special striking technique, the phoenix-eye fist, aimed at vital points on the opponent's body. Phoenix-Eye Fist Kung-Fu excels at close-range fighting—an area neglected in many other martial arts—and employs a variety of lightning-fast strikes and kicks. Due to its deadly efficacy, there is no sparring in Chuka Shaolin, but instead complex two-person practice forms are employed—both for empty-handed fighting and for fighting with weapons—in which the practitioners fight all-out, and are protected only by a precise knowledge of the form. With hundreds of clear photographs, The Secrets of Phoenix-Eye Fist Kung-Fu reveals: The fundamental techniques of the empty-handed art A complete breakdown of the two-person empty-hand practice forms Detailed instruction in Chuka Shaolin pole fighting, including the practice forms An overview of the other weapons used in Chuka Shaolin, including the sai, the twin knives, the spear, and the farmer's hoe Special forms of Chi Kung designed to increase striking power, increase vitality, and aid in resisting and healing injuries
