Book excerpt: The sequel to the critically acclaimed Visions of Seaside (2013), Reflections on Seaside celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the town of Seaside, returning to the place that has inspired countless designers, architects, urban planners, and everyday citizens in the search for the ideal home. Reflections on Seaside is the most comprehensive book on the history and development of the nation's first and most influential New Urbanist town. The book chronicles the forty-year history of the evolution and development of the town of Seaside, Florida, which has had a significant global influence on town planning around the world. The book features, among other elements, new projects built in and around the town since the last publication in 2013, and outlines a blueprint for moving forward over the next twenty-five to fifty years. Many new essays by a wide array of prominent architects and designers, including Robert A. M. Stern, Andrés Duany, Deborah Berke, Steven Holl, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Ray Gindroz, and Scott Merrill, examine urbanism today as well as sustainability and the environment. Dhiru A. Riley Jr. is an American politician who served for ten terms as mayor of Charleston, South Carolina (1975-2016). Léon Krier is an architect, architectural theorist, urban planner, and prominent advocate of New Urbanism and New Traditional architecture. He is also adviser to Charles, Prince of Wales.

Book excerpt: Shore Lines can help you restore meaning and gain perspective. Mari Messer is a sea lover, who takes annual seaside retreats to collect shells, watch people and animals, and fill notebooks with images, musings, and reflections. The result of her sojourns is a book in the tradition of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea. Shore Lines presents the sea as a guide to life, helping readers become more focused and grounded as they view their lives through Messer's lyrical lens. With Shore Lines, Messer inspires readers to "explore your own inner sea-space. To some, taking time for reflection may seem like selfish indulgence... But perhaps now more than ever, we need such a respite, a chance to restore balance and clarity... We need to go apart when there's danger we may come apart. If you can't get to the sea, I urge you to sit beside a fountain in a park, or seek out a river, a lake, even a puddle for your reflection. Or simply come along on an imaginal sojourn beside the sea as you read these pages." Dip into Shore Lines to discover:* The power of the night stars appearing at twilight over the sea.* The meaning of a bouquet of gull feathers.* How to learn from sea cows and have "friendship for no advantage."* The retreating tide has a pallet that "accepts our old work and leaves a smooth new beach to entice us to begin again." Shore Lines is a vacation retreat by the sea that anyone can take any time of the year.

Book The Aesthetics of the Undersea

Download or read book The Aesthetics of the Undersea written by Margaret Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among global environments, the undersea is unique in the challenges it poses – and the opportunities it affords – for sensation, perception, inquiry, and fantasy. The Aesthetics of the Undersea draws case studies in such potencies from the subaqueous imaginings of Western culture, and from the undersea realities that have inspired them. The chapters explore aesthetic engagements with underwater worlds, and sustain a concern with submarine "sense," in several meanings of that word: when submerged, faculties and fantasies transform, confronting human subjects with their limitations while enlarging the apparent scope of possibility and invention. Terrestrially-established categories and contours shift, metamorphose, or fail altogether to apply. As ocean health acquires an increasing share of the global environmental imaginary, the histories of submarine sense manifest ever-greater importance, and offer resources for documentation as well as creativity. The chapters deal with the sensory, material, and formal provocations of the underwater environment, and consider the consequences of such provocations for aesthetic and epistemological paradigms. Contributors, who hail from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, include scholars of literature, art, new media, music and history. Cases studies range from baroque and rococo fantasies to the gothic, surrealism, modernism, and contemporary installation art. By juxtaposing early modern and Enlightenment contexts with matters of more recent – and indeed contemporary – importance, The Aesthetics of the Undersea establishes crucial relations among temporally remote entities, which will resonate across the environmental humanities.
