Book excerpt: Food - what we eat, how much we eat, how it is produced and prepared, and its cultural and ecological significance- is an increasingly significant topic not only for scholars but for all of us. Theology on the Menu is the first systematic and historical assessment of Christian attitudes to food and its role in shaping Christian identity. David Grumett and Rachel Muers unfold a fascinating history of feasting and fasting, food regulations and resistance to regulation, the symbolism attached to particular foods, the relationship between diet and doctrine, and how food has shaped inter-religious encounters. Everyone interested in Christian approaches to food and diet or seeking to understand how theology can engage fruitfully with everyday life will find this book a stimulus and an inspiration.

Book Medieval English Benedictine Liturgy

Download or read book Medieval English Benedictine Liturgy written by Sally Elizabeth (Roper) Harper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Medieval English Benedictine Liturgy is a detailed study of the liturgical use of medieval monasteries in England, spanning 500 years. The study examines the major votive observances that came to fruition in the twelfth century and later and argues that these important practices affected earlier monastic observances. The book’s emphasis on Anglo-Saxon liturgy provides a bridge between the practices of the English Benedictines before and after the Conquest. The book also traces the chronological progress of three individual observances and extends where possible into the sixteenth century. The book argues that, at a broader level, while liturgy has been recognized as an indispensable part of the study of the context and use of medieval chant and polyphony.

Book Holy Women Holy Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : Church Publishing,
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0898696372
  • Pages : 798 pages

Download or read book Holy Women Holy Men written by Church Publishing, and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antagonist of this series is barely mentioned in this book. His name is Chronotix Zeit Genrai Denbora and carries in distinction, one vertical eye. His murderers thought that it might be a tad rude that this great majister lacks a bigger part, and so convinced me to honor him with some cover time. As art is not my forte, this on the left is the best that I managed to do. Yes, they had killed him, the three of them. The magnate billionaire, the time traveler and the Chief Commisioner of the Interplanetary Alliance. Before they are able to come to terms with what has transpired, they are kidnapped by an alien race known only as the Ziggonians. They board the alien spacecraft and soar through the endless vastness of space in order to face trial for their crimes at the tribunal of the galaxies of souls. Tasked with their defense, the Eye of Chimera using the Mindmeld 3000, digs through and spins awake their everlong memories. Beginning in a world before this one, a yesterworld lightweight and airy, with only a fraction of Earths present day gravity. Where giants and dinosaurs still roam freely throughout the lands. The seven realms vie for dominance in a world where all is decided by way of combat. And anyone knows that any combateer worth their mettle has traveled at least one heavy air to completion at one of the rims of the world. Another spring equinox approaches and with it the chance to win the combat rights to chase the heavy air.

Book The Mythology Of Scripture

Download or read book The Mythology Of Scripture written by Robert D. Onsted and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churches throughout the world’s developed nations are losing members in droves. As a result, parishes are downsizing or consolidating to remain intact-- in many cases to just survive. There must be a reason, and this author opines that antiquated Church doctrines are no longer relevant to 21st century minds. If religions are to remain viable entities in our rapidly accelerating world, they must be willing to re-examine their outdated doctrinal systems to better resonate with an educated populace. Primitive man created his gods and goddesses—and fi nally “God”-- in his own image, believing that these entities manipulated the forces of nature that were beyond his own ability to control. In doing so, he imbued his divine creations with his own best—and worst—attributes because they were what he witnessed around, and about, himself. His gods, like their mythological counterparts, were often powerful, tyrannical and self-aggrandizing beings, demanding praise, worship and blood sacrifi ce; gods who would wrathfully smite those who would not bow down in worship to them. But that was then, and this is now. Instead of rigid religious rules and antiquated beliefs, our psyches crave an inner directed experience of the Divine from which we can derive a sense of value, purpose and meaning for the lives we live. This book hopes to sound a wake-up call to the world’s major religions before they fi nd themselves placed on dusty library shelves, among other “quaint and curious volumes of forgotten lore.” i Unless this reconstruction can happen, religion, as it has existed for millennia, cannot help but wither and die.
