Book Elementary French

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary French: The Essentials of French Grammar With Exercises This text-book for beginners is an outgrowth of Foundations of Franck. When a revision of this was first undertaken, the purpose was to adapt it to a wider range of use by the insertion of a greater variety of exercises and the addition of vocabularies. So many incidental alterations and additions have attended the work that an entirely new book has resulted. However, the logical arrangement of topics, and the clearness and simplicity of statement that characterized the earlier volume, are every where retained. At the present time the ideas of American teachers are begin ning to be fairly in accord touching the content of the elementary course in French. To meet the demands of this course is the aim of this book, as its title indicates, and it seeks to accomplish little more. It does endeavor, nevertheless, by the character and quantity of material presented, to secure sufficient flexibility to meet, as fully as may be, the diverse conditions that the American educational system presents. Such variations appear in the time allowed by the curriculum, the maturity of the class, the imme diate aim of the work, and the method of the teacher. The exer cises will readily lend themselves to the molding hand of. The instructor who strives to impart a practical command of the living language. The book is equally well adapted to serve in a second ary school and to constitute the nucleus of the first year's work in a college course that does not demand French for entrance. It can be completed in a year and leave ample time for the reading of easy French texts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar: Followed by a Manual of PronunciationThe object of this book is to provide the student with a brief exposition of the principles of French grammar. We present to the public neither a new system nor, strictly speaking, a new grammar, but the result of an experience of many years in teaching the French language. The first part, Etymology, is given in English, in order to afford the pupil time to acquire a vocabulary large enough to render future study of the language useful and attractive. While studying this part, he is supposed to read some French selections; and for this purpose we have compiled a French Reader, beginning with the easiest compositions and proceed ing by degrees to the most difficult; The student is supposed not only to read and translate these, but also, as far as possible, to commit them to memory. This will enable him to pass with advantage to the second part, Syntax. This part is given in French, in order to compel the pupil to make use of his acquired vocabulary, and help him to converse in French.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Advanced Course of Object Lessons in French Book III Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advanced Course of Object Lessons in French Book III Classic Reprint written by Alec Cran and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Course Of Object Lessons In French (Book III) Thls little volume completes the series of three books of object lessons and picture lessons in French. Books I. And II. Contain, in addition, elementary grammar lessons and exercises for translation into French. These two books, along with a suitable reader, form a graded course for acquiring some facility in speaking the language, under standing it when spoken, reading it, and writing it. The present volume is intended more especially for those de sirous of developing the practical accomplishment of speak ing the language. At this stage the learner is supposed to study his grammar, composition, and reading from separate books, these being now of a nature too complex to be in cluded in one volume. The art of speaking a language can, we think, be best acquired by practice in imitation of good models provided for the learner. The method, which is the same as in Books I. And II., aims at leading the student to associate the new vocabulary directly with objects instead of with their English names. The phraseology of everyday life forms the basis of all language. We have, therefore, included as many as possible of the most familiar words and expressions, and we have tried to base the lessons on subjects which we hope may be found both useful and interesting. Book French by Reading

Download or read book French by Reading written by Louise Seymour Houghton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French by Reading: A Progressive French Method Tim one point to be kept ever in view, in teaching French by this method, is to make the study easy. The pupil's mind should never be needlessly diverted from the main purpose, that of thinking in French, by any avoidable perplexity, either as to the meaning of a phrase or as to the grammatical principles which govern it. The vocabulary which is to give form to the thought is always the first consideration, and it is to be attained by the easiest and most rapid means possible. The grammatical rules are in every case to explain the form, never to precede it. In the case of very young pupils, therefore, it is desirable that even the notes explanatory of the lesson should be given by the teacher orally, rather than read by the pupil. In no case are they intended to be learned. The grammatical rules, on the contrary, are to be learned, and learned perfectly; but not until the reading lesson has been gone over at least once, - in the case of young children, twice. The method of study should, therefore, be as follows. First, the reading of the text of the lesson, with the interlinear translation, as far as it exists; after that, the text is to be read in class, without prep aration, the teacher supplying the English meaning of all new words. The second lesson should consist of the same text, prepared before hand by the aid of the Vocabulary at the end of the book (which contains only those translations of the word required by the book), and of the grammatical references, if needed. The third lesson should consist of the large type of the grammar lesson, thoroughly committed to memory, and a third reading of the text, at sight. In a class of older children, after the first nine lessons, two repetitions of the text should be sufficient, the grammar study accompanying the second repetition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syntax of the French Verb In using the book in class, some teachers will desire to assign for study only the most important material, reserving the remainder for reading and reference. To facilitate this, two sizes of type are employed. Attention is directed to the fact that this is the sole method used to indicate the importance of the material. The paragraphs introduced by letters are to be considered as equal in importance to those intro duced by numbers, unless they are set in the smaller size of type. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the French Language, With Practical Exercises In this edition the errors in the former publications are carefully corrected, the several expressions which did not so well please in the course of practice, have been altered, and every improvement added, that could tend to facilitate the attainment of the French language. It having been suggested, by some gentlemen, to whose judgment the Author pays the greatest deference, that the irregular verbs, being arranged in alphabetical order, in the body of the book, would be a considerable improvement to the work, and facilitate the progress of the scholar, this is done in the present edition. The primitives of the irregular verbs are conjugated at length, and at the end of each are given their several compounds, with large exercises, both upon the primitives and compounds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar, for Schools and Colleges: Together With a Brief Reader and English Exercises Having regard to the importance of securing accurate pronunciation from the very outset. Care has been taken to facilitate the work of the teacher in this respect by giving a phonetic transcription of all vocabularies and paradigms, under the conviction that in no other way can distinctions in sounds be intelligibly explained. In order, however, not to confuse the beginner with too minute distinctions, half long vowels have not been indicated, and the same rule has been observed, for the most part, with regard to such stressed vowels as are Optionally long or short. The elementary exercises are based almost exclusively upon connected pieces of French, dealing with a variety of topics relating to every-day life, and make provision for both oral and written practice. They have been provided in abundance so as to admit of selection and variety, and to afford ample material for review. In both the elemen tary and advanced exercises, regard has been had to the requirements of such teachers as feel the necessity for a large amount of work of this kind in order to ensure ade quate and practical knowledge on, the part of the pupil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Le Beau Pays De France In order to attain this end material has been drawn from sections that give as much variety of type as possible. The chapters are not limited to any one phase of French life or any one locality. There are descriptions of provinces and of folk customs, tales of the troubadours, historic tales, legends, and narratives of events in the late war. An attempt has been made to give in short sketches the salient differences between la Bretagne, la Provence, la Normandie, and la Touraine, and again between these provinces and Paris, the capital; to familiarize the reader with some of the heroic tales that have inspired French childhood; to let him feel some of the atmosphere of the past; to acquaint him with the rugged strength, the simplicity, and the serious capacity for hard work which have produced such heroes as Joffre and Foch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum French Grammar and Reader: With Exercises and Graded Selections for Reading and Dictation, and Review Exercises for Translation Into French Another feature, which the author hopes will be regarded as valuable, is the insistence, in the Selec tions and in the Vocabularies, upon the resemblances and differences in the French and English forms of kindred words. If this point is stressed by the teacher, the student soon masters the habitual rela tions of form, and lays a good foundation also for future studies in etymology. The Pronunciation is placed, where it belongs, at the beginning, but with due help may be better studied along with the earliest grammar lessons than in a body beforehand. The directions given are in tended to be simply helpful and approximate: only voice can teach voice. N o attempt, however, is made at phonetic transliteration, because none is believed to be helpful in elementary work.
