This book was released on 2010 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the results of a search for supersymmetry in proton-antiproton collisions with a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV studied with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our strategy is to select collisions with two photons in the final state that have the properties of being the decays of very massive supersymmetric particles. This includes looking for large total energy from the decayed particles as well as for the presence of particles that leave the detector without interacting. We find no events using 2.6 fb−1 of data collected during the 2004-2008 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron which is consistent with the background estimate of 1.4 ± 0.4 events. Since there is no evidence of new particles we set cross section limits in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry model with {tilde {chi}}1° → [gamma]{tilde G}, where the {tilde {chi}}1° and {tilde G} are the lightest neutralino and the gravitino (the lightest supersymmetric particle), respectively. We set limits on models as a function of the {tilde {chi}}1° mass and lifetime, producing the world's most sensitive search for {tilde {chi}}1° by excluding masses up to 149 GeV/c2 for {tilde {chi}}1° lifetimes much less than 1 ns.

Book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector

Download or read book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector written by Chiara Rizzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis documents two of the highest-profile searches for supersymmetry performed at the ATLAS experiment using up to 80/fb of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its Run 2 (2015-2018). The signals of interest feature a high multiplicity of jets originating from the hadronisation of b-quarks and large missing transverse momentum, which constitutes one of the most promising final state signatures for discovery of new phenomena at the LHC. The first search is focused on the strong production of a pair of gluinos, with each gluino decaying into a neutralino and a top-antitop-quark pair or a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. The second search targets the pair production of higgsinos, with each higgsino decaying into a gravitino and a Higgs boson, which in turn is required to decay into a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. Both searches employ state-of-the-art experimental techniques and analysis strategies at the LHC, resulting in some of the most restrictive bounds available to date on the masses of the gluino, neutralino, and higgsino in the context of the models explored.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with a Photon Lepton and Missing Transverse Energy

This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.

Book Supersymmetry Searches at the Tevatron

Download or read book Supersymmetry Searches at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review some of the latest results on Supersymmetry searches at the Fermilab tevatron Collider. The final states for supersymmetric processes are preferably described in terms of the physical signatures produced by the particles involved. Accordingly we look at: missing transverse energy, E{sub T}, related to the presence of neutral and stable supersymmetric particles; jets, from the decay of squarks or gluinos; leptons, coming for instance from gaugino decays; photons, predicted in gauge-mediated models. We discuss here some of the most recent results on SUSY searches performed at the Fermilab Tevatron by the CDF and D0 collaborations. The CDF and D0 detectors[1, 2] collected, during the 1992-96 period (Run I), about 100 pb−1 of p{bar p} collisions. The most relevant up-grades for the current run (Run II, started in March 2001) refer mainly to the tracking and trigger system, with minor improvements to the calorimetry and muon systems.

Book Search for Events with Leptonic Jets and Missing Transverse Energy in mathbf p bar p Collisions at mathbf sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Events with Leptonic Jets and Missing Transverse Energy in mathbf p bar p Collisions at mathbf sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the first search for pair production of isolated jets of charged leptons in association with a large imbalance in transverse energy in p{bar p} collisions using 5.8 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. No excess is observed above Standard Model background, and the result is used to set upper limits on the production cross section of pairs of supersymmetric chargino and neutralino particles as a function of 'dark-photon' mass, where the dark photon is produced in the decay of the lightest supersymmetric particle.

Book Search for Particles Decaying Into a Z Boson and a Photon in P Anti p Collisions at S 1 2

Download or read book Search for Particles Decaying Into a Z Boson and a Photon in P Anti p Collisions at S 1 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present the results of the first search for a new particle X produced in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV and subsequently decaying to Z[gamma]. The search uses 0.3 fb−1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. They set limits on the production cross section times the branching fraction [sigma](p{bar p} → X) x B(X → Z[gamma]) that range from 0.4-3.5 pb at the 95% C.L. for X with invariant masses between 100 and 1000 GeV/c2 over a wide range of X decay widths.

Book A Search for Charged Massive Stable Particles

Download or read book A Search for Charged Massive Stable Particles written by Thomas Nunnemann and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for charged massive (quasi- ) stable particles with the D0 detector at the Tevatron collider based on 390 pb{sup -1} of data is presented. The search is performed in the frameworks of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. The hypothetical particles are assumed to be pair-produced in p{bar p} collisions giving a signature of two reconstructed muon-like objects with high invariant mass and time-of-flights indicative of heavy particles. Since no excess over background is observed, cross-section limits for the pair-production of stable staus and charginos are set. Mass limits of 140 GeV for a higgsino-like chargino and 174 GeV for a gaugino-like chargino are set.

Book Search for R parity Violating Supersymmetry with the D0 Detector

Download or read book Search for R parity Violating Supersymmetry with the D0 Detector written by Christian Autermann and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searches for R-parity violating supersymmetry with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p}-collider are presented. In the case of non-zero LL{bar E} couplings {lambda}{sub ijk} {approx}> 0.01, multi-lepton final states, and for a small coupling {lambda}{sub 122} “0.01 di-muon final states are studied. The case of non-zero LQ{bar D} coupling {lambda}{prime}{sub 211} leads to final states with two muons and jets. A total integrated luminosity of 0.38 fb{sup -1} collected between April 2002 and August 2004 is utilized. The observed numbers of events are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation, and limits on R{sub p} supersymmetry are derived, extending significantly previous bounds.

Book Search for Supersymmetry with Photons in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry with Photons in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two searches for physics beyond the standard model in events containing photons are presented. Our data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV, collected with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The analyses pursue different inclusive search strategies. One analysis requires at least one photon, at least two jets, and a large amount of transverse momentum imbalance, while the other selects events with at least two photons and at least one jet, and uses the razor variables to search for signal events. The background expected from standard model processes is evaluated mainly from data. These results are interpreted in the context of general gauge-mediated supersymmetry, with the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle either a bino- or wino-like neutralino, and within simplified model scenarios. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are obtained for cross sections as functions of the masses of the intermediate supersymmetric particles.

Book Search for Heavy Long lived Particles that Decay to Photons in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Heavy Long lived Particles that Decay to Photons in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the results of the first search for heavy, neutral, longlived particles that decay to photons at a hadron collider. We use a sample of +jet+missing transverse energy events in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Candidate events are selected based on the arrival time of a high-energy photon at the electromagnetic calorimeter as measured with a timing system that was recently installed. The final result is that we find 2 events, using 570±34 pb-1 of data collected during 2004-2005 at the Fermilab Tevatron, consistent with the background estimate of 1.3±0.7 events. While our search strategy does not rely on model-specific dynamics, we interpret this result in terms of cross section limits in a supersymmetric model with $\vec{X}$$0\atop{1}$ eG and set a world-best e 01 mass reach of 101 GeV/c2 at e = 5 ns. We can exclude any [gamma]+jet+missing transverse energy signal that would produce more than 5.5 events.
