Download or read book Phoenix Rising written by Hwei-Fe'n Cheah and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Nyonya beadwork as both a lens and an object of study, Hwei-Fe'n Cheah explores historical, social and cultural transformations in the Peranakan Chinese community. Phoenix Rising provides social scientists with tangible tools for examining concepts of modernity and tradition. For gender theorists, Phoenix Rising exemplifies the way time was used for beadwork and embroidery, thus crafting notions of Nyonya culture and identity. The reader is simultaneously taken on two journeys, the one pictorial, the other analytic, to learn about the changing ways in which meaning intersects with items of material culture---historically and currently. The combination is a visually and intellectually exciting example of multi-disciplinary research that is also aesthetically stunning. Barbara Leigh Adjunct Professor, University of Technology Sydney --
Download or read book The Secrets of God written by AQ Sid and published by Leadstart Publishing Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 1901 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secrets of God is a book of his research and a collection of notes. He started this research in an early age borrowing books from British and American Libraries in Mumbai. Much of his work is based on divine scriptures. Quoting verses from Old Testament, Bible, Quran and Vedas, with striking resemblance he is revealing the unknown Secrets of God. The resemblance of verses from divine religions has been discussed by many scholars. Here, in this book Sid tries at ‘reasoning’. And this reasoning develops striking secrets of God. There are new subjects related to the Supreme God which are not discussed by scholars so far. AQ Sid is treading on this unknown Terrans. A chapter in this book, “Why Messengers were sent to mankind and what were the reasons behind the miracles of Messengers” has a very strong reasoning. The facts and reasons behind miracles of Messngers are truly revealing a ‘secret of God’. Another chapter, ‘Age, Fate and destiny’ is also linking these most talked about subjects to a secret of God. There are no exhaustive lecturing or discussions in any chapter. All chapters are concise and well supported by valid reasoning in an interesting narration. The book also justifies why there are different faiths while the Creator is only One. This chapter will give enough food for thought for any inter faith event.

Download or read book Reconstructing Identities written by Jürgen Rudolph and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this text is to provide a social history of the Babas in Singapore. It describes and analyzes social, political and cultural aspects of their identities by taking into account the conceptual history of Baba designations from 1819-1994. It argues that defining the Babas is misleading, it is more meaningful to adopt a socio-historical approach that differentiates spaciotemporally-distinct Baba identities. Such an approach is usually avoided not only in research on the Babas, but in many other sociological, anthropological or historical studies. It concludes that there is no such thing as a Baba identity, it has always been in flux and needs to be reconstructed taking seriously the conceptual history. The two crucial turning-points in the history of the Babas, namely the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) and self-rule (1959) led to public emphasis on their culture. Prior emphasis on their former status as a political and economic elite have been hitherto neglected. Taking into account all aspects (legal, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious) of Baba identities leads us to a fascinating trajectory of a potential group.
