Book Revealing the Most Energetic Light from Pulsars and Their Nebulae

Download or read book Revealing the Most Energetic Light from Pulsars and Their Nebulae written by David Carreto Fidalgo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the extraordinary observation of TeV gamma rays from the Crab Pulsar, the most energetic light ever detected from this type of object. It presents detailed information on the painstaking analysis of the unprecedentedly large dataset from the MAGIC telescopes, and comprehensively discusses the implications of pulsed TeV gamma rays for state-of-the-art pulsar emission models. Using these results, the book subsequently explores new testing methodologies for Lorentz Invariance Violation, in terms of a wavelength-dependent speed of light. The book also covers an updated search for Very-High-Energy (VHE), >100 GeV, emissions from millisecond pulsars using the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite, as well as a study on the promising Pulsar Wind Nebula candidate PSR J0631. The observation of VHE gamma rays is essential to studying the non-thermal sources of radiation in our Universe. Rotating neutron stars, also known as pulsars, are an extreme source class known to emit VHE gamma rays. However, to date only two pulsars have been detected with emissions above 100 GeV, and our understanding of their emission mechanism is still lacking.

Book A Search for Fast Gamma Ray Pulsars with OSSE

Download or read book A Search for Fast Gamma Ray Pulsars with OSSE written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsar mode data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) onboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, with time resolution between 125 microsecond and 8 ms, have been analyzed for the presence of short period gamma-ray pulsations. Observations of known point sources (including SN 1987A, SN 1993J, GRO J0422+32, and several pulsars) and of regions where high densities of pulsars are expected (including the Galactic Center, the Galactic plane and arms, and the Large Magellanic Cloud) are included in the study. Both isolated pulsars and pulsars in close binary systems are searched for; in the latter case, the quadratic coherence recovery technique is used to correct for broadening of the pulsar signal from orbital motion. No new gamma-ray pulsars have been detected. Upper limits on the pulsed gamma-ray flux from isolated pulsars in the 50-210 keV energy range of OSSE are between 0:2 x 10(exp -3) and 2.0 x 10(exp -3) photons s(exp -1) for pulse periods between 250 microseconds and 0.5 s. Upper limits on the pulsed flux from binary pulsars are between 1.5 x 10(exp -3) and 6.4 x 10(exp -3) photons s(exp -1)/sq cm for the same energy band and pulse period range. We estimate that, in the Galaxy, there are fewer than ~125 isolate pulsars similar to PSR B1509-58 with radiation peaks in the OSSE band but undetected in the radio and X-ray bands.

Book Very high energy Gamma ray Observations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae and Cataclysmic Variable Stars with MAGIC and Development of Trigger Systems for IACTs

Download or read book Very high energy Gamma ray Observations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae and Cataclysmic Variable Stars with MAGIC and Development of Trigger Systems for IACTs written by Rubén López Coto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a comprehensive work that addresses many of the open questions currently being discusssed in the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray community. It presents a detailed description of the MAGIC telescope together with a glimpse of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). One section is devoted to the design, development and characterization of trigger systems for current and future imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The book also features a state-of-the-art description of pulsar wind nebula (PWN) systems, the study of the multi-TeV spectrum of the Crab nebula, as well as the discovery of VHE gamma rays at the multiwavelength PWN 3C 58, which were sought at these wavelengths for more than twenty years. It also includes the contextualization of this discovery amongst the current population of VHE gamma-ray PWNe. Cataclysmic variable stars represent a new source of gamma ray energies, and are also addressed here. In closing, the thesis reports on the systematic search for VHE gamma-ray emissions of AE Aquarii in a multiwavelength context and the search for VHE gamma-ray variability of novae during outbursts at different wavelengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 39 records literature published in 1985 and received before August 15, 1985. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organiza tions, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. On account of the introduction of an object index the scope of index information will be considerably enlarged beginning with this volume. In connection with the subject index an additional source to satisfy the needs of retrieval is opened up. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Ms. Karin Burkhardt, Ms. Susanne Schlotelburg, and Mr. Stefan Wagner supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Book High Energy Emission from Pulsars and their Systems

Download or read book High Energy Emission from Pulsars and their Systems written by Nanda Rea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the inaugural meeting of the Sant Cugat Forum on Astrophysics was to address, in a global context, the current understanding of and challenges in high-energy emissions from isolated and non-isolated neutron stars, and to confront the theoretical picture with observations of both the Fermi satellite and the currently operating ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. Participants have also discussed the prospects for possible observations with planned instruments across the multi-wavelength spectrum (e.g. SKA, LOFAR, E-VLT, IXO, CTA) and how they will impact our theoretical understanding of these systems. In keeping with the goals of the Forum, this book not only represents the proceedings of the meeting, but also a reflection on the state-of-the-art in the topic.

Book Search For New Sources Of Very High Energy Gamma Rays

Download or read book Search For New Sources Of Very High Energy Gamma Rays written by Kenya Aonye Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January of 2021, the HAWC observatory released their third catalogue of very-high-energy gamma ray sources. In this catalogue, 20 of the 65 sources were labeled unassociated. Meaning of all previously discovered sources, they have no high energy counterpart within 1°. From these 20 sources, it was seen that three sources 3HWC J0621+382, 3HWC J0631+107, and 3HWC J1739+099 were closely associated with pulsars PSR J0622+3749, PSR J0631+1036, and PSR J1740+100 respectively. These pulsars are listed in the ANTF pulsar catalog. It is important that these three sources be further studied, as the pulsar association can give clues regarding the origin of gamma ray acceleration. To expand the investigation of these sources, a morphological and spectral analysis was conducted to determine changes in each source's extension and level of emission. Comparisons between pulsar data and HAWC data were also conducted to verify that each experiment was seeing the same thing. Multiple software packages were utilized to visualize the data. The Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) in conjunction with the HAWC accelerated likelihood (HAL) plugin is used to fit source spectrums and determine morphology. After analyzing data from HAWC's datasets of 1,523 days and 2,770 days, it was concluded that each source exhibited significant growth in intensity over time. Future work will include a multi-wavelength analysis using data from other gamma-ray experiments.

Book Finding Or Not New Gamma Ray Pulsars with GLAST

Download or read book Finding Or Not New Gamma Ray Pulsars with GLAST written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young energetic pulsars will likely be the largest class of Galactic sources observed by GLAST, with many hundreds detected. Many will be unknown as radio pulsars, making pulsation detection dependent on radio and/or x-ray observations or on blind periodicity searches of the gamma-rays. Estimates for the number of pulsars GLAST will detect in blind searches have ranged from tens to many hundreds. I argue that the number will be near the low end of this range, partly due to observations being made in a scanning as opposed to a pointing mode. This paper briefly reviews how blind pulsar searches will be conducted using GLAST, what limits these searches, and how the computations and statistics scale with various parameters.

Book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation

Download or read book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation written by Felix A. Aharonian and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic Ýgamma¨-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. This book presents the motivations and highlights the principal objectives of the field, as well as demonstrates its intrinsic links to other branches of high energy astrophysics. Preference is given to three topical areas: (i) origin of cosmic rays: (ii) physics and astrophysics of relativistic jets: (iii) observational gamma ray cosmology. Also, a significant part of the book is devoted to the discussion of the principal mechanisms of production and absorption of energetic Ýgamma¨-rays in different astrophysical environments, as well as to the description of the detection methods of high energy cosmic Ýgamma¨- radiation.
