Sub question: How does sorting long vowel sounds help students to recognize and decode words that they find in context? How will making vowel books help students to gain strategies to encode words they use in writing? Research activities: During a thirteen day research intervention, students used word sorts, decodable books, as well as spelling games as practice to learn the long /a/ and long /e/ vowel spelling patterns. The students were involved in direct instruction, independent work, and partner phonics activities. The focus of my intervention was on reading and writing words that have long vowel spelling patterns. Context: This study took place in a self-contained 2nd grade class. Ten students were instructed with three focus students, which included two English language learners, one whose primary language was Spanish, the other Farsi. The third student was an English only speaker. Methods and Data: During the thirteen-day intervention, direct instruction on phonics long vowel sounds was used. The students practiced the long vowel spelling patterns through words sorts, word hunts, and creating vowel notebooks. The data sets included achievement data from the Basic Skills and Phonics Test and spelling tests, and attitudinal surveys. Results: The students showed improvement after the intervention activities, specifically on the weekly spelling test. Students became more confident spellers as they were taught spelling patterns to understand how words with long vowels are decoded and encoded. Conclusion: By knowing long vowel spelling patterns, students were able to encode and decode words that were familiar in context and out of context, as well as words that were unfamiliar. The direct teaching of long vowel spelling patterns helped students gain tools that helped them become more proficient readers and capable writers. Context-Grade level: 2nd grade. Data Collection Method: Observation-student, Observation-Teacher research journal, Phonics assessment, Reading assessment, Survey-Attitude, Spelling assessment. Curriculum areas: English Language Arts, English Language Development, Reading, Writing-Spelling. Instructional Approaches: Collaboration/Teaming, Direct Instruction, Homework Phonemic awareness, Reading-Decoding/word recognition, Spelling strategies, Student engagement.
