Book excerpt: Englische Version: Time-domain multi-messenger astronomy is the study of transient astrophysical phenomena using several messenger particles and waves. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a ground-based telescope array, which measures very-high-energy gamma rays between 30 GeV and 100 TeV. Within this work, three H.E.S.S. transients follow-up programs and their results are shown. At first, the nova program is shown together with the detection of the 2021 RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) outburst. RS Oph is a known nova with past eruptions. The analysis of the nova presented in this work shows a clear detection over the first five nights of observations, and a marginal detection two to four weeks after the eruption. RS Oph is thus the first Galactic transient phenomenon detected at ~1 TeV energies. A clear variability of the spectrum is shown. A discussion of the underlying physics concludes, that the observed gamma-ray emission most likely stems from cooled protons accelerated within an astrophysical shock. The results show time-resolved particle acceleration. The second program is the gravitational-waves (GWs) program. Here, the analysis of four observed binary black hole merger events is shown. No detection is reported, and upper limit sky maps are derived instead. The viability of GW follow-up with H.E.S.S. is discussed, and a case is made for a potential counterpart detection. The third program is the tidal disruption event (TDE) program, a pioneered program established at the emergence of the source class within the last few years. Unique challenges of the follow-up program are discussed, and the H.E.S.S. follow-up of the event AT2019uqv is shown. No detection is reported, and upper limits for AT2019uqv are given instead. Book excerpt: In this thesis I explore some of the brightest transient phenomena we observe in the highnenergy sky. I consider some of the observational difficulties we encounter in studying these highly variable sources, in particular the importance of the level of photon statistics, especially in the difficult region that sits between 10 and 100 GeV, where we have the overlap between the energy domain of space telescopes and the energy range more suited to ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The specific sources I study here belong to various classes of gamma-ray emitters: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), compact binaries, and powerful flare events in the Sun's magnetosphere. The first chapter provides an introduction to the field of high energy gamma-ray astronomy. There, I cover the basic gamma-ray emission mechanisms and give an overview of the sources that I have investigated as well as a description of the telescopes and instruments involved in my gamma-ray observations of these sources. The second and third chapters discuss the work I have done together with colleagues in the H.E.S.S. Collaboration to enable the delivery of the first results from phase II of H.E.S.S. for two bright AGNs and the gamma-ray binary PSR B1259-63. The fourth chapter covers my work on analysing the gamma-ray emission from solar flares in order to put constraints on hadronic models of the are emission. The fifth chapter discusses the evidence for multiple components in the high energy spectrum of the blazar AGN called Mrk 501. The sixth chapter highlights the importance of the study of the cut-off region in bright gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi- LAT, investigating also the possible improvements that will be brought about by the next generation of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. Finally, the conclusions summarise my findings and explore future perspectives in the field.

Book excerpt: The universe contains many extremely energetic astrophysical sources that emit particles on timescales from fractions of a second to thousands of years. Studying these sources through gamma-ray and multi-messenger astronomy may help to reveal the answers to several remaining fundamental questions in physics. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory, an extensive air shower array, is well-suited to perform transient searches due to its large field of view and high duty cycle. In this work, a catalog search of all very-high-energy gamma-ray sources in HAWC's field of view is conducted, revealing a total of 65 sources. Then a search for evaporating primordial black holes is performed. None are detected, so upper limits are set on their burst rate density. Finally, the IceCube neutrino observatory is introduced in order to perform a multi-messenger search for flaring gamma rays and neutrinos originating from the same point in the sky. None are detected, so upper limits are placed on the rate density and total energy of sources that produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. Performing these searches contributes to the understanding of the origins of cosmic rays and how astrophysical sources accelerate their particles to the high energies that are observed on Earth.

Book excerpt: As neutrally-charged astrophysical messengers, gamma rays serve as powerful tools for determining the origins of incredibly high-energy particles from across our universe [1]. Gamma rays are considered to have the highest energy of all electromagnetic radiation, with energies spanning from 0.5 MeV to about 100 TeV [2]. Although lower-energy gamma rays can originate from within our solar system, gamma rays in the GeV and TeV ranges tend to originate from sources beyond our solar system [1]. By investigating these sources, we can understand more about the astrophysical phenomena that characterize the most extreme conditions in our universe, such as supernova remnants, gamma-ray bursts, and pulsars [3]. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov Gamma-Ray Observatory (HAWC) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detectors in the very high energy (VHE) regime, with the capability to observe gamma rays from 100 GeV and 100 TeV [4]. In 2017, HAWC conducted a blind search encompassing two thirds of the sky and 508 days of observations [4]. In this search, there were 16 VHE gamma-ray excesses that were unassociated with any previously discovered gamma-ray sources [4]. Now with data from 1523 days of observations, we begin to study these 16 unassociated candidate TeV sources in more detail. In this work, we update the locations of maximum significance for these candidate TeV sources and analyze the temporal progression of their significance and flux. This allows us to determine if they have faded into the diffuse gamma radiation or if they can still be considered unassociated candidate TeV sources. We then reevaluate the morphologies and spectral energy distributions of the remaining sources and discuss any recent observations from other gamma-ray observatories. We find that 10 of these 16 unassociated candidate TeV sources can still be considered candidate sources. In the future, we plan to use data from other observatories to continue to put better constrains on the morphology and spectral energy distributions for these sources and better understand their acceleration mechanisms. In addition, we plan to conduct a similar investigation with new HAWC excesses discovered with recent data from 1523 days of observations [5]. By investigating these excesses in the high-energy gamma-ray sky, we can discover and characterize new extreme astrophysical phenomena and ultimately uncover valuable information about the physical mechanisms that accelerate particles to very high energies.

Even though, compared to other scientific fields, it is a young discipline which has developed only in this century, it has answered many questions concerning the under standing of our cosmos. One of these great achievements was the concept of nucleosynthesis, the creation of the elements in the early universe in interstellar matter and in stars. Nuclear astrophysics has continued, to solve many riddles of the evolution of the myriads of stars in our cosmos. This review volume attempts to provide an overview of the current status of nuclear astrophysics. Special emphasis is given to the interdisciplinary nature of the field: astronomy, nuclear physics, astrophysics and particle physics are equally involved. One basic effort of nuclear astrophysics is the collection of ob servational facts with astronomical methods. Laboratory studies of the nuclear processes involved in various astrophysical scenarios have provided fundamen tal information serving both as input for and test of astrophysical models. The theoretical understanding of nuclear reaction mechanisms is necessary, for example, to extrapolate the experimentally determined reaction rates to the thermonuclear energy range, which is relevant for the nuclear processes in our cosmos. Astrophysical models and calculations allow us to simulate how nuclear processes contribute to driving the evolution of stars, interstellar matter and the whole universe. Finally, elementary particle physics also plays an important role in the field of nuclear astrophysics, for instance through weak interaction processes involving neutrinos.

The upper limit is reported on both events and is compared to a simple and a self-consistent model for parameter estimation. In addition, a population of sources were analyzed to estimate the future detection potential of new SLSNe with several gamma-ray observatories. Finally, the observation and analysis of several novae were performed. These sources were observed with VERITAS and Fermi-LAT. The observation of Nova Herculis 2021 is noteworthy in that the overlap of both observations may constrain the cutoff energy of the nova spectral model, providing a estimate for the maximum energy of the accelerated particles in the nova's shock region.
