Book Grass Productivity An Introduction to Rational Grazing

Download or read book Grass Productivity An Introduction to Rational Grazing written by Dr. Robert C. Worstell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SIMPLE questions often help us to understand problems better; and I think it indispensable, at the beginning of this work, to ask a question which appears simple in the extreme: "What is grazing?" The answer is generally as follows: "Causing grass to be eaten by an animal." That is correct! But here is another answer which, to my mind, is more realistic: "Causing the grass and the animal to meet." Since this book is almost exclusively concerned with grazing by cattle, I propose the following definition to the reader, requesting him to allow it to become well impressed upon his mind: Grazing is the meeting of cow and grass. It is by satisfying as far as possible the demands of both parties that we will arrive at a rational grazing, which will provide us with maximum productivity on the part of the grass while at the same time allowing the cow to give optimum performance. Book Feeding Strategies for Grazing Organic Dairy Cows and the Impact on Milk Production

Download or read book Feeding Strategies for Grazing Organic Dairy Cows and the Impact on Milk Production written by Ariel Ayers and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic dairy producers rely on pasture-based diets during the grazing season to provide their lactating herd with the nutrients to support lactation. This can present challenges for producers in the Northeast US, as pasture nutrients can vary with season and weather, ultimately impacting milk productivity and animal health. There is currently limited literature outlining feeding guidelines for producers to meet dairy cattle nutrient requirements on pasture-based systems. This thesis outlines an investigation of the nutritional strategies that are utilized on organic dairy farms in Vermont, as well as a case study utilizing a modified supplement to identify the implications of this modified supplement profile on animal health and productivity during the grazing season. The first objective (Chapter 2) was to survey nutritional management strategies commonly used on organic operations in the Northeast, and evaluate the impact on animal health and productivity. Sixteen Vermont organic dairy farms were evaluated during the grazing season of 2017 and data collected included management, animal, and pasture data. Farms were assessed at three timepoints throughout the grazing season, including once in the spring, summer, and fall. Farms were later divided into two groups based on their measured milk production for subsequent comparison: 1) high milk group (HMG, n=8) or 2) low milk group (LMG, n=8). Non-forage supplementation for the HMG ranged from 4.78-7.03 kg DM per animal and the LMG ranged from grass-only to 7.93 kg DM per animal. Protein and fat yield were greater in the HMG compared to the LMG. Protein yield decreased from spring to summer, and remained similar from summer to fall. The rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) concentration in pasture followed a similar trend as the protein yield observed in both HMG and LMG. The second objective (Chapter 3) was to utilize a modified supplement on commercial organic dairy farms during the grazing season to determine whether dietary protein limitations were the primary factor limiting milk production on organic dairies in Vermont during the grazing season. Six Vermont organic dairy farms participated in a 6-week trial consisting of a 2-week baseline period and 4-week experimental period, with management, animal, and pasture data collected throughout the 6-week trial. Farms were paired by their 2017 summer milk urea nitrogen (MUN) profile, and farms within each pair were assigned to 1) continuation of their regular supplements (n=3, control group, CON), or 2) supplement targeted to 16% crude protein (CP, as % of dry matter) formulated using an organic barley and roasted soybean mix (n=3, treatment group, TRT). The modified supplement CP (% DM) averaged 14.8% for CON and 19.4% for TRT during the experimental period. Milk production was higher during the experimental period for TRT vs. CON. Milk composition was different between groups, with fat and protein percent being higher in the CON group compared to the TRT for the 6 weeks. During the experimental period TRT had higher MUN concentrations compared to CON. This research outlines nutritional strategies used on organic dairy farms in Vermont and identifies some potential nutritional drivers impacting milk production and composition. These results also indicate that altering the CP content of dietary supplements fed to grazing organic dairy cattle during the summer period in the US Northeast could be a useful mechanism to maintain milk production. Further research could be done to investigate the economic variables for these feeding strategies.

Book Feeding Concentrates

Download or read book Feeding Concentrates written by Roy Kellaway and published by Landlinks Press. This book was released on 2004-02-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents strategies for feeding energy and protein supplements to pasture-fed dairy cows and examines the potential economic benefits. Effective supplementary feeding of concentrates is critical to the success of all dairy farms. This book is a substantially revised edition of 'Feeding Concentrates: Supplements for Dairy Cows' DRDC 1993. It focuses on feeding concentrates to pasture fed cows to achieve high milk production per cow per hectare, and will assist farmers to decide which supplements give the best results in their particular situation. The benefits that arise from supplementary feeding include higher stocking rates, promotion of growth in heifers and young cows; better body condition score and increased lactation length when pasture is less available; improved pasture use; reduced cost per tonne of pasture eaten; flexibility to increase milk production when milk prices are high; and increased milk protein content when the energy content in pasture is low. This edition has thoroughly reviewed the issues and clearly documents the results of research particularly for grains supplementation. The summaries and recommendations in each chapter will be particularly helpful to dairy farmers in making best management decisions relating to concentrate feeding.

Book Automatic Milking and Grazing

Download or read book Automatic Milking and Grazing written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When automatic milking is combined with grazing the cows are given a unique opportunity to choose between being indoors or outdoors. Concerns have been raised about achieving sufficient number of milkings per day since the cows' motivation to be milked is low and cows are expected to go to milking voluntarily. The overall aim was therefore to examine how management routines affect cow motivation to visit the milking unit several times a day. First it was hypothesised that distance to pasture and level of supplements affects the milking frequency. The results demonstrated that cows with a shorter distance to pasture had a higher milking frequency during the first part of the grazing season and a higher milk yield compared with cows pasturing further from the barn. One important finding was that cows on the distant pasture changed their behaviour as the grazing season progressed and almost ceased to walk to their pasture area. A high level of silage supplements compared with a buffer feed offered in the barn had no affect on the milk yield. Also there was no affect on the number of milkings during the first part of the grazing season but during the latter part, cows with a high level of silage had a lower number of milkings. It was also hypothesized that it is possible to strengthen the cows' perception of a feed reward in the milking unit by training the cow to respond to a conditioned stimulus, an acoustic signal. Most of the cows learnt to approach the milking unit following the signal when they were in an enclosed area of the barn, close to the milking unit. However, when receiving the signal out on pasture the response to the signal was variable and comparatively low. Finally, the hypothesis that enhanced sensory stimulation during milking by feeding or stroking the cows' abdomen affects the level of the oxytocin and cortisol during milking was tested. Feeding during milking increased the plasma oxytocin level and milk production whereas brushing during milking d
