Book Search for New Physics in Final States with Two Opposite sign Same flavor Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for New Physics in Final States with Two Opposite sign Same flavor Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. Both search modes use several event categories in order to increase the sensitivity to new physics. These categories are based on the rapidity of the leptons, the multiplicity of jets and b jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and missing transverse momentum. In addition, phase space regions are included for which excesses were reported using the sqrt(s)=8 TeV data. A local significance of 2.6 sigma for a kinematic edge search was observed by the CMS Collaboration, and of 3.0 sigma for events compatible with the Z boson mass by the ATLAS Collaboration. The observations in all signal regions are consistent with the expectations from the standard model, and the results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry.

Download or read book Search for Physics Beyond the Standard Model in Events with Two Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The analysis focuses on searches for a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the oppositesign same-flavor lepton pair and for final states with an on-shell Z boson. Furthermore, the observations are consistent with expectations from standard model processes and are interpreted in terms of upper limits on the production of supersymmetric particles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present results of a search at CDF in 929 ± 56 pb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at 1.96 TeV for the anomalous production of events containing a high-transverse momentum charged lepton (l, either e or?) and photon , accompanied by missing transverse energy (E{sub T}), and/or additional leptons and photons, and jets (X). They use the same selection criteria as in a previous CDF Run I search, but with an order-magnitude larger data set, a higher p{bar p} collisions energy, and the CDF II detector. They find 163 l?E{sub T} + X events, compared to an expectation of 150.6 ± 13.0 events. They observe 74 ll? + X events, compared to an expectation of 65.1 ± 7.7 events. They find no events similar to the Run II ee??E{sub T} event.

Book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon

Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.

Book An Introductory Course of Particle Physics

Download or read book An Introductory Course of Particle Physics written by Palash B. Pal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For graduate students unfamiliar with particle physics, An Introductory Course of Particle Physics teaches the basic techniques and fundamental theories related to the subject. It gives students the competence to work out various properties of fundamental particles, such as scattering cross-section and lifetime. The book also gives a lucid summary of the main ideas involved. In giving students a taste of fundamental interactions among elementary particles, the author does not assume any prior knowledge of quantum field theory. He presents a brief introduction that supplies students with the necessary tools without seriously getting into the nitty-gritty of quantum field theory, and then explores advanced topics in detail. The book then discusses group theory, and in this case the author assumes that students are familiar with the basic definitions and properties of a group, and even SU(2) and its representations. With this foundation established, he goes on to discuss representations of continuous groups bigger than SU(2) in detail. The material is presented at a level that M.Sc. and Ph.D. students can understand, with exercises throughout the text at points at which performing the exercises would be most beneficial. Anyone teaching a one-semester course will probably have to choose from the topics covered, because this text also contains advanced material that might not be covered within a semester due to lack of time. Thus it provides the teaching tool with the flexibility to customize the course to suit your needs.

Book Searches in Dilepton Final States at CDF

Download or read book Searches in Dilepton Final States at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Event signatures with two oppositely or same-sign charged leptons are predicted in many new physics scenarios. Such events could arise from chargino-neutralino production, in decays of pair produced supersymmetric top quarks, additional massive vector bosons or exotic heavy quarks. We present the most recent results from the CDF experiment on searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in events with two leptons in the final state produced in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV at Fermilab Tevatron.

Download or read book Particle Detectors written by Hermann Kolanoski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.
