Book Second Chance

Book excerpt: It was becoming increasingly clear in spring 1988 that the ten-year old war in Cambodia was approaching a turning point. For a variety of reasons, mostly domestic, Vietnam was under pressure to withdraw its forces from the region and had, in fact, pledged to do so by 1990/ However, in order to gain the benefits it sought from the international community, it was evident that Hanoi would need to go beyond merely ending its decade-long occupations and contribute to a political settlement satisfactory to all of the principal Cambodia and outside players. Similarly, Cambodia loomed as the main obstacle to achieving Soviet Party General Secretary Gorbachevs objective of normalizing relations with China. Thus, not only did Moscow encourage a negotiated settlement, but even on what was likely to the Kremlin was willing to see the brutal Khmer Rouge included in an interim structure in order to satisfy China that Beijings interest were being protected. The six member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the principal backers of the noncommunist resistance were actively promoting a peaceful resolution, with certain differences and tensions among them. And, through it remained a second-order issue for the United State, it was obvious that Washington would have to reengage in Indochina, if not despite, their previous role their.

Book Brazil s Second Chance

Download or read book Brazil s Second Chance written by Lincoln Gordon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil is currently in a critical phase of a decades-long transformation from a patrimonial society--based on the cultivation and export of sugar and coffee--to a modernized industrial and service economy with effective democratic governance. It is the world's fifth largest nation-state in area and population, and ranks eighth in total economic output. Since World War II, Brazil has been a leader in international trade governance and negotiation, playing an important part in development of the GATT and the WTO. Currently, the country is a major factor in negotiations toward a hemispherewide Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). However, Brazil's political record in the past half century has been erratic and it has struggled with high inflation and balance-of-payment deficits. In this major new work, a former American ambassador to Brazil examines the social, political, and economic history of the country since the 1930s and discusses whether Brazil is now ready to assume a place as an important participant among First World nations.

Download or read book Prophecy Lughnasadh Elite Academy 1 written by Layla Heart and published by Easily Distracted Media. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One clueless queen-to-be, four princes to change her world forever. Before her vital first cup of coffee in the morning, Litha finds out she’s a witch and is suddenly transported to a magical world she didn’t know existed. As if that wasn’t strange enough, it turns out that she’s prophesied to be queen and her parents only took her to the human world to protect her from those who want her dead. But now she’s at Lughnasadh Elite Academy and face to face with her four potential… kings? It doesn’t help that all four princes are sexy and hot and make her insides squirm when she catches sight of them. There is Bane, the werewolf prince, all broody and with hair sticking up like he just got out of bed. Kit, the incubus prince, whose wicked smile melts anyone’s unmentionables. Rune, the dragon prince, protective and with muscles like he’s a moving mountain. And last, but definitely not least, Finn, the fae prince, quiet but intense, with eyes like a summer forest. According to the prophecy, Litha will marry the true ruler of the four kingdoms. But having grown up human, in the human world, she has no idea where to start making sense of all of it, and the four princes pursuing her really don’t help with trying to figure it all out. This is the first novella in the Lughnasadh Elite Academy serial, a reverse harem #WhyChoose story. This novella may include any of these elements: steamy scenes, ‘I need tissues NOW’ moments, cries of ‘why, oh, why’ and cliffhangers that make you bite your nails (and curse the author). This story includes MF, MM and also FF scenes, but everyone is primarily focused on Litha and there are no sexy scenes between the guys and the other girl.

Book Fated Lovers Lughnasadh Elite Academy Collection 1

Download or read book Fated Lovers Lughnasadh Elite Academy Collection 1 written by Layla Heart and published by Easily Distracted Media. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One clueless queen-to-be, sent to a magical world she didn’t know existed, five lovers waiting for her prophesied arrival. Before her vital first cup of coffee in the morning, Litha finds out she’s a witch and is suddenly transported to a magical world she had no idea existed. As if that wasn’t strange enough, it turns out that she’s prophesied to be queen, and her parents only took her to the human world to protect her from those who want to stop the prophecy from happening. The prophecy tells of a queen who will marry the ‘true king’ to unite all four kingdoms under his rule, finally bringing peace for the first time in centuries. The four princes who could become her king? They’re all hot as hell and make her insides squirm each time she sees them. There’s Bane, the werewolf prince, all broody and with hair sticking up like he just got out of bed. Kit, the incubus prince, whose wicked smile melts anyone’s unmentionables. Rune, the dragon prince, protective and with muscles like he’s a moving mountain. And last, but definitely not least, Finn, the fae prince, quiet but intense, with eyes like a summer forest. And to make things even more complicated, when Litha finally meets her roommate, Phoenix, the only daughter of the highest priestess of the witches, she doesn’t want to do anything but kiss the redhead silly. The first day at the Academy is a little bumpy, as Litha feels so lost in this new world, but that pales in comparison to finding out her parents had to go into hiding, the documents of the prophecy having been stolen from the Academy just days before and that some of the princes have been keeping secrets which could be their undoing before anything even starts… This is a collection of the first set of three novellas, Prophecy, Curiosity and Duality in the Lughnasadh Elite Academy serial, a reverse harem #WhyChoose story. These novellas may include any of the following elements: steamy scenes, ‘I need tissues NOW’ moments, cries of ‘why, oh, why’ and cliffhangers that make you bite your nails (and curse the author). This story includes MF, MM and also FF scenes, but everyone is primarily focused on Litha and there are no sexy scenes between the guys and the other girl.

Book Drawing the Past Volume 1

Download or read book Drawing the Past Volume 1 written by Dorian L. Alexander and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Lawrence Abrams, Dorian L. Alexander, Max Bledstein, Peter Cullen Bryan, Stephen Connor, Matthew J. Costello, Martin Flanagan, Michael Fuchs, Michael Goodrum, Bridget Keown, Kaleb Knoblach, Christina M. Knopf, Martin Lund, Jordan Newton, Stefan Rabitsch, Maryanne Rhett, and Philip Smith History has always been a matter of arranging evidence into a narrative, but the public debate over the meanings we attach to a given history can seem particularly acute in our current age. Like all artistic mediums, comics possess the power to mold history into shapes that serve its prospective audience and creator both. It makes sense, then, that history, no stranger to the creation of hagiographies, particularly in the service of nationalism and other political ideologies, is so easily summoned to the panelled page. Comics, like statues, museums, and other vehicles for historical narrative, make both monsters and heroes of men while fueling combative beliefs in personal versions of United States history. Drawing the Past, Volume 1: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the United States, the first book in a two-volume series, provides a map of current approaches to comics and their engagement with historical representation. The first section of the book on history and form explores the existence, shape, and influence of comics as a medium. The second section concerns the question of trauma, understood both as individual traumas that can shape the relationship between the narrator and object, and historical traumas that invite a reassessment of existing social, economic, and cultural assumptions. The final section on mythic histories delves into ways in which comics add to the mythology of the US. Together, both volumes bring together a range of different approaches to diverse material and feature remarkable scholars from all over the world.

Book The Best Laid Plans

Download or read book The Best Laid Plans written by Stewart Patrick and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-12-12 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-standing, but unresolved debate of the virtues and values of multilateralism vs. unilateralism in American foreign policy is critically important in today's complicated world. To understand the history of each approach is to understand their opportunities and challenges for the future. The Best Laid Plans answers two central questions. First, why did the United States embrace the principles and practices of liberal multilateralism during World War II? Second, why did it cling to this vision of world order despite the outbreak of the Cold War in the late 1940s, as the 'One World' that had been anticipated by U.S. postwar planners split into two rival global camps? The book contends that neither the U.S. turn to liberal multilateralism nor the persistence of this orientation during the Cold War can be attributed solely or even primarily to the global power structure or crude considerations of material self interest. Rather, Stewart Patrick argues that a combination of enduring identity commitments and new ideas, based on the lessons of recent, cataclysmic events, shaped the policy preferences of American central decision-makers in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. Although the book is steeped in history, its conclusions have tremendous relevance for the contemporary era, when the United States once again finds itself at the apex of world power, and debates are rife about the role of multilateral cooperation in the realization of U.S. foreign policy objectives.

Book A Bourdieusian Analysis of 64 Students Pursuing a Second Chance in a Community College in Hong Kong

Download or read book A Bourdieusian Analysis of 64 Students Pursuing a Second Chance in a Community College in Hong Kong written by Yi-Lee Wong and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous expansion of higher education has made it possible not only for more students to get straight into university, but also for more students to obtain a university place at their second attempt immediately after their first attempt fails. However, the educational experiences of students who seek such a second chance have been under-examined. In filling this empirical gap, this book offers an application of Bourdieu’s analysis of class reproduction through education (together with his three concepts of habitus, cultural capital, and field, and the concept of emotional capital derived from an extension of his framework) to make sense of educational experiences of 64 community-college students who seek such a second chance in Hong Kong. The option of community college as a second chance became available in Hong Kong in the year 2000. The book explores how specific characteristics of community college in Hong Kong impact on the ways in which respondents of the middle and working classes see and feel about their selves throughout the course of pursuing this second chance. It also revisits Bourdieu’s framework and suggests the possibility of theorising an observed class contrast in orientation to making sense of (academic) challenges posed in educational contexts as a form of classed habitus of middle-class situational interpretation as opposed to working-class direct understanding.
