Book Crime Victimization and Police Contact

Download or read book Crime Victimization and Police Contact written by Kassy Moore and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, U.S. households experienced about 3,394,700 burglary victimizations. Persons age 12 or older who had disabilities experienced 1.3 million nonfatal violent crimes in 2012. Nonfatal violent crimes include rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. In 2012, an estimated 293,800 nonfatal violent and property hate crime victimizations occurred against persons age 12 or older residing in U.S. households. Seasonal patterns exist when similar fluctuations in the victimization rates tend to recur each year during the same season. Seasonal patterns are a long-standing topic in both popular and scholarly literatures on crime and show how environmental factors, such as temperature changes and daylight hours, might be associated with crime throughout the year. This book discusses crime, victimization and police contact in these crimes and victimization. Topics include household burglary, crimes against persons with disabilities, hate crimes, and seasonal patterns in criminal victimization trends. This book also examines requests for police assistance and police behavior during traffic and street stops.

Download or read book Understanding Crime Trends written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes over time in the levels and patterns of crime have significant consequences that affect not only the criminal justice system but also other critical policy sectors. Yet compared with such areas as health status, housing, and employment, the nation lacks timely information and comprehensive research on crime trends. Descriptive information and explanatory research on crime trends across the nation that are not only accurate, but also timely, are pressing needs in the nation's crime-control efforts. In April 2007, the National Research Council held a two-day workshop to address key substantive and methodological issues underlying the study of crime trends and to lay the groundwork for a proposed multiyear NRC panel study of these issues. Six papers were commissioned from leading researchers and discussed at the workshop by experts in sociology, criminology, law, economics, and statistics. The authors revised their papers based on the discussants' comments, and the papers were then reviewed again externally. The six final workshop papers are the basis of this volume, which represents some of the most serious thinking and research on crime trends currently available.

Book Understanding Victimology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shelly Clevenger
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2024-03-29
  • ISBN : 1003848133
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Understanding Victimology written by Shelly Clevenger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Victimology: An Active Learning Approach is the only textbook with extensive discussion of both online and offline victimization reinforced by group and individual learning activities. Our textbook offers instructors a variety of active learning exercises – in the book itself and in the authors’ ancillaries – that engage students in the material and shed light on the experiences of marginalized social groups. Through these activities, students become engaged with the material at a higher level of learning. They learn how victimization happens and the challenges people who experience crime face in acquiring assistance from the criminal-legal system at a more intimate level instead of simply reading about it. Students also build their abilities to work with others in a collaborative learning environment, encouraging professional socialization for the future. The chapters in this second edition address gaps in information typically presented in victimology that ignore prevention or intervention, even though these topics are currently at the forefront of the national conversation going on about sexual violence in higher education. New to this edition are added coverage of immigrants and minorities and new chapters on the media and victimization and on victimization across the gender spectrum, as well as an online instructor resource covering UK case studies, legal framework, and social context that broadens the book’s global appeal. Suitable for undergraduate courses in victimology, this book also serves the needs of sociology and women’s studies courses and can be taught university-wide as part of diversity and inclusion initiatives.
