Book The Laws of Simplicity

Download or read book The Laws of Simplicity written by John Maeda and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design--guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda--a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer--explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products--how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."

Book The Circle of Simplicity

Download or read book The Circle of Simplicity written by Cecile Andrews and published by Harper. This book was released on 1997-02-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplicity is in; according to the Trends Research Institute, 15% of America's 77 million baby boomers will have joined the movement by the end of the decade. Inwardly rich and outwardly simple, voluntary simplicity is both a reaction and an antidote to the spiritually void, harried and materialistic lifestyle that pervades our culture. In Seattle, the mecca of the movement, Cecile Andrews is renowned for her workshops on voluntary simplicity and her seminars on creating simplicity circles (groups dedicated to pursuing simplicity in their own lives). In The Circle of Simplicity she explains how, instead of working to exhaustion, we should focus on our creativity, participate in community life, and be more concerned about the planet. In the end, simplicity means different things to different people. For some it means changing careers; for others it's deciding to walk to work. Regardless of how we adopt the principles of simplicity, Andrews asserts, we will be able to live a more satisfying, rewarding existence.

Book The Culture of Simplicity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Culture of Simplicity Classic Reprint written by Malcolm James Mcleod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Simplicity These pages have been written in the interims of a busy life; the burden of their intent being to emphasize a saying of James Russell Lowell's that the highest outcome of culture is simplicity. Much has been written of late concerning simplicity and simple living. It is the controlling note all but drowned, yet clamouring for a bear ing, in a materialistic age. And we believe it to be a spiritual note too. Such at least we have regarded it in these chapters. The message of the Eternal is ever the same, but the language in which it is expressed varies with the type and temperament of the peo ple to whom it comes; and to an age steeped in mammonism and worship of the flesh, the evangel calling for a voice and a deliverance is that simplicity is culture; simplicity is spirituality; simplicity is power; the spir itual is the solution of everything. Back to culture then, the culture of the cross, the culture that is towards the Christ. This is the gospel for an age of unrest. Book The Gift of Simplicity

Download or read book The Gift of Simplicity written by Victor-Antoine D'Avila-Latourrette and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the example and words from the Master, Br. Victor-Antoine encourages readers to strive for the attitude of simplistic living expressed in the Gospels. Using lessons from Scripture, he reminds us of what can be gained by living a life less cluttered by modern distractions and petty grievances to find freedom in Christian simplicity--a simplicity that is deeply rooted in Christ. It is not often these days that we hear anyone speak about simplicity. In today's fast-paced world, this seems an almost far-fetched notion. Yet we find the concept very alive in the Scriptures, particularly in the Gospels, where it is often connected with other virtues strongly taught and recommended by Jesus, such as humility, poverty of spirit, single-mindedness, meekness, and even the gift of wisdom. The Gift of Simplicity helps move our minds beyond the realm of human thought and human reasoning; it is then when wisdom instigates in us a new way of thinking.

Book Voluntary Simplicity

Download or read book Voluntary Simplicity written by Daniel Doherty and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2003-11-22 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simpler life. In a shadow cast by the jarring beginning of the new millennium, simplicity has an undeniable appeal. Global conflicts, domestic security concerns, and a stalling economy can make keeping up with the Joneses feel like, at best, a misguided luxury. Now is not a time for excess; it is a time, it would seem, to focus on 'what really matters.' Thus the appeal of voluntary simplicity, a notion that combines the freedom of modernity with certain comforts and virtues of the past. The authors in this volume speak to the what, why, and how of voluntary simplicity (and even to some extent the where, when, and who). Those included range from contemporary academics to thinkers from the turn of the last century, from ardent supporters to staunch critics. They approach the subject from a variety of perspectives-economic, psychological, sociological, historical, and theological. Each either implicitly or explicitly helps us explore the desirability and feasibility of voluntary simplicity.
