Book Sociology of Secrecy and of Secret Societies

Download or read book Sociology of Secrecy and of Secret Societies written by Georg Simmel and published by Human and Literature Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All relationships of people to each other rest, as a matter of course, upon the precondition that they know something about each other. The merchant knows that his correspondent wants to buy at the lowest price and to sell at the highest price. The teacher knows that he may credit to the pupil a certain quality and quantity of information. Within each social stratum the individual knows approximately what measure of culture he has to presuppose in each other individual. In all relationships of a personally differentiated sort there develop, as we may affirm with obvious reservations, intensity and shading in the degree in which each unit reveals himself to the other through word and deed. How much error and sheer prejudice may lurk in all this knowing is immaterial. Just as our apprehension of external nature, along with its elusions and its inaccuracies, still attains that degree of truth which is essential for the life and progress of our species, so each knows the other with whom he has to do, in a rough and ready way, to the degree necessary in order that the needed kinds of intercourse may proceed. That we shall know with whom we have to do, is the first precondition of having anything to do with another. The customary reciprocal presentation, in the case of any somewhat protracted conversation, or in the case of contact upon the same social plane, although at first sight an empty form, is an excellent symbol of that reciprocal apprehension which is the presumption of every social relationship...

Book The Dialectics of Secret Society Power in States

Download or read book The Dialectics of Secret Society Power in States written by Stanton K. Tefft and published by Humanities Press International. This book was released on 1992 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Dialectics of Secret Society Power in States explores a fascinating problem neglected by social science for many years, the political role of secret societies in state systems. Through a comparative study of secret society activity in five states, this book provides a penetrating analysis of the dynamics of state-secret society power relations. The five states and corresponding secret societies presented in this study are: Liberia (Poro and Sande), Ottoman Turks (Bektashi), Ching China ( White Lotus), Malaysia (Triad), and South Africa (Broederbond)." "Unique to this book is the portrayal of secret societies as organizations responsive to the conflicts generated by structural contradictions within state systems and the larger social systems of which states are integral units. Unlike earlier studies of secret orders that provide largely descriptive accounts of secret organizations and their rituals, The Dialectics of Secret Society Power in States clearly identifies the nature of the conflicts in which secret societies are involved and shows how this involvement impacts on the secret order and its power relations with the state." "This study also presents an integrated theoretical assessment of secret societies as both products of, as well as forces for, sociopolitical change. It will be of particular interest to political anthropologists and political sociologists, as well as those studying social and revolutionary movements in Asia and Africa."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Secret Societies Handbook

Download or read book The Secret Societies Handbook written by Michael Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elite secret clubs have always influenced society. First they build power, then they bend others to help them, knowingly or in ignorance, to consolidate and expand their power base. Then they destroy society. Some of them already control the world. When the word "cult" is used, the response is usually the same: dangerous, subversive, anti-family, anti-social. And while this is certainly true, the most daunting discovery in this book is tha the most powerful secret societies are actually running the world, seeking to destroy "morality" and the family unit while publicly appearing to be their biggest champions. Their ultimate weapons are power and time. They have the power; only time will bring their obscure scheme to its inevitable conclusion. This book examines 21 of these elusive and deeply disturbing organizations and reveals in alarming detail how, for five centuries, they have successfully manipulated the global economy, waged wars, and controlled the balance of power to bring about a New World Order.

Politicians, bankers, businessmen, and media personalities - the biggest names in history and world affairs form a huge secret society matrix. This hierarchical pyramid-structured network is constantly recruiting and placing members in key influential positions. Book excerpt: "Adam Parfrey is one of the nation's most provocative publishers."—Seattle Weekly "Secret society historian Craig Heimbichner follows the Middle Path to wisdom. He works the graveyard shift in the secret lodge."—Joan d'Arc, Paranoia magazine Secret societies—now a staple of bestseller novels—are pictured as sinister cults that use hooded albinos to menace truth-seekers. Some conspiracy books claim that fraternal orders are the work of serpentine aliens and interbred humans who wish to supplant earth of its energy, and later, its very existence. On the other side of the aisle, books by high-ranked Freemasons—skeptical in tone but no less partisan in approach—protect their organization's public image by denying the existence of its most contentious ideas. Ritual America reveals the biggest secret of them all: that the influence of fraternal brotherhoods on this country is vast, fundamental, and hidden in plain view. In the early twentieth century, as many as one-third of America belonged to a secret society. And though fezzes and tiny car parades are almost a thing of the past, the Gnostic beliefs of Masonic orders are now so much a part of the American mind that the surrounding pomp and circumstance has become faintly unnecessary. The authors of Ritual America contextualize hundreds of rare and many never-before printed images with entertaining and far-reaching commentary, making an esoteric subject provocative, exciting, and approachable. Adam Parfrey is the author of Cult Rapture: Revelations of the Apocalyptic Mind and It's a Man's World: Men's Adventure Magazines, the Postwar Pulps. He is editor of the influential Apocalypse Culture series Love, Sex, Fear Death: The Inside Story of the Process Church of the Final Judgment. Craig Heimbichner has recently appeared on a National Geographic documentary about the Bohemian Grove, contributed to the Feral House compilation Secret and Suppressed II, and wrote about the famous occult order the O.T.O. in Blood and Altar.

Book How to Start a Secret Society

Download or read book How to Start a Secret Society written by Oliver Wolf and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of secret societies has not only infatuated the wild imagination of children, but of adults as well. The mystique, the thrill that it provides, of being a part of something that no one else knows about, the sense of circumventing the establishment and the 'normal' world around you - who could pass up that kind of rush?!? Every secret society started somewhere - with a group of unknowns who eventually managed famous deeds, or were made famous by the deeds of their successors, which escalated the total brand value of their society. The point is, you don't need to be another George Washington to head your own secret society. Ever heard of John Heath? No? Well, he's the fellow who started the American Greek student system in 1776, because he failed admission into the two existing Latin fraternities at his college. Today, the result is not only a thriving and flourishing system, but it counts as the pinnacle of US collegiate social life for most students, and provides a valuable network of alumni, including ex-Presidents, Senators, Fortune-500 CEOs, and many other notables among its ranks. But beyond their potential future impacts, secret societies are fun! And they're so incredibly easy to start, it's a surprise there aren't hundreds of them. Oh wait, maybe there are? I guess we'll never know, since we can't count them if they're secret. Are you eager to create your own secret society or club? This book has all the information you'll need to get started. The first rule you need to know is: Respect the 'secret' part of secret society, and don't discuss any details with your boyfriend's best friend's uncle's girlfriend's cousin just to show off how clever you are. Now that we've got that out of the way, continue reading and you'll have your secret society up and running in no time!
