Book excerpt: Grazing by wild and domestic mammals can have small to large effects on plant communities, depending on characteristics of the particular community and of the type and intensity of grazing. The broad objective of this report was to extensively review literature on the effects of grazing on 25 plant communities of the southwestern U.S. in terms of plant species composition, aboveground primary productivity, and root and soil attributes. Livestock grazing management and grazing systems are assessed, as are effects of small and large native mammals and feral species, when data are available. Emphasis is placed on the evolutionary history of grazing and productivity of the particular communities as determinants of response. After reviewing available studies for each community type, we compare changes in species composition with grazing among community types. Comparisons are also made between southwestern communities with a relatively short history of grazing and communities of the adjacent Great Plains with a long evolutionary history of grazing. Evidence for grazing as a factor in shifts from grasslands to shrublands is considered. An appendix outlines a new community classification system, which is followed in describing grazing impacts in prior sections.

Book excerpt: Communities are structured by many factors including abiotic factors such as resource availability, and biotic interactions. Climatic and atmospheric change will affect the composition of plant communities through multiple interacting biotic and abiotic factors. Literature on the effects of single factors on plant communities is abundant yet there have been few experiments examining the effects of multiple abiotic factors associated with climate change. Moreover, plant communities are not controlled solely by environmental conditions, but by biotic interactions such as competition and facilitation. In this thesis, I used a field experiment to examine the effects of elevated [CO2], warming, and soil moisture on in-situ old-field plant communities (Chapter 2). In addition, I conducted a separate field experiment to examine the competitive relationships among the constituent species to test whether an experimentally derived competitive hierarchy can predict relative abundances of species within plant communities (Chapter 3). I examined plant community responses to treatments of elevated [CO2] (+300 ppm), warming (+3 degrees C), and soil moisture availability applied to experimental plots within open-top chambers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 2002, we constructed plots with plant communities consisting of seven common old-field species, including grasses, forbs, and legumes. Beginning in 2003, we tracked foliar cover, density and recruitment, and reproductive phenology for each plant species, and determined changes in community diversity and evenness over the course of two growing seasons. We observed few interactive effects of treatments on plant abundance. Most of the observed plant responses to treatments were responses to single factors. Species-specific foliar cover was most strongly influenced by warming: warming reduced foliar cover of Trifolium pratense and Dactylis glomerata, but increased foliar cover of Andropogon virginicus and Solidgao canadensis. Foliar cover of Dactylis glomerata was lower in dry plots than in wet plots. During the second full growing season, plant species diversity, evenness, and richness were at least 10% lower in wet plots, where total foliar cover and dominance were greater than in dry plots. Interactive effects of treatments appeared only toward the end of the second growing season. For example, late in the growing season of 2004, cover of Dactylis was four times greater within wet plots under ambient temperatures than in all other treatment combinations (temperature x water interaction; P less than 0.02).

Book excerpt: Aquatic plants refer to a diverse group of aquatic photosynthetic organisms large enough to be seem with the naked eye, and the vegetative parts of which actively grow either permanently or periodically (for at least several weeks each year) submerged below, floating on, or growing up through the water surface. These include aquatic vascular plants, aquatic mosses and some larger algae. Aquatic plants are grouped into life forms, each of which relates differently to limiting factors and has distinct ecological functions in aquatic ecosystems. Life form groups include emergent macrophytes (plants that are rooted in sediment or soils that are periodically inundated, with all other structures extending into the air), floating-leaved macrophytes (rooted plants with leaves that float on the water surface), submersed macrophytes (rooted plants growing completely submerged), free submerged macrophytes (which are not rooted but attached to other macrophytes or submerged structures) and free-floating macrophytes (plants that float on the water surface). Aquatic plants play an important role in the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems by altering water movement regimes, providing shelter and refuge and serving as a food source. In addition, aquatic plants produce large standing crops which can also stabilize sediments, accumulate large amounts of nutrients thus improving water healthy. Thus, because of their ecological role, aquatic plants are an important component of aquatic ecosystems. Aquatic plants are very vulnerable to human activities and global changes, and many species of the plants had become endangered in the past several decades due to habitat loss, flooding, damming, over foraging, biological invasion and eutrophication, which might not be halted but enforced in the future when more extreme weathers coincide with enhanced human activities.

Book excerpt: Understanding the forces that govern plant community structure, function, and response to change is a central question in ecology. Theory predicts that plant communities assemble as a result of a species ability to disperse, tolerate the environment, and interact with other organisms. Recently, there has been a strong focus on predicting the success of species within communities based on their ability to disperse, tolerate stress, successfully compete, and survive as measured by their phenotypic and functional characteristics, or "traits". In an era of global change, trait-based ecology offers the promise of predicting community responses without studying each species individually. The aim of my dissertation is to understand how plant traits mediate species responses to climate change, species introductions, disturbance regimes, and habitat loss and fragmentation. My first chapter describes how functional traits of native and non-native plants differ and how environmental gradients affect these differences. Theory predicts that differences in species should affect the extent to which native and non-native species compete and fill different niches, both of which can be mechanisms of invasion. I considered both intra- and interspecific variation in traits across a strong natural environmental climate gradient in Hawaii. Non-native species have different characteristics than native species overall, but these differences are minimized in cool, wet conditions. This suggests that native and non-native species compete more strongly in cool, wet conditions and that invaders in hot, dry conditions are filling different niches. My second chapter asks how ontogeny affects commonly measured plant functional traits. Using a greenhouse experiment with eight common prairie perennial plants, I measured traits every two weeks throughout the growing season to investigate how much within-species variation in phenotype is due to age alone. My findings demonstrate that plant traits do change through time with the fastest changes occurring in younger plants. As plants age, they generally shift from acquisitive resource-use strategies to conservative resource-use strategies, however, faster-growing species change more than slower-growing species. Since most trait-based studies rely on functional traits measured from adult plants, my results suggest that it may be important to also incorporate traits of younger individuals, especially when evaluating assembling communities. My third chapter investigates plant strategies for early spring survival and growth following disturbance by fire in tallgrass prairie. I measured cold tolerance and specific leaf area (leaf carbon content) as metrics of stress tolerance and leaf area as a metric of growth to determine how plant strategies change through time and whether there are tradeoffs between growth and tolerance. Disturbance timing affects tolerance traits such that fall burns promote more tolerant leaves early in the spring while spring burns promote more tolerant leaves late in the season. There is weak evidence for a tradeoff where increased tolerance results in a reduction in growth. Overall, these results suggest that plants exhibit strategies for spring survival and growth that vary from cold avoidance with rapid growth to cold tolerance with slower growth. My fourth chapter explores how disturbance and winter climate change interact to affect prairie plant growth, phenology, and community composition. I established a three-year field experiment that manipulates fire timing and winter snow depth in restored prairies. Plots that have reduced snow and that are burned in the fall have substantially colder winter soil temperatures and thaw earlier in spring. The disturbance treatments change the magnitude and direction of response to snow depth treatments for most species and have species-specific effects on plant growth and phenology. These results provide clear evidence that disturbance regimes can set the stage for climate change responses in grassland plant communities.
