Book excerpt: Pacey: I haven't breathed properly in four years. The bullet that ripped my girlfriend away from me in Iraq, ripped a May shaped hole in my heart that I don't want to fill. The only time my lungs fully remember how to do something as simple as breathing air is when I'm with a woman who can never be mine. In a relationship? I'll take it. Engaged? Yes please. Married? Hell yeah. Then I met her. The blonde with the boyfriend who's involved with everything I hate. I don't know if she knows what he's into, all I know is that my pants aren't the only thing that tighten when I'm around her. And now history is trying to repeat itself and I'm letting it happen over my dead body. Juliana: My life is comfortable. My boyfriend is seriously good-looking and my best friend is fun, supportive and always up for having a good time. I'm content, until I'm not. My perfectly constructed life comes crashing down around me and it's a mysterious, super hunky ex- SEAL who's suddenly at the right place at the right time. Every time. But when choices I didn't make impact my life in ways I never thought possible, I'm alone. Screwed. Terrified. When everything is on the line and your life is on the wrong side of the plumbing system, what do you do? I don't know... I don't know because this wasn't my mess to clean up. I like to think I'm an optimist, but how is it possible that anything good can come of this?

Book Mechanical Seals

Download or read book Mechanical Seals written by E. Mayer and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical Seals, Third Edition is a source of practical information on the design and use of mechanical seals. Topics range from design fundamentals and test rigs to leakage, wear, friction and power, reliability, and special designs. This text is comprised of nine chapters; the first of which gives a general overview of seals, including various types of seals and their applications. Attention then turns to the fundamentals of seal design, with emphasis on six requirements that must be considered: sealing effectiveness, length of life, reliability, power consumption, space requirements, and cost effectiveness. The next chapter is devoted to test rigs used to establish the effect of the various seal parameters on the behavior of face seals. Special test rigs used to establish leakage, wear, friction losses, and temperature distributions for various material combinations, rubbing speeds, pressures, fluid media, and temperatures are highlighted. The following chapters explain primary leakage through the seal gap between the faces of the seals; factors that contribute to seal wear; friction and power of a mechanical seal; relationship of leakage to wear and friction of a balanced face seal; and importance of seal reliability and operating safety. The final chapter explores particularly interesting sealing problems together with the use of special accessories such as heat exchangers; magnetic and cyclone separators; and techniques such as cooling and auxiliary circulation. This book will be useful to mechanical engineers as well as seal designers and seal users.

Book In the Service of the King

Download or read book In the Service of the King written by Nili S Fox and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 2000-12-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titles have always been conferred on persons both to identify their functions in society and to assign honorary status. In Egypt even more than in Mesopotamia, function-related and honorary titles were so valued that officials and functionaries of varying stations collected the titles accrued in their lifetime and preserved them in a titulary, the ancient equivalent of a resume. Israelites serving at the royal courts in Jerusalem and Samaria or in local administrations also held title, but the sources suggest far fewer of them than their neighbors. Nili Fox analyzes the titles and roles of civil officials and functionaries in Israel and Judah during the monarchy, including key ministers of the central government, regional administrators, and palace attendants. The nineteen titles fall into three categories: status-related titles, function-related titles, and miscellaneous designations that could be held by a variety of officials. Fox sets these Israelite and Judahite titles in their ancient context through extensive study of Egyptian, Akkadian, and Ugaritic records. She also draws upon the corpus of Hebrew epigraphic material, which allows her to explore economic components of state organization such as royal land grants, supply networks, and systems of accounting, which would be impossible to understand on the basis of the Hebrew Bible alone. Fox also treats the widely debated issue of whether Israelite state organization was influenced by foreign models and, if so, how much. The evidence of non-Hebrew sources offers little concrete material to substantiate theories that Israel modeled its government after a foreign prototype, and Fox offers a more finessed approach. Many features of Israelite administration are best explained as basic elements of any monarchic structure in the ancient Near East that developed to satisfy the needs of an evolving local system. Other seemingly foreign features have a long tradition in Canaan and probably were naturally assimilated. Fox recognizes the interconnections between the cultures in the region but emphasizes the need to closely examine the Israelite system with internal evidence.
