Book Key Issues in Education

Download or read book Key Issues in Education written by Keith Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. Throughout the world the same key issues of concern recur in education in different countries. However, education specialists all too often are inward looking and consider problems only in the confines of their own country. This book argues that much is to be gained by taking a broader, more international view as the experiences of other countries can often provide valuable insights on how policies and practice can be improved in one's own country. The book illustrates this argument by examining in detail seven major issues of present concern and comparing how they are handled in different countries.

Book Comparative Sociology of Examinations

Download or read book Comparative Sociology of Examinations written by Fumiya Onaka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary societies are constructed, constricted, and constrained by various series of examinations. Governments of both Western and non-Western countries tend to conduct detailed, multi-layered and continuous systems of tests or examinations. International tests, such as PISA and TIMSS, have also been introduced to compare the relative performances of learners within diverse educational institutions across different countries. Examinations therefore provide a methodological pivot for comparing a range of societies. They enable us to contrast the West and the East; the North and the South; tribal and mass society; ancient and postmodern civilization; and so on. Comparing parallel societies from across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, this book proposes fundamental transitions in sociological research from system to process and from communication to composition through intensive studies on examinations. It uses ethnographies, interviews, questionnaires, documents, statistics, and big-data analyses to make comparisons on broad scales of time and space. In so doing, it suggests hypotheses encompassing different kinds of societies in human history, including those in the Axial Age and the Modern Ages.

Book Dependency and Socialism in the Modern Caribbean

Download or read book Dependency and Socialism in the Modern Caribbean written by Euclid A. Rose and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three small economies that are the subject of this study were established as artificial colonial societies and have remained extremely vulnerable to the international capitalists system, a situation that has led to homegrown efforts to assert methods of development not associated with capitalism. After placing the developmental realities of the three countries in the general context of the Caribbean region and the global capitalist system, Rose (Siena College) critically examines the attempts of the three countries' experiments with socialism, begun in the 1970s. She reserves greater criticism for the United States as she turns her attention to U.S. government efforts to destabilize the countries in an effort to prevent the emerging of any socialist alternatives in an area it viewed as part of its sphere of influence.
